As for the indie scene they used to rely on stickers and various other cheap merch to make money on the side. The problem with everyone doing plush merch is oversaturation.

I think the margins are really good on plushies so it helps fund their productions. Artists get paid to make stuff fans want to watch and fans get both a show and some merch. Seems like it works out for everyone. I wish action figures were easier to produce. I’m not into most merch, but if there were actual articulated action figures, I could see getting into that.

i went through a period in my early to mid twenties (34 now) where i bought figures and plushies but then i realized around 27 i don't do any fucking thing with them and they just gather dust. i'll buy the rare amiibo now and then if they do useful or cool shit and i like the figure, but by large i don't buy figures or plushies anymore and haven't for years since i know it's not something i'll care about or use instantly after it arrives, and i'm too lazy to resell shit. it helps when all your favorite series don't get shit in terms of merch as well i guess but unless something has sentimental value i don't understand the point of blind consoooooooming anymore nowadays personally. a lot of it is just physical clutter that becomes a pain to deal with unless you put in the effort to resell.

One of these companies will approach a creator with a deal, and part of that deal will be the fact that it's only a limited time thing, it allows these plush companies to do take on very little risk when it's a smaller IP that doesn't have a massive, Circus/Hotel size following that's sure to sell.
