Thoughts on Indie Cartoonists/Webcomic Artists using Makeship to create cheap plushies? Just a way to make a quick buck using the "get it or it's gone forever" deal? Do most of these projects even need merch?
>>
>>154261538
It's always a plushie. Always.
>>
>>154261538
I can understand that some people want to get merch of characters they like, on the other hand though, I've never understood why people get plushies. To me it's juvenile, it's one thing to keep your childhood teddy for those lonely nights, it's another to buy some cutesy version of a pinup/fapbait character. I already think little of character merch anyway but plushies are just about on par with acrylic standees (because if you just put a picture of your fave character in a frame on your desk you'd look like an even more pathetic weirdo).

The same as movie theaters with ancillary shit to the primary service of showing the film like collector popcorn buckets to make additional cash.
I don't care.

I thought acrylic stands are for poorfags who can't afford figurines
>>
>>154261547
What else should it be?
>>
>>154261538
Gotta get that bag.
I wonder what the actually takeaway for the Creator is on these.
>>
>>154261547
It's easier to get a small group of people in a mill to make a small quantity of plushies than an entire plastic molding factory.
>>
>>154261672
That makes sense, but I'd rather just get something like a sticker or a magnet. Heck you could just cut out a piece of card and make a standee yourself. It's just all a bit cringe to me.
>>
Wished it happened more often. I like physically owning merch
>>
>>154261680

>>
>>154261538
Probably not but a lot of franchises rely on merch. That was the big reason there were so many Saturday morning cartoons back in the day and the toyetic shows of the 80s and 90s. As for the indie scene they used to rely on stickers and various other cheap merch to make money on the side. The problem with everyone doing plush merch is oversaturation.
>>
Not the topic but Kate subtly becoming more fatter is the only good direction Bruno made with current IWTEYG
>>
>>154261829
She should be fatter
>>
>>154261680
I really prefer small figurines I can actually display over plushies that will end up fighting for space if I get more than like three.
>>
>>154261741
I'm surprised there's not a NSFW version of Makeship doing this.
>but you could turn any plushie into an onahole yourself
I don't want to. There's a reason I don't shop at IKEA.
>>
>>154261672
Close, it started because most Japanese people can't afford living spaces that allow enough space for large figure collections.
>>
>>154261538
I hate plushie/figurine merch. Something about it feels so wasteful, like I can see this thing rotting in a landfill or thrift shop. At least mugs/clothes,/ stationery/etc provide use.
>>
>>154261901
Likewise, I refer to it as 'plastic crap'.
>>
>>154261829
>subtly
Maybe it's a boiling frog thing but I haven't seen the character since they were thin so it's a pretty alarming change for me.
>>
>>154261901
If it's for a FOTM pilot its 100% going to get tossed out as soon as the owner loses interest in the series, or needs to make room for things they're more interested in.
>>
>>154261901

There's some novelty in it and god knows indie artists need every penny they can get in this bleak hellscape. But I am certainly not motivated to buy a plushie of a character that barely exists beyond a handful of illustrations and concept sketches as I've seen with some cases.

Personally I hate it and see it as some cheap alternative to funkopops. I see some YouTube channels doing more content to announce their plushies than actually making their shows. The big tear for me was the Gameoverse thing having blushing ads right at the end of the pilot. They were ready on that shit.

I think the whole limited time thing they advertise means that they only commissioned like a small number of them and they do not have the money to comission more. It would be better to say they have 100 of these things in a box in their garage and they ran out of money.

I also hate them because you know they are just going to go on a shelf to make up a nerd wall. Congrats on your mosaic of old crap and dust collectors.

I dunno. I'd much rather just donate $10 to an indie project and await content than buy a $40 toy that will become clutter in a year.

Makeship plushies are made by people in china (Makeship are vague about where the plushies are manufactured, and have a statemtent about doing good on their site, but you know it's Chinese because the plushies ships out from there).

Who knows if the working conditions are truly good or not

I’m not into plushies or standees either, but I won’t get mad at indies for selling them. Apparently there’s demand and some people have pretty big collections. I think the margins are really good on plushies so it helps fund their productions. Artists get paid to make stuff fans want to watch and fans get both a show and some merch. Seems like it works out for everyone.

I wish action figures were easier to produce. I’m not into most merch, but if there were actual articulated action figures, I could see getting into that.
>>
>>154265325
> I see some YouTube channels doing more content to announce their plushies than actually making their shows.
What’s that “indie show” about two foxes that had a press blurb from cartoon base about how they’d love to work with glitch? (Like, no shit, join the fucking club). But they’ve *only* produced commercials for their plushies. No shorts or pilot or anything. Just ads.
>>
>>154267030
> I just can't imagine someone having every damn plushie from every damn modern cartoon/anime/comic/game, since they all push for it.
Some people make consumption their entire personality. There are people who collect roomfuls of marvel shit. Or thousands of funkopops. Indie plushies are a much smaller niche in comparison. There are people who try to collect every one and their collections are much smaller than people who are into horror or something.

I can understand that some anons come on here just to shitpost about things they hate, on the other hand though, I've never understood why anons bitch about other people having fun. To me it's juvenile, it's one thing to derail a thread because you want to goon, it's another to complain about people collecting something just because they think it's neat. I already think little of contrarian trolls anyway but telling people to stop liking what you don't like is just about on par with complaining about America (because if you just make a thread obsessing over a country everybody already knows is a joke, you look like an even more pathetic weirdo.)

>>
>>154269476
Give it some time. Like I said, nowadays a bunch of series, games, cartoons, animes, and even youtubers have their own set of plushies, and the tendency seems for it to become even more common.

That’s if it’s a worldwide phenomenon, we’re seeing >literally whomst tier artists make a plushie of their mascot fetish characters who don’t even have a series.
Also, given the rise of 3D printing, surely it will become easier/more common to get people to sculpt and produce figures of characters.

People seem to like merch, that's no real skin off my balls. I think cheap factories have now made it so plushies are a pretty economical thing for small indie deals.

Judging from this thread, weight gain. I was referring to characters like this in general; OC’s who are your standard ‘thicc’ women that basically serve to have the artist put them on whatever art meme is popular on Twitter. Outside of that though they serve no narrative or genuinely ‘artistic’ function at all, at best featuring in a webcomic.
>>
>>154266988
>>154270176
they both are. The girl started out as fanart of some anime twink boy character, then a "my oc, do not steal" version of them, then they were made into a girl, and they've been evolving since. Go to the instagram page and scroll to the bottom and you can see the slow progression to what we have today. So the character is technically a biological female, but she started out as as anime bishounen fanart.

her boyfriend is a trans man, now as well, but that's in-universe. He might also now be gay.

>>154271825
it didn't start out that way. She was a normal teen highschooler daria ripoff, then in the 'canon' she got pregnant, then that seemed to be retconned, and she became a flabby cougar, and then now she's just fat to be an excuse to draw huge tits.

watching this shit evolve has been a weird thing I've tangentially been witness to.

The era where she was a highschooler with a cool scene boyfriend, the versions that got optioned for an animation pilot, were the coolest and most cohesive but oh well
>>
>>154266988
>had a deal with an actual animation team and fucked it up because she was too busy jerking off

Okay so I didn't know the full context behind her, I've just seen a bunch of other artists do this with their characters who have only been used for pinups. Also that evolution isn't uncommon, I guess like crabs every artist's OC evolves to become Stefania Ferraro, Which I'm fine with, as long as they don't go into full planetoid.

>So I uh, was given this clown doll by my dad after he cleared his uncle's house when he died. I don't really know who it is but my son tells me it's from some automated image show on the 'internet'. I call him Bozo.
>Well, actually 'he' is a 'she' you misgendering shitlord, but your social credit score won't be deducted as the doll isn't wearing the mandated pronoun badge. Anyway, this little girl is called 'Pommi', and your son is right, she was the star of a very popular 'indie' series called 'The Amazing Digital Circus', which featured on a predecessor to the cybernet called 'The internet', which was basically a series of tubes that allowed people to communicate with each other before the 1st AI War. Like a lot of series it's creator merchandised it for all it was worth before being unalived in a shootout with fans and police in Florida.
>*Owner hums and nods with interest*
>Now, when it comes to value, obviously when dealing with merchandise for short-lived internet phenomena the market is mostly comprised of nostalgic Gen Alphas on NEETbucks, so a decent amount of money there. Personally I'd say it's worth about 0.034 Neetcoin, of course the fading and the stains do detract from this.
>I really don't want to know what those stains are.
>*chuckles* none of us do.

i went through a period in my early to mid twenties (34 now) where i bought figures and plushies but then i realized around 27 i don't do any fucking thing with them and they just gather dust. i'll buy the rare amiibo now and then if they do useful or cool shit and i like the figure, but by large i don't buy figures or plushies anymore and haven't for years since i know it's not something i'll care about or use instantly after it arrives, and i'm too lazy to resell shit. it helps when all your favorite series don't get shit in terms of merch as well i guess but unless something has sentimental value i don't understand the point of blind consoooooooming anymore nowadays personally. a lot of it is just physical clutter that becomes a pain to deal with unless you put in the effort to resell.

As someone who's worked with an indie production using a third party plush thing like that, it's usually not the artist's decision. One of these companies will approach a creator with a deal, and part of that deal will be the fact that it's only a limited time thing, it allows these plush companies to do take on very little risk when it's a smaller IP that doesn't have a massive, Circus/Hotel size following that's sure to sell.
