Was Filmation getting trolled by a toy company?
>>
>>154276324
Should have named him Handy Dandy.
>>
>>154276324

Retard
>>
>>154276995
Errrrrm what the sigma? What the ligma? What the chudigma?
>>
Okay but Fisto could have just been a guy who punches people.
Filmation chose the make him into an ex-con who was getting uncomfortably close with a kid.
>>
>>154276324
Jokes aside, I think his design is forgettable and kinda ugly.

It’s not his fault he can’t compete with the sheer awesomeness that is Clamp Champ.

Mattel would bring in sketches of characters and vehicles they'd like advertised in the cartoon. One day, they showed up with a portfolio that included the "Ball Buster". Filmation president Lou Scheimer reportedly reacted by just standing up and silently leaving the room. The toy designers went back to the drawing board and redesigned it as the dinosaur-themed "Bashasaurus".
>>
>>154277298
>redesigned it as the dinosaur-themed "Bashasaurus"
Lame. Why didn't they call them "Spank Tanks"?

Of course.
>>
>>154277630
The perspective is just a bit funky
>>
>>154276324
asnd then what happened after everyone told their dark jokes?
nothing.
No one got fired, no e-mails got sent, no hr complaints. Just back to work.
Today, mattel sends over "fisto" and everyone has to clench their assholes and pretend to be stupid to avoid getting in trouble.
>>
>>154277069
next time you need carried somewhere, i hope the strong guy is like 'eew gross, that's uncomfortably close'
or 'i dont wanna get sued'

This is perfect Twisted Metal contestant material.

From what I heard, a lot of the names were place holders that weren't meant to be finalized, but then things got rushed.
>>
>>154277168
Clamp Champ sucks
You can literally take his gimmick away from him and let someone else use it
And it's not even a good weapon to begin with

It looks like they skinned Spikor and wrapped it around that ball.
>>

Fuck that, I want a Wacky Racers version of He-Man.
>>
>>154276324
Masters of the Universe was just an excuse for toy designers at Mattel to smash all their ideas for boys' toys into one product line.
Rip-off Conan the Barbarian? He's the main character. Rip-off Duncan Idaho? The hero's right hand man. You have two designs for evil skull castles? Fuck it, use both and make one of them the good guys' base of operations.
You want to sell a stupid motorized toy that slowly walks across the floor? Stick a dragon head on it and put it in the show exactly as-is. It's the most cynical and ridiculous nonsense they could come up with, presented with little to no alteration for taste or reasonability, and that's what made it popular. It's just a million darts thrown at the wall to sell plastic shit
>>
>>154286031
Even now, if you get a bunch of writers in a room, dump a bunch of toys on the table and tell them to write a show to sell this shit, you'll probably get something good with all of the improvisation going on. And, of course, any faggot trying to be ironic and critique the capitalistic situation he's in instead of doing his best to sell the toys gets fired on the spot.
>>
>>154286031
there's some fun engineering in the old toys. I know you will repeat fossilized complaints like a good normie but this has to be stated, especially considering the competition at the time
>>
>>154287719
This. Hasbro fought back by using the exact same strategies as their competition.

Transformers was ALSO just a hodge-podge of different toylines/concepts jammed into a single IP; they just took all of them from Japan instead of failed/weak ideas of their own.

GI Joe was explicitly meant to outdo Kenner's Star Wars line and Micronauts.

This thing better have amazing suspension.

Yeah fisting is not sexual!

Funny story about that...

They just made him becuase they felt like they should add a black guy after that mom made a whole ethnically diverse He-man ripoff for her kid because He-man was mostly white. And it was amazing let me see if I can find the comic
>>
>>154286031
>Rip-off Conan the Barbarian?
Allegedly He-Man WAS going to be a Conan toy line but someone got cold feet because the movie was violent and had tits and stuff so they had to rebrand the figure
>>
He fucked the Sorceress in 200x right? There was a whole mystery on if it was actually Duncan or Fisto and I don't know what's real. I was rooting for this guy so he can get away from the gay jokes but apparently a creator said it wasnt true just a red herring...

Wait, I've seen recent-ish action figures of these two. If you said some mom made this for her kid, does that mean Mattel bought the rights from her or something?
>>
>>154288810
A Mom made them for her kid but she legitimately made it into a toyline somehow back in the 80s. And in the 2020s when Mattel revived retro style He-man toys they brought them back after meeting with the mom also he can look at you naked through his boots be careful.

https://youtu.be/glyDrOs97Tc

Its the biggest example of 'if you dont like it make your own character' thing Ive ever seen. There's a latino version of this bit it was made using legal loopholes and I dont understand ir.
>>
>>154287719
I wasn't complaining. It was brilliant work, and more creative than anything else they could have done.
Little kids were already taking the toys they owned and coming up with insane frameworks to tie it all together. Mattel just directly addressed that tendency with products designed for and around that kind of Ad-libbing.
They gave kids a toy line with just enough connective tissue where you could have barbarians, witches, monsters, and magic castles in the same setting as spaceships, cybernetics, aliens, mechs, and laser guns, all with ready-made justifications.
It was absolutely designed for passionate wonder-struck kids to improvise and ad-lib for themselves. One could decide his Army Men came through a portal from World War II, or that they were aliens from a primitive planet going through a similar conflict. Transformers or Ninja Turtles toys could show up without yuh-huh-nuh-uh arguments breaking out over whether or not it's possible. Kids could build terrain and buildings out of Lego and come up with an easy diegetic reason that it's all colorful and squared off.

Masters of the Universe was engineered from the ground up to supercharge the kind of creative play kids were already doing, because it was the product of creative adults doing exactly the same thing in the design process. That's what's awesome about it, and that's what the lame, cheap reputation of the Filmation cartoon prevented the brand from doing for any kids besides the first generation who grew up on it without any preconceived notions.
(I'm sure you know that by the 90's and 2000's most 5-10 year olds thought He-Man was Gay and Weird, if they knew about the brand at all. I certainly did at that age.)

>Transformers or Ninja Turtles toys could show up without yuh-huh-nuh-uh arguments breaking out over whether or not it's possible.

Its crazy how Transformers actually made the Pretenders so kids could fit them into He-man. (At least that's how I think it went? They were Heman sized space dudes and monster dudes who trandforming toys would go inside and the same size as Motu.) And in modern day we have TMNT and Transformer official crossovers. Back in the day even DC wanted to get in on He-man. Its weird how it seems to have gotten memed so hard people dont know how big it was.
>>
>>154288948
This is far weirder than I could've expected when I first saw those action figures on the shelf. I had assumed at the time they were early concept art characters for MOTU or something like that. Thanks for the info!

Clamp Champ looks like a wrestler, so he is better. But not to my tastes. Fisto looks like is wearing a stripped sleeveless shirt that personally reminds me of a sailor, and he has overly groomed hair and facial hair. If I were to redesign him, I would make his armour pieces more pronounced, his hair and beard wilder, and I would replace his furry speedo with shorts.

No, you retard

But that's iconic, you can't have MOTU without furry speedos
