It can be hard to tell when something is in 'anime style'/heavily influenced by anime, or if it was just a style that was naturally landed upon by the artist with no influence from Japanese media. There's a lot of stuff that look quite anime-ish, even from the past well before anime as we know it.Has this kind of combo ever worked out without feeling cheap or unnecessary when done intentionally? The one artist I know that managed to make it feel right is Adam Warren
>>154290696I don't like the anime look in American stuff, but I appreciate manga influence in other ways, like paneling, choreography, etc.

>>154291586I don't understand what you mean by this. From what I can gather the elfquest artist was inspired by anime/manga.
You know why acclaimed classic anime (Cowboy Bebop, Berserk, Monster, Akira, GITS, etc.) tends to be very "universal" compared to how a lot of anime later on would become very, for want of a better term, "ANIME" in capital letters with quotation marks and all that they imply?Authors, artists and directors of the 80s into the 90s were the first generations of creators who grew up watching anime, but since anime and manga of the 60s and 70s weren't all-encompassing, they had their own niche interests and consumed lots of foreign and domestic media outside of anime and manga. Which was good: It helped them bring in ideas and concepts and build more universal stories with all their influences. As time went on, anime viewers and creators stopped consuming media other than anime, manga and videogames, resulting in an insular environment where those people who never consumed media outside the otaku sphere are now making anime and manga which only has the world view of anime and manga. And things have become, for lack of a better term, inbred (looking specifically at isekai or weekly shounen). And it's only getting worse with anime being made based on fucking gacha games and korean slop of all fucking things. There has to be an end point where a reckoning comes and this spiral stops. But the industry is led by money and the money is further and further down the spiral.
Devil's Candy fits the bill, although I think the artist is asian?

>>154291724Since anime tends to make most of their money from dvd and merch sales they try to appeal to fans to try to suck up as much money as possible.
>>154291724>>154291817Eh there are still anime/manga made by people with life experiences like the odd taxi guy and other stuff. You just have to look behind the surface. There was plenty of stuff made after 2010s by people with a lot of knowledge about other domains. Hell even the battle shonen mangaka have other interest judging on their xitter.
>>154291724>implying capeshit and western cartoons are not doing even worse than thatCome on now... as for your example I would say that Sin City is a way better example of a manga inspired comic
>>154290696Empowered was meh.
>>154291724Weekly shonen just had a history inspired manga that ran for 5 years.
>>154292078Indie cartoons are not meant to make money yet they are still the same shit made by people that only consumed children media with no life experiences. Literal 99% of pilots are just "90s/00s" nostalgia
>>154291724Watch more stuff, Bravern, the new gits, Virgin Punk, the new lupin movies, Chao, Housenka, Id invaded all recent shows made by people that know a lot of stuff outside of anime and manga
