Is it a good thing to attempt and modernize Magneto by distancing him from his origins as a Jewish survivor of the Holocaust, or is that just changing too much of him? Like I'm talking about all those people who say that they should let someone of another ethnicity play Magneto or how to fit the modern era he should be from another genocide instead.

Modernization doesn't really work. Fear and awe of atomic energy, war situations, and fads of the time are baked into many characters and trying to shift them forward just makes them strange.
