>According to series creator Mike Judge, Hank Hill was meant to be about 60 years old rather than the early 40s man he is in the show. This was changed because Fox objected to the idea of Hank being 60, believing it was more marketable if he was closer to 40. Judge has said that he still canonically considers the character to be 60.[3]

>60
No wonder Bobby is autistic if hank was meant to be that old, peggy doesn't appear to be that much younger than him if they met in high school

50 would've been a good compromise

Mike had some weird ideas for KoTH and you can see it in season 1

is that like Matt Groening wanting Homer and Krusty to be the same person and Marge was secretly a Life In Hell rabbit?

In the episode where Bobby thinks he got luanne pregnant, Judge originally had Hank unaware about luanne's prank and was going to sincerely make Bobby marry her as he would think they actually fucked

This is why Fox had Greg Daniels come onboard.

No fucking way that’s true

It had continuity early on. It was nice.

I've always thought Hank looked older than 40, he looks more 50-55 though

As someone with an old dad who would've corresponded to Bobby's age(dad had me at 50), Hank didn't really feel like a 60 year old man. I get that he's based off Tom Anderson from Beavis and Butthead, but Tom was pretty slow and clearly lost most of the time. Hank is just a little out of date but still pretty spry and
My dad's pretty active for his age and still works the yard in his 80's, but when he was working he'd still be really tired by the end of the day and rested most of the weekend. Hank feels more like a typical 40-50 year old, a 55 year old guy, tops. Even if you're healthy you start getting tired out or achy quick by that age and Hank never really seems like he gets overwhelmed or has any major aches.

A 30+ year TV veteran like Judge pitches you something and you STILL try and be difficult? 20th Century is a freakin joke. And aren't these new King of the Hill seasons more or less putting Hank and Bobby on equal footing protagonist-wise anyway? Play up Adult Bobby's marketability if you're so worried about a revival already intended for a pretty niche audience to begin with

she was also gonna be super fat and ugly

do not watch the revival

Judge's first show was Beavis and Butthead, and KOTH came out 4 years after that. So he had been working on TV for a few years when he pitched KOTH.

This was just like 7 years in his career or so,and it was a good call. Mike was clearly just leaning on reusing Tom Anderson, the old guy from’ Davis and Butthead. Making him slightly younger made him a more viable character and allowed the character to be more than the butt of a joke like Tom was

Damn... I completely misunderstood the OP's quote. Granted, I was missing lots of context. Thought this was about Hank's age in the revival specifically.

I respect Judge even more for taking a swing like that at the time and trying to develop a family sitcom with such distinct main cast dynamics. Sucks that he lost the fight to have a 60-year-old be the star at the time, but some of those sensibilities still show through in what we got. Bobby being an only child and his niece being a part of the picture also helped set it apart from Simpsons in a way MacFarlane's show pitches didn't bother doing.

Not quite. He wanted him to be 50, FOX wanted him to be 34.
