It makes me feel like I'm not making any progress even when it's absolutely the right call, like why couldn't I just get it right the first time?Oh well, it's a process. I just need to seriously tone down the exposition so it reads less like an infodump and more like something a person would actually like to read. The idea is to get you to simply put out stuff, look back on it as you finish and really look at it, warts and all, and learn from that to move onto the next figure and get better with repeated practice rather than strenuous reviewMaybe that could help with your output. That said, if it's a story you really want to land, maybe don't bother. I find this kind of thinking works best with smaller, less committed stories.In any case, keep at it

>>154321445I think that's mostly a consequence of people wanting to make their take on the franchise more mature, adding darker themes they find engaging or in an attempt to further flesh out the setting with what the author believes are interesting ideas. Sometimes there's merit to these additions, but usually it's just needless or actively detrimental to taking the story seriously ironically enough.I don't really mind Pokémon fics that try and take things in a more mature direction than the franchise is known for but the stories I enjoy the most are usually ones that feel more like the anime or games in tone.
Years ago there was a rather amusing Sonic the Hedgehog fic called "My Arms Are Blue!" where he, six others, and the occasional guest were forced by an indestructible reality warping television into watching season one of Sonic Boom. It unfortunately died in 2020 within sight of its finish line. Sonic Boom was a weird spinoff that supposedly would have been a total reboot of the franchise if the game it was tying into hadnt failed at the starting gate. The fic's humor was derived from reactions of the cast to their show counterparts and the general absurdity of their situation.I recently discovered that someone else has decided to finish it as "Reacting To The Multiverse Around Us", did a sequel using season two, and is still doing follow ups on things like Sonic Prime or games only a few characters remember in-universe and intends to eventually cover the movies. The continuation has a big tonal shift right off the bat where their mischievous host is replaced by a benevolent entity, apparently AGES, a godlike joke character from one of the racing games. While it initially seems like they went from a torture chamber to a hugbox, there are strange things going on in the background before coming to the forefront, including a meta plot about the lack of a third season and an internal mythology with its own story. I found it to be interesting for a while, but now I get the impression I'm reading someone's therapy session. I'm not saying that's automatically terrible, I just think its too much of a cliche at the moment and maybe not for me. I appreciate its attempt to use alternate continuity to fix Sonic Forces and the comics, but I just don't think that's possible, they're both unsalvageable train wrecks. I'll probably pick it back up later to see how the current story arc goes and what it intends to do with the movies. I can't say I've ever read a continuation fic of a fanfic before, are those ever any good? Do they even exist?

Currently writing a Dragon Mango fanfic called Dragon Mango: A Harrowing Tale of Horrid Hallucinations. The idea is that Mango, Bleu, and Cherry camp out on a mountain after Bleu and Mango have a slightly more heated than normal argument. Unfortunately, the spirit who inhabits the mountain whose job it is to subject visitors to nightmares of their greatest fears is there. Even more unfortunately, the spirit is horrible at his job and misinterprets some things about Mango and Bleu’s relationship. It’s meant to be an original flavor fanfic, one which mimics the tone and feel of the original as much as possible. I’m past 8000 words for chapter 1 and I should have it out very soon!

I think a big issue for me is that I'm a bit of a perfectionist and I'm not nearly as good of a writers as I wish I was. It's been ages since I wrote fanfiction (at least, "serious" fanfiction), since I've mostly been writing original fiction and poetry. It takes up the bulk of my writing time.That said, I have semi-committed myself to writing a Tangled The Series fic at some point. I wrote a short one, years ago, but I'd like to write a longer one with a more involved plot. Something in my writer's instincts tells me I'm not done with Rapunzel yet, that I have one more story with her left in me.
