The other members of the circus will find him, heartbroken and feeling like they've all done bad things but relieved that they no longer have to live with the unbearable shame and disappointment. They’ll leash him like a dog with a tag marked with his birth name, and every new brain scan for the rest of eternity will know a man was abstracted here. All that will remain of his legacy is an abstraction that is unmistakably male. This is his fate. This is what he chose. He doesn't want to go, but there is no turning back.
