what comic did you read today
>>154315225Not today, but these last weeks I had been reading JLA pre infinite crisis stuff. The arc with crime sydicate, cosmic egg and qwards. Also the arc when batman knows about the mind wipping from infinte crisis.
>>154315460>Not today, butdisqualified
>>154315225I'm a recent Energon Universe convert who in the past few days including today has been binging Transformers, Void Rivals and after all the solo miniseries started GI Joe today. Was seeing threads of it here for a while and saw people singing its praises so I gave it a try on a pirate site and after a few issues there I moved on to GlobalComix to get their Gold subscription and just binge it all.I'm no Transformers fan besides Beast Wars as a kid and GI Joe I think I know most of it from Robot Chicken sketches. But with the neutral point of Void Rivals and the slow and accessible introduction of the other established franchises, I've come to like both Transformers and GI Joe.
>>154315225I just fuckin woke up, so I haven't read shit, but Ive been reading the second Starman compendium, the first Wasteland compendium, and Nausicaa
What a sad state of affairs when an ostensibly comic book enthusiasts messaging board struggles to discuss comics they're reading.
>>154315225What If? #9, vol 1. Painfully rote. The setting barely mattered, the cast was so deep in literally-who’s that you can tell Thomas just inserted archetypes and called it a day. The best part about it was the framing device, and that only got two or three pages to shine. Felt like a nasty leftover from the worst of the Silver Age. Hoping the next few issues aren’t as boring.
>>154315225Just finished with the Sunday funnies thread. Now I've gotta read the epilogue comic for the Neopets plot that just finished and then I'll hit the TMNT storytime backlog.
Just finished reading this Lucky Luke book and it was good.
>>154315225I'm reading manga right now.>>154317455Most actual readers have left this place. Sharing a board with cartoons wasn't the best idea after all. It's like putting bad students (comicfags) in a class with pants-shitting, glue-eating retards (cartoonfags).
Finished the Marvel books so I started up the Dark Horse era of Conan. I've read chunks of it in the past but never made an effort to go through the whole of it. I think Busiek might have become my favorite writer in general.
>>154315225Been reading alot, but the really good stuff I only consume in bites since I don’t wanna hurry. Right now im at,The Masterpieces: Hellboy Short Stories Vol. 2, The Question Vol. 1, Absolute BatmanThe Good ones: JSA by Geoff Johns Vol. 3, Rick and Morty Vol. 1The Okay ones: Batman Road to No mans Land Vol. 1The ‘Fuck I dont know if I should finish this boring shit’: Iron Man Vol. 1 #126 Demon in a bottle Actively reading every day until it’s done: Everything Inhumans related, right now at FF Vol. 1 #38, but I read Thor Vol. 1 #146 to about #150 before realising I need to go back to their first appearances. So first I gotta finish everything in FF and then go to finish the stories in the thor books, which basically means I can finish the rest of the Marvel Masterworks Compendium (or whatever it’s called) to then go to the Inhumans Vol. 1 run. The stories about the Inhumans written in the Thor books have been phenomenal. Stan and Kirby really did something there, but as far as I’ve seen their works got ruined by modern writers too, like anything marvel (especially marvel) and some DC titles.
>Dan Jurgens>Roger Stern>Jerry Ordway>Wheezie Man 90s Superman was loaded
>>154322215I like Hellboy more when it's being a more casefile series than it's big ongoing story
Been starting the current World's Finest book. I like books were Superman and Batman are friends.
2023 Hulk run in preparation for Infernal Hulk
>>154321982Those are some goodies. >>154323850I like those comics too.
>>154315225I finished re-reading The Superior Foes of Spider-Man. It's still good.
>>154325634I don't like the unfunny redditor humor of that comic.
>>154326418that doesn't even mean anything
>>154315225Waiting for Alex Ross' Justice league to come in the mail, I've read nearly everything I own and I'm going crazy not having anything new right now.All I have left is to chronologically read through Peanuts, but fuck me the 1950s Peanuts comics are so unbelievably bad. I'm glad Schultz improved later but I just can't do it.
>>154315833>I'm no Transformers fan besides Beast Wars as a kid and GI Joe I think I know most of it from Robot Chicken sketchesI liked Beast Wars, Armada (the non Rod Torfulson and Herman Menderchuck variety), and Prime a lot, but yeah, Transformers has never been really my particular cup of tea either>>154317455Who has time to read when you could be illiterate anon?
i didnt
Odin #2, unfortunately. And X-Men United #4.
>>154328145>I've read nearly everything I own and I'm going crazy not having anything new right now.I've been there. Especially when you're in the mood for a certain character and you pretty much covered all you got.
>>154315833>GlobalComix to get their Gold subscription and just binge it all.faggot
>>154317455what a sad state when you write a post like that and dont even mention what comic you read i bet you dont even read comics faggot
>>154315833I pick up the energon universe GI Joes sometimes, it's actually pretty good. I buy Transformers once in a while for the covers. I ordered this upcoming incentive one just because the cover is kino.
>>154323850/co/ hates mark waid but he's based and writes good comics worlds finest is a good example where hes at his best writing old era shit and featuring other dc characters
>>154328813I like Waid as a writer. I was very into his Flash run, Kingdom Come, his Captain America books I thought were solid. I just think he needs to shut his damn yap. Social media has really made me miss the days when I didn't know anything about the people who made media.
>>154328947>the days when I didn't know anything about the people who made media.you have no idea how bad things are we literally need to return to the days where people didnt know anything about one another not just those who make media social media makes it so that we know way way too much about literally every person
>>154327578It's a comedy comic that's not funny. That means it's kinda worthless.
>>154328813I don't care about him as a person, but I haven't enjoyed any of his comics. I still think he should be the standard, since people enjoy his stuff and he's not awful.
>>154328538>unfortunatelyqrd?
>>154328558I swear as soon as I get more money, I'm getting all of those Batman by Grant Morrison omnis. Really on a Batman kick right now.
Man, and here I thought Starlin's marvel work was some trippy bullshit.
>>154329899Oh.
This is the last bastion of the comics side of /co/.
>>154330589This and /shelf/.
>>154330832/shelf/ died >>154232836, and they're a bunch of quitters, not willing to just make another one.
>>154331004I'm not a quitter I'm broke and this shit is expensive
>>154315225kinda pathetic how there aren’t more people hereim gonna be honest I woulda loved a few (You)’s on my post earlier, bummer that I cant even find faggots on fucking 4chan to talk comics
>>154331215>kinda pathetic how there aren’t more people herewe heard you the first time
>>154331004I was hoping for better advice for repairing the binding on my V for Vendetta absolute >>154277013
>>154331402Toothpicks and PVA glue.
>>154331402Actually here's a whole video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9jO_yBeWBo8&t=
>>154331567That's what I thought. I'll have to take a whirl at it soon.>>154331574I've seen these vids. I'm in a weird spot where it's definitely separating, but not nearly as much as I see in video examples.
>>154331648>but not nearly as much as I see in video examples.well you know what they say, a stitch in time saves whatever the cost of replacing a book is.
>>154331669True. Tee bee ech I wish I just bought a cheap deluxe edition instead for this specific book. I love the absolute format, but this did almost nothing to justify it, there's only about a dozen pages of extras.
>>154331727Absolutes are honestly my favorite kind of edition just for the over sized art. The extras are neat but some of these books just look gorgeous blown up. New Frontier is a whole different experience over my old trades.
Reread Bone. It made me smile.
>>154332123Awful, corny dogshit.Kidding. I haven't read it in a long time, but I wasn't the biggest fan of it then.
>>154332249It holds up better as an adult.
>>154331855Oh yeah. Especially in comics with really detailed art, or lots of panels. Besides V for Vendetta skimping on extras I think I like my other four absolutes equally, (Killing Joke, Dark Knight, Watchmen, and Kingdom Come), Kingdom come mignt have an edge if only for Alex Ross's godlike pencil sketches. His version of the Flash is something I can hardly believe an actual human being drew, it's incredible.
So, if this is the refugee /shelf/ thread I was wondering: I already own the three bigass Sandman Omnibuses. Are there any comics that the seven Absolutes have the Omnis don't? Or is the extra page count from interviews and extras?
>>154332619I was actually surprised to go back and learn that Red Robin was something Ross and Waid came up with. Ross certainly drew it better but it was such a doofy concept when Tim was wearing it.
>>154332702Yeah, that was a recurring theme with the KC characters. It's funny reading the absolute>Extremely detailed backstory about them being the children of older supers, a new Metahuman, a new inheritor of a power, etc.>You see them as background characters in 2-3 panels and never again
>>154322280Why'd it ever stop... ?
>>154331215just tell us what comic you read today and stop complainfagging
>>154334722Because we can’t have nice things.
>>154332276Stop staring at the teenaged girl's ass Fone Bone.
>>154334722Lot of reasons. Teams moved on too different projects, they couldn't keep the tightly knit nature of it together, the 2000s weren't so bad really but it wasn't the same.
Finally managed to collect all of 1963. I understand that it's pretty much dollar-bin fodder in the US, but it was an obscene amount of money to get it shipped over here.I'm not sure how much I read it back in the day, but I'm up to issue 5 now and it's pretty good, even though the first time I didn't really get how Moore seems to really hate Stan Lee. At least it goes way beyond friendly ribbing, which only becomes obvious in the faux soapboxes and mail columns. Probably the most vicious satire of the guy outside of Funky Flashman.
>>154335485Never head of that but glad for you mate
>>154335485Interesting! I know it's just a coincidence but funny seeing the title Mystery Incorporated,
>>154335485The older I get the less I like Alan Moore and possibly the British on the whole
>>154336127Look it up, it’s well worth it. The comic itself is much less cynical than your usual Moore fare, a very earnest homage to Silver Age Marvel. Not to mention the murderers’ row of artists: Rick Veitch and Stephen Bissette on pencils, Dave Gibbons, John Totleben, Chester Brown, and Don Simpson on inks.
Carol Swain's Foodboy
>>154336257Seems interesting. What's the premise?
>>154336198You're getting dumber.
>>154337245Well he's older than I am so if I'm dumb he's goddamn retarded
Not a comic overtly but an interesting book all the same.
>>154337283He's a retarded genius. You're just retarded.
>>154338001He's a delusional fish rapist
>>154336498Dude tries to take care of his friend who gets into a cult and grows more and more feral.
>>154323850I never see people talking about this book, but I started reading the ongoing a few months ago and it's absolutely fantastic, some of the best cape stuff coming out at the moment.
>>154337983It counts.
bump
>>154315225Nothing today.
YOU GUYS CAN READ?!?!?!
Are there any good books about comics? I know there's Understanding Comics and Grant Morrison has that Supergods thing.
>>154340371No.
>Check out hole in the wall shop I rarely stop at, been buying more comics lately>"You guys got any Usagi Yojimbo?">Zoomer looking through Pokemon cards at the counter says "Is that DC or Marvel">Dafuq>"It's published by Dark Horse">flouride stare>"I think Fantagraphics published it too">another older employee overhears>"Uhh, maybe out indie comics section would have something like that">nothing>see a section of hardcovers and TPBs>Almost all of them are clearly used. Sagging/warping TPBs, scuffed edges on hardcovers, scratches in dust jackets. Not horrible but definitely been through a few readers, typical used book affair>"Where's the prices?">older guy says "Oh, they're on the cover">no they aren't, there's no sticker to be found anywhere>oh no>"Do you mean the manufacturer's retail price?">Tells me "Yeah, that"Aaaaand that's the story about how I didn't buy a comic book today. How about you /co/? Almost grabbed the Sabrina Online hardback they had, would've swallowed the shame if it wasn't the dogshit zigzag therapy arc
>>154341496
>>154341643I mean I'm no expert but you'd think at MINIMUM Image would've been mentioned, if only for the current popularity of Invincible and The Boys. Usagi Yojimbo isn't that obscure, is it?
>>154341806>Usagi Yojimbo isn't that obscure, is it?It shouldn't be to anyone vested in comics. Even if only from the TMNT connection.
>>154341822That's what I thought. What a shame. There's one other comic shop in my city, but they don't carry hardcovers anymore. Just boxes of floppies, and some sporadic TPBs.
>>154341496>>154341643Booleshit
>>154343125It's what happened to me today. What's your most recent comic shopping experience?
I still remember when we were all excited about DC Rebirth.
>>154344004Superman was pretty good
>>154343796I walked into a comic shop. Everything in it was garbage like the latest issues of Absolute Wonder Woman, Absolute Transformers, and Absolute TMNT, dust-coated trades of terrible runs like Invincible, Walking Dead, and Williamson Superman, and a designated MTG play area, which was an empty dark room with a foldable plastic table and metal chairs. Some FOTM manga tankobons like Jujutsu Kaisen and I Jerked Off in a Dungeon and Accidentally Became the New Demon Lord.I walked back out empty handed.
>>154315225I found this randomly at a thrift store for 4$ so I gave it a read
>>154335485I credit Horus and Yugioh for getting me into Egyptian Mythology in my teens
>>154341496Tbh, I'm always curious and will ask point blank a manager of a comic book shop who sells 2000AD/The Megazine how well it's doing. It's just jarring to me that a book I consider mostly perfect is still largely unknown or not at all cared about aside from Dredd
>>154344872I agree that is a phenomenal book and I myself have walked right past it
>>154345050I have some modicum of hope considering that Rebellion has partnered with Lunar to properly distribute 2000AD related products stateside (though it's still 2 weeks behind the Brits) that it'll have some kind of fighting chanceIt's also getting reviewed by various comic book news sites (whether that truly counts for anything is beyond me), so that might help, but IDK, people have short attention spans and get distracted easily. Wait and see, wait and see...
>>154345346I don't know how to explain it, I just pick anything else to buy Shame on me is very good
>>154344720Yeah that sounds accurate to most small modern comic shops. Also, what's with everybody missing issues of shit? Why would I buy your series If you only have compendiums 2 and 3, but not 1?
>>154345466My LCS was just funko pops. I've known the owner for years. He was pissed as hell and sold the place to retire early.
>>154338205Is that so? I might have to check it out. Does it get storytimed here? I hardly have any refuge that isn't shitposting about Digital Circus or Vivziepop right now.
>>154346469FUCK do I hate Funko pops. I don't blame him for quitting if that's all everybody there wanted to deal in.>Shelf hogs everywhere. Comic shops, toy shops, game shops, Pharmacies, Gas stations, you name it. You aren't safe from them>Ugly as sin, but because it has (brand name) on it normaltards love them>Floods convention floors. Fuck wanting to get books, old video games, custom posters or clothing at a con, here's a third of the show floor dedicated to "Luke Skywalker, ultra-rare fuzzy green puke variant exclusive to hot topic!">Celebs at cons barely bring their own special photo prints or posters to sign anymore, half of them just have a wagon of basic funko pops you can find at walgreens to sign.>Huge. As cancerous as the modern trading card scene is, at least trading cards even slabbed are tiny. Funkos don't have the decency, just hog up inordinate amounts of shelf space. They've been making XXL versions too that have 3 foot tall boxes, just awful>Terrible for the environment, made with the cheapest nastiest PVC plastic and they get trashed all the time. Thanks for giving all of us and all of the North American wildlife testicle cancer in 20 years, Funko
>>154346653I don't think I'd mind so much if people weren't so retarded about them. You'd think we'd have learned from all the other speculator bullshit but it's something new every decade or so.
>>154315225Finished Lee/Kirby FF. Phoneposting cause im about to go to sleep.
>>154346961I think I got up to the intro to Black Panther and just kind of lost interest. Fun book but not for me. Kirby's Thor though? Fucking love that shit, easily one of my favorite runs of any title period. Even surpasses Kirby's 60's run on Cap
>>154347042That's some nice prose. Did it ever get collected as an omni?
some of batman and robin year one by waid
>>154323850good boi
>>154340389Read the rest of McCloud's books (Reinventing, Making) if you want more of the technical aspects of comics. There are other books like Eisner's instructional books if you're interested in craft and denser academic style texts out there but I suspect those might not be what you're interested in right now. Nick Sousanis' Unflattening is a good companion to Understanding Comics so I'd highly recommend that for more on visual arts. It's also done in comic book form.
>>154347428Mighty Thor omnibus vol 3 I believe going off the file name.
>>154348532Cool, thanks. I'm keeping my fingers crossed P**me day has a good sale on comics, if not oh well I save money.
>>154347603Fixed.
>>154348321>Nick Sousanis' UnflatteningI've seen it get maligned a bit. How come?
>>154341806>Image>The BoysHate to tell you, but that's Dynamite aka No One's Favourite Publisher, bud.
>>154350226I seriously have no idea who's buying all this deja thoris shit.
>>154343796Visited a comic book shop in Copenhagen because I'd heard they had 50 years' worth of back issues in stock. Turns out you can't browse them, have to order online and you can choose to pick them up at the store. Kind of a letdown, because I was really ready to do some dollar-bin diving since there are no decent comic shops in my country where I can do that. But anyway, I placed my order and at least was able to pick up some nice mint-condition Alan Moore WildC.A.T.s and Keith Giffen Trencher issues that same afternoon.
>>154349481In what ways? And where? I've never seen anyone with a serious interest in comics as a medium badmouth the book.
anon most americans only have a third grade reading level
>>154349155found the /pol/ tard

I'm taking a break from Deadly Class to read Barry Windsor Smith's Monsters. I also picked up the two latest Geiger trades that I'm behind on.

BATMAN/LOBO: DEADLY SERIOUS
>>154356734
I'm going through things that were storytimed recently but just left in another tab. I really liked Dr. Strange: Into Shamballa. There was Naruto doujin joke that appeared in my head though, and it is best the thread died long before I read it so I didn't taint it with it.
>>154357274Good thing you didn't let us know in this thread.
>>154357274Yay! Someone liked my storytime! :)No comments on the joke (though I would’ve appreciated the bump), but I hope you like the next few storytimes I do too. I have a few more planned for the rest of the summer. I wish Into Shamballa was cheaper. I can’t find it for less than, like, a hundred bucks around here. If I were a more reckless spender, that wouldn’t deter me. Unfortunately…
>>154355837Now that's good shit. You can tell how sick Grant might've been with writing Batman at that point and he just cut loose with it
>>154315225Read some old floppies today and browsed the back material of this book.Last week I said that I won't be buying any Absolute Ed. but alas..The amount of gimmick they put in this collection, with the tattered cape as dustjacket and all, is appreciated.Makes me worry when DC decides to release an Absolute Knightfall.
>>154357274>I really liked Dr. Strange: Into Shamballayep
>>154360304I was on the fence about the absolute version. I have the old paper back trades as well as the Triangle omnibus so it seems excessive.
>>154362365I skipped Triangle Era Vol. 2 to save money for this Absolute, I might buy Vol. 3 though.
