The more I think about it the more I like that pre-ep9 fan theory of Jax going on a semi-subconscious conjuring bender and basically building his own mind scape. Episode 6 and his key collection suggest he was already doing it intuitively without knowing, and he missed the conversation where it was outright explained, so for him to learn about it during a period of heightened emotions right after Caine going crazy and dying and leaving a power vacuum would make sense to set off going a little nuts with it. Plus there'd be no time limit or distractions without adventures, he could really go down a rabbit hole and wall himself off, creating a bit of a cleaner opportunity for the whole cast to dive in trying to find him
