It was decided to begin putting the Xavier's students into squads to help with their training. Sofia, David, Laurie, Josh and Noriko (given the codenames Wind Dancer, Prodigy, Wallflower, Elixir and Surge) were all put together under Dani Moonstar's tutelage as the New Mutants which also eventually added Kevin Ford (codenamed Wither) who was convinced to return to the school. But Sofia's poor leadership caused them to lose their first field day competition to the Hellions. Even worse, the FBI showed up to bring in Kevin for the death of his father so the Hellions, sans Jay Guthrie, decided to take him back and Julian was able to recruit Sofia to help them.Today is New X-Men: Academy X #6-10.Previous >>154277267
>>154321639I forgot how quick they both change sides. You don't see too much of Kevin's New Mutant look or Jay's Hellion look.Probably for the best, but White Trenchcoat Kevin was an interesting take on the guy who has consistently worn all black before it.
>>154321664And this ends this story arc. Everyone was/is kinda an asshole not gonna lie (except maybe Josh & Dust, but Josh still has that Austen stick on him)
Issue 7>>154321707In general I find Kevin to be an unlikable twat. Yeah he's got his whole deal but he's an asshole about it. He wants everyone to coddle him and feel sorry for him and when they don't he gets pissy. Same reason he hates Josh because Laurie likes him while he ignores Cessily. He's an entitled and self-absorbed prick.
I think I'm going to start skipping the recap pages for books unless they have the credits or it's the first issue of the day or a new thread.
>>154321852No arguments from me. He's got a lot of leeway due to him literally killing his dad, but he runs it and then some between coming back and joining the Hellions. He really just should've stuck around in the junkyard, he had a good thing going there.
>>154321852Yeah he is quite bad, but he doesn't enter the list of characters I'd kill if I was writing until the Kyle/Yost era when he joins Selene without much prompting (everyone was a bot OOC for the plot to work during that era)Then Krakoa came & he was resurrected & if writers cared about characters & X-Men not looking like dicks he'd probably ask for his father to be resurrected too(sorry if I bitch about Krakoa a lot, it's just I'm thinking what's been done with this character since this era? & the usual answer is sone dumb stuff in Krakoa that should be retconned out.)
Jeffrey Garrett, a character from Claremont's X-Treme X-Men.https://marvel.fandom.com/wiki/Jeffrey_Garrett_(Earth-616)
>>154322363Who starts a conversation like that I just sat down
Issue 8>>154322362They resurrected him with control of his powers and now he and Josh are buddies or something. Personally there's a part of me that thinks it's a mistake to give characters like him and Rogue total control of their powers because the tradeoff to their abilities is the cursed aspect. Without it they can just win every fight by touching someone and don't ever have to deal with the drawback of having to be very careful with something so powerful. And nah, I hate Krakoa. I realy don't like that Laurie was resurrected and then never brought up again. Noriko got killed off then came back as a lightning elemental or something. Sofia was repowered but I don't think anything was done with her. I think all the bus students came back but like 99% of the rest of the mutants right now they're in White Hot Limbo I assume. Why bring all of these characters back if you're not going to do anything with them? We're not in the Morrison era status quo where having so many random mutants just hanging around makes sense and NYX was a flop because it was just another fucking Kamala book. And unsurprisingly, like every other instance of Kamala being pushed to the forefront of something, it failed.
>>154322510Because they wanted to apologize for the inhuman push (& to a lesser degree Decimation) by giving mutant "wins" ( resurrecting dead characters , removing the cursed aspect of their power, giving them a nation that's a utopia etc) yeah Hickman wanted it to be a false utopia but it got derailed & most of the wins look questionable ( like did we need thunderbird back? Sure his most notable act was dying but it was something and now he doesn't even have that and his brother's shtick is kinda screwed up) nvm how that whole era made mutants look like dicks, like a former impoverished guy who won the lottery & can't stop rubbing it in the face of his still poor friends who he isn't going to help.
>>154322881I should mention that the headstone on this page is an in-joke. DeFillipis and Weir are good friends with Greg Rucka and Rucka's wife is Jen Van Meter.
>>154322099Did Sammy the fish kid die? I must have missed that.Dude was an Austen creation (meaning he had moments that felt like if a smiling friends episode was written by someone who thought he was doing a drama show & had no talent) but he wasn't a bad characgsry
>>154322851It's like Pierce said in the last thread, mutants acting as if they're above the law is just going to make people hate them even more and SHOCKINGLY that turned out to be the case. But the current fanbase is too dumb to actually see that because it's what they want.
>>154322928I was outright cheering when Nimrod was killing them. Also poor Moira, had her character gutted beyond belief, same thing happened to Bishop during Decimation and he came back from it & I hope Moira can too
>>154322928Also remember when the government outright using Sentinels was an event or bad future to be avoided and not the status quo? Same thing for genocidal hatred/persecution of mutants, like Mutant Registration didn't come out of nowhere it was after a terrorist attack. But ever since the Bendis era (2013) those things are treated like normal so I can see why modern fans go Overlord " I send hit squads after my son out of paranoia" Cyclops was right .
Issue 9>>154322920He was killed by Black Tom in X-Men #162 which was a few months before this arc started.
Oh the book had a consistent artist for 4 issues. a record. IIRC Pagulayan would do Planet Hulk after this so at least it's not a huge downgrade or something, even though I think Ryan's art was the best fit for this book and he never should have been moved over to New Excalibur.
>>154323069>Cyclops was right .shut up
>>154323206Dude I called him a filicidal paranoiac, I don't like Revolution era Scott at all. I was just trying to understand where the fans were coming from & with bad writing like that
>>15432337614? She looked 8.
This was supposed to start a whole thing with Laurie's father getting a position at the school and becoming an antagonist but obviously that went nowhere due to the writer change and Garrison disappeared afterwards. The closest we ever got to it was the House of M arc.
>>154323435IIRC, wasn't he depowered by M-day?
>>154323408I guess you could say she's just small for her age and a bit immature. Though yeah, you wouldn't think she's only slightly younger than Laurie.
>>154323265>I was just trying to understand where the fans were coming from & with bad writing like thatExcept it doesn't, X-men fans are the only group of fans that don't/can't separate comic stuff from the writers/editorial fuck ups. Avenger fans all acknowledge how stupid and shitty most of the 2000/2010s were and put the onus of the blame on writers like Bendis. X-men fans don't, they still hate Wanda for M-day, they hate the Avengers because muh Genosha, don't get them started on the Inhumans. They treat the characters like real life and are unable to seperate characters from the shitty events writers write them into.
>>154323468His last appearance is right before HoM and the HoM version is obviously not quite the same. He's never mentioned again but I guess you can assume he likely was.
>>154323497Fair but I don't think it's just an X-Men fan thing moreike moders stan culture. And for some reason X-Men attracts them in larger numbers.
>>154323558I think the very nature of how the X-Men tend to be presented means outcasts, geeks, losers, autists, and others project a lot onto them and thus have a hard time separating the fictional aspect from their own reality. It's the same reason a lot of Krakoa fans seem to like it for being a perfect utopia where all the gays/geeks/autists/whatever get revenge on the big bad chuds who bullied them IRL.
Jeffrey did get resurrected on Krakoa but Kim and Noriko's big sister instincts never show up again.
>>154323637I wonder if this wasn't a set up for Jeffrey to be resurrected
>>154323637Also everyone seems to have lost all familial instincts on Krakoa (looking at you Guthrie's and leaving the non-mutants behind)Makes sense, the orgies would have been awkward otherwise.
Issue 10
>>154323822Ah yes, David gets told the future by 2 mutants who don't have prophecy powers.I'm serious they pretty much gaslight him so bad they give him PTSD.
>>154323779The actual twist of Krakoa should have been that the island was subtly brainwashing the population to want to stay both as a means of defending itself from outsiders and so it'd have a constant food source it could feed on. It being a weird living lotus eater machine would have been the perfectly reasonable explanation for why everyone was so gung ho about being there, so militant about staying there and bringing in more mutants, why they were obsessed with orgies and "making more mutants" and in general why everyone was so OOC. And then someone snaps out of it which leads to everyone breaking free and defeating Krakoa. That was the actual logical path for the story as opposed to what we got.
>>154323901Well, we see what unlocking all of his knowledge has actually done to him so... better or worse than the psychic gaslighting?
>>154323921I mean yeah that would have been nice.Just add that Moira was actually a disguised Krakoa or that she was brought back and mind controlled by the island and it ends with freeing her and I'm onboard.
>>154324011It was already a living psychic island that tried to feed on the X-Men before. Turning it into the Thorian from Mass Effect 1 seems like a pretty logical next step.
>>154323941Just wanted to emphasize that Moonstar & Emma's powers were psychic not prophetic in nature. I understand that it was supposed to be a lesson to teach David but they had no real assurance that any of that stuff would happen. (At best they might have calculated that it was probable)
>>154324103Well yeah, they weren't showing him the actual future they were trying to scare him away from taking the easy road by showing him a VR version of his own fears of what would happen if he unlocked his powers fully.
>>154324128>henry kissingerlol
That's it for today. Next time we'll finish up the pre-HoM portions of Academy X with New X-Men #11-15.
>>154324219I know this is somewhat offtopic but I'm intrigued by the pop culture view of Kissinger as this Machiavellian figure who expands the American empire in each corner of the worldAnd the real life version who was a biggest proponent of detente ( so much that hewyas begging the soviets to not overrun South Vietnam too fast) and was pro noninterventionism (Bangladesh war) . No saying dude was moral cause he wasn't (look at his yugoslav war comments but he wasn't this jingoist mastermind)
>>154321212Damn, I missed the previous storytimes.
>>154321212Chatching with the previous storytime I really don't remember Surge being so cuntish. No wonder she ended up getting demoted and never made into the main team.
>>154326402She'd been living on the streets halfway around the world for years after getting disowned by her father, was a drug addict beause that was the only way to keep her powers under control, got turned driven away from the school originally thanks to Julian being a dick, then right after she joined the school got blown up, then she got paired up with a roommate who she found to be a backwards and judgmental representation of everything she despises. She has pretty valid reasons for being a bitch IMO.
>>154300180Jay had his days counted since he was just Angel without the cool Arcangel transformation. I don't know what the writers were trying giving him that set of powers.
>>154326733Powers aren't everything. Jay's whole thing was being the troubled emo pretty boy. Also the way he dies is completely retarded and makes no sense at all beyond the writers deciding they wanted to kill him and so his powers suddenly worked the way they did for that story.
>>154326733The Academy X writers tried to focus on the stuff that made him different from Warren He had a stronger healing factor, which basically brought him back from the dead a few timesAlso his ability to recreate any sound. Which could have been really cool if he had copied Banshee's scream or Siryn's mesmerizing song>>154327669Jay's healing factor fading over time is something the Academy X writers established, so saying they're connected to the wings isn't really a big change
>>154321338Rahne really looked underage here. lol
>>154321416One thing that I can appreciate about this old storytimes is that work as a window to the past status quo. And thanks to that I can understand why people hated the Scott and Emma relationship. With moments like these were Scott acts like the whipping boy of Emma and not like a real fodder. Most adult characters feel totally flanderized and closer to the useless adults from a teenage sitcom.
>>154321588Why this would be a problem for Dust? Didn't her clothes already made from her own sand?
>>154323901>David gets told the future by 2 mutants who don't have prophecy powers.Could be worse, he could have been told his actual future by a prophet
>>154327928She's always been small and she's only 19 in these stories so barely older than Josh and the others.
>>154322030>>154322050Does Rahne was always a mess character wise? Like I don't remember a status quo of her that would be called a good place to be.
>>154322577This would be a very funny way to die.
>>154328724Honestly yeah, I don't know much about her but every fucking time I see her she's in some sort of nightmarish situation>Her entire backstory>Getting stuck in werewolf form >Everything involving her son>Her banging a student>Being an unwilling part of an accidental harem thanks to Maddox fuckery>Everything involving her OTHER son>Getting hate crimed to death before Krakoa so Wolverine and Psyloke can do Punisher shit to randosSwear to Christ X-witers have some sort of hate-on for her on par with Havok.
>>154324342This is genuinely a happier ending for Josh than what really happens to him afterward.
>>154328811Yeah haha wouldn't it be awkward
>>154328724>>154328816I think its because shes christian
>>154323497I mean, isn't that most comics fans? And in this case the people that hated Krakoa? The problem was the editorial mandate of expand the status quo or greenlighting the idea.
>>154329005>isn't that most comics fans?Sure maybe but from I've experienced it's the most apparent in X-men fans. I mean most spiderman fans don't blame Peter for OMD they blamed Quesada and co. When Civil War happened Iron Man/Cap fans didn't point fingers at each other they blamed Millar and the editorial for the shitshow. However when Wanda had her terrible, awful, not good day and erased the X-gene from existence X-men fans blamed her and not the creatives responsible, and they hated her for decades (they had to make a couple issues to try and redeem her during the Krakoa and some of the fans still hate her even after all that).>And in this case the people that hated Krakoa?Anon the inability of people to separate fiction from reality is what lead to Krakoa being a shitshow. Pic related caused a shitshow that Remender had to write a scene defending himself a couple months later because X-men fans bought into the metaphor a bit too much.
Pile of shit.
Lol either the Lokifag or an X-fag is salty
>>154328709yeah, it's just the clash with her previous portrayal in this story that makes it weird imo
>>154328841Poor Red Raven
>>154328816>>154328724Eh, she was basically fine after X-factor 100 through her Excalibur stint
>>154328816I think you're confusing her Monet or Syrin she wasn't part of the Madrox harem."OTHER son"again you're confusing her with Syrin or wanted to write other child (cause she technically has a son & daughter)
>>154328051It's either Scott is Emma's whipping boy, engaging in academic misconduct, in this series.Or Cykes basically a toxic boyfriend (Astonishing)
>>154322510tbf Noriko died & resurrected after Krakoa ended. It was in that x-force series with forge
>>154323517Well I remember the 198 one-shot which was supposed to list all the active mutants & IIRC he wasn't mentioned there.
>>154323941Oh yeah, it made gay because he unlocked the knowledge of Emma's and Scott's love making sessions (from Emma's perspective) and he realized he liked being a bottom.Yeah PTSD is better.
>>154321370she looks so CUTE in that second panel! ^v^
