Season 1 was run and written by Kirkman but a lot of its production was still handled by actual industry veterans who had worked on animated shit before. After season 1 he decided "fuck it, I know what I'm doing" and moved 100% of the production in-house to his own studio he started, so it's 100% under his control from the ground up and he's running the studio despite having no actual idea how to make an animated show.
