It can be used to refer to a more abstract concept of receiving something. 'Getting better' means that you 'receive' a new state of being. Just like getting better means to receive better health you could say that 'getting in' or 'getting over something' means you receive a new position in space or of mind. 'Get along' therefore, in line with that, means to receive another person's company. 'Get on' makes complete sense intuitively and logically if used as 'change your position to be on top of something', but it doesn't make sense in the British way. I'm from the South for what it's worth and people here got their accents from copying British merchants over 200 years ago so maybe we picked up some phrases from them? I think it's important to keep in mind that this Rey is not real (and he can't hurt you) and this form he has might not have any meaning at all. Rey and Annie will end up together in the end! This does not have to be the end! Rey can still get it!
