The movie wouldn't have really benefited from a willing antagonist, in fact it was refreshing to have the trouble be more conceptual than, well, an evil villain like Wish's or a twist villain or a tragic villain. Should Bruno have hated his family and village? Maybe. It's a family movie though and the narrative does a lot of heavy lifting with that in mind.
