The smurf species (Smurfo Smurfian) exhibits a form of behavioral sexual dimorphism rarely seen in the animal kingdom.

Males of the species are hyper-specialized toward performing a singular task, which they excel at. However, because of this extreme degree of specialization, all male smurfs are incompetent at performing any task other than the one they are suited for. Additionally, every smurf village has only a single male for each relevant task. How overlap is prevented is currently unknown. Some biologists speculate that the patriarch of each village, or "Papa Smurf", feeds a royal jelly, similar to those used by insect species, to infant smurfs, which insures their physiology develops in a way that is best suited to their assigned task.

Female smurfs, however, posses a much more generalized skillset. While they excel at no task in particular, they are reasonably competent at just about any task the village needs. Biologists speculate that this dimorphism aids in the survival of the village. Whenever a crisis occurs that requires more than one individual to perform a certain task, the female smurfs can assist the singular male smurf who normally performs that task. The life of a smurf village is fraught with peril, as they are often preyed upon by human wizards due to their delicious taste and alchemical comparability with gold, so the generalized skills of the females provide the communal structure of the village with much needed flexibility.

Occasionally, smurf villages will engage in "lost village" behavior, in which the males and females of the village will separate and lose all memory of each other's existence. Biologists believe this behavior is a mechanism designed to prevent smurf overpopulation, conserving resources by temporarily halting breeding.

As smurfs are a notoriously elusive species, research into their biology is still ongoing.
