Maybe the voice actors aren't acting hard enough and are just reading the lines, or maybe the dialogue has a very first draft kind of feel, but it just feels too one-note. Also, it feels like there's a missing five minutes at the beginning, because something dropped into the action. Normally in these hero's journey-type stories, the story starts with the hero living their usual typical mundane life, so that when they're forced to flee or answer the call to adventure, we get hit by how much they are sacrificing. Here we're just dropped straight into the action of them already starting to flee. We don't even know the name of the village they're running away from. It's like if the Hobbit or the Fellowship of the Ring started with Bilbo/Frodo already leaving the Shire, and we don't even get told it's the Shire. I know it doesn't have pilot in the title, but this is basically a pilot.
