I think they thought it was their ticket to making movies instead of TV, so they really worked hard on it and did a lot of stuff that they couldn't do on TV. But their other films under-performed, so they had to go back to TV.

Fun fact, after Team America their next movie was going to be a parody of tokusatsu, made with real rubber suits and miniature city models. Oddly, it was going to be PG and family friendly.
