There's something that I'm struggling to understand about indie animation in terms of writing and tone. When I was a kid, I absolutely hated "kiddie shit". Whether that be Disney cartoons, cartoons forcibly sanitized underneath a corporate body or from the complaints of soccer moms and always wanted to see darker or more mature themes in animation.I'm autistic myself and I absolutely do not relate to this particular brand of autism where they are obsessed with things like musicals, keeping everything safe and happy, etc.Instead of wanting darker or more mature themes in animation, everything is the same, self-censored, PG-13, quippy, tumblr/MCU tier tone. Like the creators simply refuse to expand beyond that tiny bubble of possible tones, themes and writing. Nothing is allowed to be controversial, edgy or even out there anymore. Why is this? I don't relate to this shit at all. What's the point of it being indie if it's not allowed to push the bar at all?

>>154356613>where they are obsessed with things like musicals, keeping everything safe and happy, etc.A lot of these people grew up on musicals.>Instead of wanting darker or more mature themes in animation, everything is the same, self-censored, PG-13, quippy, tumblr/MCU tier tone. If it's too mature, iPad babies get blocked from watching it on YouTube, and quippy humor is easy to write (or, rather, sincerity is hard).>Like the creators simply refuse to expand beyond that tiny bubble of possible tones, themes and writing.A lot of them actually do, but the writing is so on-the-nose that the subtlety and tact get lost, so any underlying messages could be lost, compounded by the fact that a lot of these writers don't know what they have. There's a good lesson in Hazbin that accountability needs action behind it in order to matter. There's a good lesson in TADC to be content with what you have instead of letting nostalgia for a past you never really had destroy you. Those lessons are refreshing, but they're more or less sidelines instead of subtexts since the story the writers want to tell are too bloated, since they never took the axiom of "kill your darlings" to heart.>What's the point of it being indie if it's not allowed to push the bar at all?Indie studios need to eat too.
>>154357084>TADC to be content with what you have instead of letting nostalgia for a past you never really had destroy you. When the fuck was this ever the theme in TADC? Is this just ChatGPT?
>>154356613animation expensive af. gotta be marketable and easily available on youtube not demonetised
>>154357160What the fucks the point of it being indie if it's not allowed to push the bar?
>>154357192Mainstream shit pushes it even less, so your other option is nothing.
>>154357213That's complete bullshit. There's other indie shows that are currently edgy and trying to push the bar, but aren't as popular.
>>154357192go read Dog Nigga, it's free It's about a guy who was born after his father raped a dog so now he wants to rape his father in revengebar pushing enough? you can probably find more comics in the depths of comicfury.com among the furry stuff made by children since the bar pushing stuff will have lower budgets
>>154356613YouTube is more sanitized and toothless than network television 40 years ago at this point, to the point where younger generations have invented newspeak like “unalive” “grape” etc.Hosting videos on your own site is too expensive and it would just get buried by search enginesI guess Newgrounds is the last place you could go
>>154357232Creator is making an indie cartoon of DN actually the first one is out already and it fucking ripshttps://m.youtube.com/watch?si=_w8XD2EQxFq7Fb2-
>>154357192if you're dealing with high budgets, the point is to earn money without having to deal with other corporate people above you
>>154357192There are plenty of actual indie animations and animators out there that do thisLook at Flash Gitz and Freedom ToonsYou and /co/ just like to focus on mainstream garbage that is indie in name only
>>154356613youtube doesn't even have a sort by newly uploaded videos anymore. at this point you HAVE to work the algorithms on social media websites and get popular to even have a chance of getting the funding to continueif you don't want to deal with social media websites, then you have to be an indie studio like Cartoon Saloon that works with the traditional movie distribution channels
>>154357438(for high budget animations)
Bump
>>154356613This is going to sound depressing, but the sad reality is that within (mainly) American animation culture, shows like TADC ARE pushing the bar because mainstream productions are either two options of extremes: extremely safe kids comedy or extremely raunchy adult comedy. There's no options for anyone wanting a series that's more like live action productions in terms of writing, so people usually give up on cartoons and just watch anime if they want animation.
