The first comparison that comes to mind for me is Agent Stone from the Sonic movies: loyal second-in-command, entertaining presence, maybe gets a little extra characterization, but ultimately not someone central to the story in any way, shape or form. You forget about them until they randomly pop up here and there. People love latching onto background characters, so they projected all sorts of things onto her. Even when Jessica kept making cryptic comments about Lute and hinting that there was more going on, I don't think most people assumed it was anything major. I remember more people expecting Carmilla to become hugely important. So a character like Lute being positioned for a major storyline wasn't really on most people's radar. Then Season 2 happened, and suddenly a lot of what Jessica had been saying started making sense. Lute isn't being treated like a random side character. She's being treated like someone with a long-term arc, a culmination, a reveal, and a major role in the Heaven storyline. I think that's where some of the pushback comes from. People are realizing she isn't just a blank slate background character. Her role appears to be much bigger than many initially assumed. Jessica spoiled it but I guess in a way it's a happy coincidence that it didn't take off or people didn't take it seriously.

That's kind of her thing. If you're casting a generic henchman, you don't necessarily go hunting for that specific skillset, and someone who hasn't had an experience in animation/voice acting. Even before season two, Jessica was talking about Lute like she knew there was a lot more going on with the character than people realized. Not in a "she's important because she's voiced by a famous person" way, but in a "this character has an actual arc" way. That's why I think her casting may reflect what the writers always intended for Lute long-term. Jessica's strengths as a performer line up remarkably well with where Lute's story appears to be going: anger, grief, fanaticism, loyalty, instability, deteriorating mental health, and eventually some kind of payoff. It's also worth remembering that this was Jessica's first major animation role. She wasn't an established animation actress being brought in because she fit a stock villain archetype. She came from Broadway. They specifically looked at her voice, performance style, and acting range and decided she was the right fit for Lute. Looking back now, that choice makes a lot more sense than it did in Season 1. You don't bring in the Jessica Vosk for a character you intend to leave as a one-note henchman standing behind Adam.

It's easy to chalk it up to hypocrisy, which is completely believable given their characterization, and we see hypocrisy from Lute in season 2 anyway. I just would have been curious how they would have justified it. But it's neater if none of Adam's family are down in hell, especially because he makes fun of Charlie for seeing the sinners as her family. That gave me the distinct impression that none of his own are actually down there.

The current storyline does not support that whatsoever. It might have been true in the pilot? But the pilot is so so vague... Also, bear in mind that Jessica Vosk, Lute's VA, did an interview before the show was released on prime, and she's been hinting at an identity reveal with Lute since that first interview. I think, like I said, it was an idea that was proposed, but it just never came to fruition. Wheb the series took form proper, and was greenlit by Amazon, they solidified several plot points.
