There's an article by Ivan Brunetti where he talked about the time he tried out to be the replacement cartoonist for Nancy (this was when the syndicate wanted to replace Jerry Scott, who I think already launched Baby Blues at this time with Rick Kirkman) and Brunetti claimed that there were other comic people trying out, including Seth and David Mazzuchelli. The syndicate decided to go with Gilchrist.

The ladder has been pulled up from that type of experience since the dawn of the 21st century when creators learned from Peanuts that rerunning old comics or were incessant on family taking over the comic business was more viable than letting someone new come in. Millenials/Zoomers don't have the experience or know-how to make a comic strip because they were essentially gatekept out and boomers are slowly dying out of the business.
