The X-Men Science Team versus Department H - For the Life of Schwarzschild!

Comics in this thread:
>X-Men #32
>Generation X-23 #5
>Moonstar #4
>Wolverine #22
>>
Bump if you're reading.
>>
Oh yeah, Department H. For anyone that cares, they don’t reference their last appearance in Wolverine #14-16.
>>
>”Quentin, can you warn them telepathically?”
Wouldn’t communicating with them through telepathy count as an activation of mutant power and cause them to attack though?
>>
>”They’re psi-shielded. [...] They’ll know I’m doing it, and then they’ll start shooting.”
See, I told you.
>>
Thanks a lot Schwarzschild, really helpful of you to just escalate the situation.
>>
>>
Dextroamphetamine-X makes another showing again after we last saw it in X-Men #13-18.
>>
Sorry Ben, you’re coming with Quentin.

>Schwarzschild has a mental bomb inside that will render him and any telepaths that try to search him brain-dead
It was rather obvious that 3K would install a failsafe like that in a worst case scenario.

>Jean is making an appearance soon
So she might be the surprise appearance in DNX that MacKay teased in that interview.
>>
And now for Generation X-23.

Last month, Laura, X-Infinite and X-92 began to look for Gabby and the rest of the Generated after they had been kidnapped by the Facility’s forces. By cutting up her arm and making a hole into the car that she was being transported in, Gabby was able to make it so that Laura could track her scent to the Facility that they were being sent to. As Laura went into the Facility, X-Infinite suggests that they split up so that he can deal with the security and the Robo-Bubs inside the building. But this was in reality a trap for Laura, as X-Infinite kills all of the personnel inside the Facility using the Robo-Bubs and reveals that he had tipped the Facility to kidnap the Generated the whole time and manipulated Laura into helping him take over the Facility so that he could continue to make more experiments. Laura was pinned down and slowly bleeding on the floor until her one hope of survival revealed herself: X-80, who had been alive the whole time!
>>
>>
So the X-80 we see here is actually a past version of her…?
>>
>>
>>
>X-Infinite is also going to experiment with Gabby’s healing factor
Honestly not that surprising.
>>
Finally, we get the true origin of X-Infinite (formerly known as X-39).
>>
>>
>>
So Facility 23 went from combining mutant powers for making artificial mutants that will be used as weapons to combining mutant powers and offering them for the billionaires to make them live longer and more powerful?
>>
>>
>>
>>
Bye X-80, thanks for the help!
>>
>>

It also showed up in Infernal Hulk #7

Oh, X-99 just tricked him.

>”For now, you can stay with us.”
I guess they’re crashing in one of Logan’s old safehouses in New York like Laura did last time in her solo.

Not sure what the point was in blowing X-Infinite and X-66 up if they’re going to be revealed to have survived a couple of pages later, but I guess the cast have to think that they’re dead for the time being.

And now for Moonstar.
>>
Previously, Dani was struggling as Dáinsleif was combing her memory in search of something important to her. The important memory ended up being the location of where Dani’s parents lived! Teleporting out of the cave in China to Colorado, Dani and Kian returned only to find the house of Dani’s parents empty, meaning that Kyron had kidnapped them. Not only did they have no clue where Kyron was, he was now searching for the Tablet of Death and Entropy which contains a spell that would aid his ritual of killing all life! And now Dani is forced to make a decision...
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
>”My parents are bait. He won’t kill them without me present. We’ll go after the tablet first.”
Sounds like a plan.
>>
>Dani has learned an advanced acceleration spell
Wait, why didn't you use this then back in Issue #2?
>>
>They got to Iran in a couple of hours
Okay now this just makes the events in Issue #2 read even dumber. If you had both access to instant teleportation and acceleration spells, how the hell did it take you days to get to that cave in China where you knew that Kyron was going to be?
>>
Suddenly, zombie animals
>>
>>
Wtf, an Amenth spell?
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
Now it’s time for Kian’s origin story (not Yanisa though, because she’s dead).
>>
Dani, I told you last time. You can do better than him.
>>
>>
>The tablet suddenly became giant and got embedded into the earth after its last appearance
Oh come on, how the hell did that happen?

Oh no, not Dani’s parents!

Funny thing I just realized, both of Allen's minis (Magik & Colossus, Moonstar) are about a villain casting a gigantic ritual.

Let’s see how it all ends next time.

>Marvel Comics is turning back the clock this summer with a new line of ’80s Variant Covers by acclaimed artist Alexander Lozano, celebrating mutantkind’s most iconic decade with plenty of neon, attitude, and retro fashion.

>Set to appear across X-Men titles throughout July and August, the cover series reimagines some of Marvel’s most beloved mutants through the lens of 1980s pop culture. Storm, Wolverine, Colossus, Rogue, Magik, and Mystique are all given bold new looks inspired by the era of arcades, synth music, denim jackets, and larger-than-life style.

>The covers arrive alongside Marvel’s renewed focus on one of the franchise’s defining periods. This week saw the launch of X-Men: Outback by Steve Orlando and Stephen Segovia, a new series revisiting the legendary era when the X-Men operated out of the Australian Outback following one of the team’s most transformative chapters.

>“I discovered my love for the X-Men back in the 1980s,” Lozano shared. “For me, there’s hardly anything that captures the unique sound and atmosphere of growing up in the ’80s better than the X-Men in their stylish costumes. They were the unsung heroes who had to face impossible odds.”

>Lozano also drew inspiration from the decade’s fashion and youth culture, imagining what might happen if the X-Men were forced to navigate one of the era’s greatest challenges.

>“But while the X-Men were busy fighting Magneto, Dark Phoenix and the Hellfire Club, a young generation was trying to find its own identity, somewhere between Miami Vice and punk,” Lozano said. “So I thought it only fair to put my beloved X-Men through their greatest test of all: the Uncanny ’80s fashion!!!”

>The six-cover series highlights fan-favorite mutants in eye-catching new outfits while embracing the colorful energy that defined both the decade and many of the X-Men’s most memorable stories

>>
>>154375500
They brought that up last issue. Their being sensitive to magnetic and gravitational distortions made them helpful for assessing and navigating the situation.
>>
>>154373579
Beast, you are in nothing but a pair of compression shorts. Where the fuck were you hiding that?
>>
>>154373707
The whole thing was a trap from the beginning. 3K Beast sees Schwarzschild with the X-Men in the AOR future. So the whole kicking him out in a way that clearly left him alive was a trap for the X-Men. This book is so much better than Uncanny just by having competent plotting.
>>
>>154374609
I decided to check it
Since the series never says where in the Western Shandong Province they are (and since I know nothing of China when it comes to locations), I'm just going to assume that they're somewhere around Mount Tai
>Boulder, Colorado to Western Shandong Province, China: 10466,81 km
>Boulder, Colorado to Hyrcanian Forests, Iran: 11190,34 km
So the distance is actually shorter than the distance traveled in this week's issue
But the worst part is that the artifact that they're looking for (Hunping) apparently do not exist in the Shandong Province to begin with, oops
>>
>>154376042
I'm starting to think Ashley Allen is not actually a particularly good writer and Magik sold entirely on the back of goonerbait covers. Of course I hate Magik so never read it but I tried reading Moonstar because I like Dani and it's thoroughly forgettable and empty so I feel confident in this assessment.
>>
>>154374762
To be fair they could have thought it was someone trying to fuck with Graviton
>>
>>154376233
I will give credit where credit is due, she wrote an X-title that's core premise wasn't anti mutant bigotry for once
>>
Krakoa, where are you? I';m missing you

>Let’s see how it all ends next time.
nobody cares
>>
>>154376233
Nah, people like her Magik comics and complained about JSC and DNA being the main cover artists
The problem with this is more that Dani is not only a character that works better in teams or bouncing off of characters she knows instead of OCs, but that Allen is clearly just using this mini to continue the Society of the Eternal Dawn plot that she began in her Magik run instead of in Magik & Colossus, and using it to set Dani to return and take over the organization as she hinted at in Magik #10

Magneto is an incredibly realistic and well written character purely by accident. He's got severe BPD or just straight up psychopathology and absolutely nobody to reign him in so what you end up with is this psycho who will say and do whatever it takes to get people off his back until he can strike. They wanted to make a flawed but noble anti-hero what they made instead is one of the most realistic psychopaths

I've never understood why Canada out of all places ended up becoming WWII Germany against mutants in Marvel
>>
>>154374663
Why are they even pretending that this is a continuation of X-Men TAS and not just the writers throwing in whatever shit from modern X-Men they want while poorly skinwalking as TAS? What place does a shitty Schism era character have in a '90s X-Men series? They would have been better off just doing a continuation of Wolverine and the X-Men.

If only there was a school comic out where she could be around people she knows
Oh wait...
>>
>>154377570
It's more just a victim of story circumstances. Wolverine is Canadian and has a shady past so the shady stuff happened in Canada. Alpha Flight is tied to Wolverine which means Department H is which means they get to do all the shady stuff too. If Wolverine was a Dane then Denmark would be the most evil country in the MU not Canada.
>>
>>154377595
Man this is just a cameo, they also had eye boy, nature girl, Glob and Synch in one shot, after all they need to populate the school and the Gen X kids wont cut it.
>>
>>154377604
Canadians have always been genocidal maniacs, they just get overlooked by America being right there
>>
>>154377755
I don't think they should be there even as cameos. It completely destroys the point of aping and being set within a certain time period and being evocative of a certain period of the comics and Marvel if you're just pulling in characters and concepts from way later. Especially shitty 2010s stuff.

Being a teacher killed her momentum

Whenever she's been a teacher she has usually been confined to whatever was the current X-Kid book
Which means she doesn't get to team up with the A-List X-Men in the flagship and make a name for herself the way that Magik or Cannonball did

And in the X-kid books, the majority of the focus is usually on the kids, so she doesn't get much development of her own

It's a vicious cycle because other than Magik and Cannonball, and to a lesser extent Sunspot and Monet, none of the X-students have ever fully graduated and integrated themselves into becoming mainstays on the flagship X-Men teams
Getting stuck in a teacher role seems to be the glass ceiling for most of them, like Chamber or Karma or Husk

(Jubilee and Kitty don't count since they have other factors in their favor)

>Getting stuck in a teacher role seems to be the glass ceiling for most of them, like Chamber or Karma or Husk
could be worse, they could be Shan or Amara

Oh right. What does Amara even do now? Like has she ever had a job? IIRC her fake Rome doesn't even exist anymore so she's not even a fake princess anymore.

Wolfsbane was the big success story back in the 90s
She was on X-Factor and other spin-off teams like Excalibur and got action figures and appearances in crossovers

But then they mishandled her in the 00s, with the patricide and the cannibalism and the werewolf pregnancy
And she hasn't recovered

>Being a teacher killed her momentum
She was stuck as another warm body in an X-Force run that I like but was shedding readers and prior to that spent a good chunk of the '90s as part of the MLF prior to the reveal/retcon that she was a deep cover SHIELD agent.

We've clearly moved beyond being nostalgic for things worth being nostalgic about and instead we're looking back to the days when everything was awful, just a different kind of awful to today.

I guess this explains the Krakoa nostalgia too.
