DCAU Joker has always been the best.
he's not some kind of principled visionary, he's not a tragic, tortured soul who was PUSHED into a life of crime.
He's just a murderous thug who got a chemical dip once and decided to play off the skin and hair as his theme, but secretly really just wants money, and will throw anyone else under the bus if it suits him. Not even because it's funny, just because he's a piece of shit. Every time he's pushed hard enough, we see he drops the act.
Joker's Millions made it real clear that he isn't compulsively into the humor thing, he just wants to be a rich dick. and Return of the Joker was an incredibly satisfying cap to that. He's not even GOOD at comedy, he only gets by because Bruce is a plank of wood. Once you laugh at HIM, he throws a tantrum.

Joker in BTAS was basically a zany gangster with a motiff, sure he was crazy and all but he wasnt so crazy that he didnt care about his wellbeing or didnt have normal human reactions to stuff. There is obviously a bit of a spectrum here between tending towards the more insane genius or the 20s gangster. and clearly modern depictions of Joker have perhaps stretched the character too far into the crazy part. But this is just an evolution that mirror's Batman's evolution. Batman and Joker are only supposed to be a cut above gangsters and policemen. Modern Batman has been integrated into the JL to such an extent that he has been turned into a nearly all powerful surveillance force over the whole world who can do more than literal governments. So, in response Joker has been turned into the literal embodiment of chaos to keep up.

I think you're reading a stronger claim into my post than I intended. I wasn't arguing that these aren't the takes they animated from. My point was that we're still listening to raw footage (in the video edited only edited to have the music track on) rather than a proper finished episode, so we're missing things like final audio mixing, sound design, and overall presentation.

As for Curry sounding threatening, that's obviously subjective. I just hear certain moments where he comes across as more menacing than Hamill's early BTAS Joker. That doesn't mean I think his overall performance would have been better, only that I don't think the test footage is necessarily the fairest basis for judging what the final result would have felt like.
