The revamped show that came out around 2003-05 was really good and even had a solid video game to go with it. But what's the deal with this movie? Because everyone I ask that has seen it has nothing but glowing things to say. I saw it as a kid, and a couple times since then, and I dig the whole thing, I remember it being well received among friends and peers. Freddie Highmore was alright, did a downright good job considering he was only around 14. Nic Cage, Sam Jackson, Eugene Levy, fuckin' Bill Nighy. Sutherland, Tudyk, fuckin' Rico from Hannah Montana, it's a pretty cool cast lineup. I know it doesn't deliver exactly what everyone expects when they think Astro Boy, but the movie was good and could have been a springboard to some even better singles, or even usher in a new show set in its canon. Though that seems like the sort of think that would have been on Nickelodeon. I think it just got a bad rap for being an "anime inspired movie" before they were fully mainstream. Speed Racer was the year before and it wasn't terribly well received at the time, despite being the same sort of case where I know plenty of people who will talk about how great it was. Speed Racer is unironically a top tier flick for me, I end up watching it on my birthday every 2-3 years. Dragonball Evolution was less than a year prior as well, which I'm sure some of these armchair film reviewers couldn't help but think about and relate because anime. There's no doubt it's a bad Dragon Ball adaption, but I think it's perfectly fine for a cornball action movie targeted toward teenage boys. I had a girlfriend that made me watch through Shameless and ended up liking Jimmy-Steve and Fiona as Goku and Bulma. My point though is that Astro Boy just came out at the wrong time and had to fight 2000's anime movie stigma.

And not only does it not connect to the main plot at all, but it's incredibly predictable for an original story beat that wasn't from the original manga, so the entire time I was just waiting for it to be over. Astroboy was too violent for "protect the children" parents, and too cerebral for "dats book lernin" parents.There were a few scenes in most of the adaptions of bumbling idiot parents, and racists didn't like the "robots as oppressed people" morals, so I'm sure a few parents wanted to feel personally insulted about being told to make logical choices.

There's two or three major factors"Firstly: It was in black and white. Color TV BOOMED in the mid 60's and TV became an arms race for colorful shows. Astro Boy's appeal to TV networks was as a cheap syndicated show, but once dozens of color alternatives popped up it basically threw it off syndication for years. Second, there wouldn't be another Astro Boy tv series until the 80's, by which time the US was gripped with a bunch of breakout toy tie-in shows. There's also some issues with the content of the JP shows needing to be censored, but even then there was just a lack of presence of the character in new media for decades at a time. It was ok in Japan because the anime was more an advertisement for the manga, which Tezuka continued to work on through those decades, but that wasn't happening in the US.
