Why did Astro Boy not take off in America like Popeye, Betty Boop, Felix, and Mickey Mouse? Was he too advanced to age as well as them?Youd expect people to think robots were cool.
Why would he?
>>154395640this is not a cool robothe's an important steppingstone. we wouldn't have Rockman without him. but... we have Rockman, so>DUNNANAAAA SUPER FIGHTING ROBOT
>InB4 Sharkfag/Imagifag comes in to ruin this thread and my night. Those three hours in the theater are the ones I can't reclaim. Fuck you, Gunn.
It did. It was very big at the time of those contemporaries making rounds. It just had no staying power after the black and white cartoon.
>>154395719Mega Man was mostly inspired by Casshern. That said agreed that Astro Boy is not cool in design and the story really goes nowhere. If One Piece gets accused of meandering around with no direction then Astro Boy is worse because it never establishes a goal. The story of the robot oppression goes nowhere when you think about it for the original manga and series. And no later reimaginings don't count when Tezuka was already dead.
>>154395640They chose the worst possible translation names and voice actors ever every time they attempted an adaptation
>>154395640Like >>154395787 said it WAS big, so was Speed Racer. However the franchise is not american and their owners were not particularly concerned with exploiting foreign markets. They did one license and left. You only get Japanese franchises becoming mainstays that when with Nintendo of America and SEGA America get started.
>>154395811and Casshern derives from whatsisname, and whatsisname derives from so and so, and so and so derives from Tetsuwan Atom. Point is, everything Atom has going for him, we've kind of moved on from, and expanded on, PLUS other things. Plus not feeling like it's the fucking 40s, y'know?
Have any of you guys watched Pluto? They don’t even call him Astro Boy in this one. It was actually pretty solid, created by the same mangaka who made Monster he reimagined an arc from the og manga
>>154395640Not as successful as pokemon
>>154396564Exactly, you can’t exactly collect little half-naked boys can you?
>>154395811Casshern is such a weird series, and the legacy of the series is even sadder and weirder. I'd love to see it adapted as a beat-'em-up based on the original series or something, because anything outside of a cameo just ends up wrong.>The story of the robot oppression goes nowhere when you think about it for the original manga and series. Casshern and Astro Boy were from an age where anime and manga mostly just did villain of the week stories with no real overarching plot. Astro Boy didn't have any "robot oppression" story, it was a story about a boy robot that fights other robots and basically nothing else.>>154396491You're not wrong. Casshern is derived from Kamen Rider and Kikaider, and Ishinomori's was probably inspired by Atom.>>154396550It had some really good moments, but it really suffered from taking a fairly short and simple storyline and stretching it out to add complexity to it. You can skip the second half of the first episode and not really miss anything, which is pretty bad since the episode is an hour long.
The revamped show that came out around 2003-05 was really good and even had a solid video game to go with it. But what's the deal with this movie? Because everyone I ask that has seen it has nothing but glowing things to say. I saw it as a kid, and a couple times since then, and I dig the whole thing, I remember it being well received among friends and peers. Freddie Highmore was alright, did a downright good job considering he was only around 14. Nic Cage, Sam Jackson, Eugene Levy, fuckin' Bill Nighy. Sutherland, Tudyk, fuckin' Rico from Hannah Montana, it's a pretty cool cast lineup. I know it doesn't deliver exactly what everyone expects when they think Astro Boy, but the movie was good and could have been a springboard to some even better singles, or even usher in a new show set in its canon. Though that seems like the sort of think that would have been on Nickelodeon. I think it just got a bad rap for being an "anime inspired movie" before they were fully mainstream. Speed Racer was the year before and it wasn't terribly well received at the time, despite being the same sort of case where I know plenty of people who will talk about how great it was. Speed Racer is unironically a top tier flick for me, I end up watching it on my birthday every 2-3 years. Dragonball Evolution was less than a year prior as well, which I'm sure some of these armchair film reviewers couldn't help but think about and relate because anime. There's no doubt it's a bad Dragon Ball adaption, but I think it's perfectly fine for a cornball action movie targeted toward teenage boys. I had a girlfriend that made me watch through Shameless and ended up liking Jimmy-Steve and Fiona as Goku and Bulma. My point though is that Astro Boy just came out at the wrong time and had to fight 2000's anime movie stigma.
>>154396689At the very least you've gotten past just starting a thread with>Astro Boy (2009)The way you have been for the past few years.
>>154396645>You can skip the second half of the first episodeNot me. That was a pretty beautiful, heartbreaking short story to me even if it doesn’t connect that much to the main plot. Sometimes a detour is warranted don’t you think?
>>154396731I don't know what habitual poster you're talking about but you're experiencing delusions due to prolonged internet use. I've never brought up Astro Boy here.
>>154396645That was it, Kikaider. Thank you.And maybe a little Cyborg 009 along the way, just contributing some DNA.>>154396689everyone loves that speed racer movie, it must have just been a fun romp that didn't take itself seriously.>>154396813good lord, who told him he could shave? He already had a tiny face on a huge head, this is making it much worse.
>>154396832>good lord, who told him he could shave? He already had a tiny face on a huge head, this is making it much worse. That's from a Comedy Bang! Bang! from like 2012.
>>154396748There are 8 episodes, each an hour long. The second half of the first episode after establishing a murder mystery is not the time for a "detour". And not only does it not connect to the main plot at all, but it's incredibly predictable for an original story beat that wasn't from the original manga, so the entire time I was just waiting for it to be over. As soon as North #2 was introduced I knew exactly what was going to happen right up to him getting destroyed. Of the few Atom manga I've read none of them have been so boring and predictable as what they did with North #2 to the point he should have just been killed off screen to keep the story going.>>154396813There is either an autist that keeps habitually making threads about that shitty 2009 Astro Boy movie with threads that say almost nothing, or there's a corporate shill that makes threads about the old movie because the Astro Boy Reboot that's been in development hell for the past few years and seemingly creates a thread every time there's some news about it.
>>154396894Is it really that bad? The autist, I mean, how autistic can he be?
>>154395640It defined what "anime" was in the west for literal DECADES, what the fuck are you even talking about? It was relevant enough to be referenced by comic strips ffs.
>>154397094Did they even watch it? I think he just likes the cool designs.
>>154395640Atom/Pluto was just cooler and more badass.
>>154397127Yeah? It was a cheap cartoon that came on public tv, there wasn't much else to even watch outside maybe Speed Racer.
>>154395640He did, Osamu Tezuka is one of the few mangaka artists that normies actually like (Fujiko F Fujio is another one).>>154396295Speed Racer was so big Hanna Barbera retooled a segment from a canceled/rejected game show into Wacky Races just so they can have their answer to it, Japan ate it up because of it's simulates to Speed Racer.
Astroboy was too violent for "protect the children" parents, and too cerebral for "dats book lernin" parents. There were a few scenes in most of the adaptions of bumbling idiot parents, and racists didn't like the "robots as oppressed people" morals, so I'm sure a few parents wanted to feel personally insulted about being told to make logical choices.
>>154395640Astroboy did have a lot of cool robot designs. I think the market, the sort of things seen on cartoons, were geared towards giant robot battles. There's a reason why "the greatest robot in the world" is one of the best Astro stories, while other stories like Astroboy's brothers are forgotten.
>>154395640He didn't smoke like 8 man
>>154395640Yes, yes, well done, Astro Bog. Well done, Astro boy...HOWEVER
>>154395640Not American, that is about it, American ran in the Japan is the enemy mindset up to the mid 90s, even stuff like Animaniacs still had bits that felt like political cartoons from the war, hell even in the 2000s you had shows like attack of the show and Xplay were they would openly shit on Japanese games despite 90% of the games being Japanes.
>>154396550Liked the Manga better that the anime, the art in the manga makes Pluto feel like rage incarnate, the anime didn't translate that well into the screen.
>>154395811Astroboy is mostly episodic whi the wholw robo racism as the backdrop. Like how the X-Men never solve mutant racism either.
>>154396491>Point is, everything Atom has going for him, we've kind of moved on from, and expanded on, PLUS other things. Plus not feeling like it's the fucking 40s, y'know?Tezuka was already commenting on Atom being considered out of date in the 60's, it's nothing new.
There's two or three major factors"Firstly: It was in black and white. Color TV BOOMED in the mid 60's and TV became an arms race for colorful shows. Astro Boy's appeal to TV networks was as a cheap syndicated show, but once dozens of color alternatives popped up it basically threw it off syndication for years. Second, there wouldn't be another Astro Boy tv series until the 80's, by which time the US was gripped with a bunch of breakout toy tie-in shows. There's also some issues with the content of the JP shows needing to be censored, but even then there was just a lack of presence of the character in new media for decades at a time. It was ok in Japan because the anime was more an advertisement for the manga, which Tezuka continued to work on through those decades, but that wasn't happening in the US.
>>154396550Watched it for the first time a few months ago.It was alright. I think at times it's own slow pacing drags it down, and the predictability of the other Top Robots dying kind of takes away the stakes.I'd say it's like a solid 7/10.
>>154400298Expanded market, you can watch Astro Boy without knowing about the manga and still have a great time.Japan would've been MUCH better off banning ad shows like what the US did after the Hot Wheels fiasco but unlike the US KEEP the ban so only actual entertainment is allowed to be made.
>>154401523Does Pokemon count as an ad show?
>>154401523But that would've killed tokusatsu in its crib.
>>154395640Do this should be in >>>>/a/Well don't matter, i love the Japanese Cartoony style, my best example is Metropolis 2001.The Most Beautiful Decopunk i ever seen.https://ok.ru/video/10397954542318
>>154398568Who’s the obese librarian?
>>154395640>>>/a/
>>154403523Absofuckinglutely.
whatever happened to Prince Planet
Astroboy was fucking massive what the fuck are you talking about
The screenplay of the movie had a writer from Trading Places and Space Jam
>>154405422That's the angry mother of one of the classmates, yelling at school staff until she gets her way. I think it was ep 4 of the 1980s Astroboy.
so is the original astro boy manga worth reading like is there actual entertainment value in it besides being very influential
>Hey, Cora, did you bring me back something?>The perfect gift for a sweet little girl
>>154405855Yes. It's entertaining, but Tezuka has a certain outlook on humanity's destiny, and that humanity's flaws would prevent anything good- if no good actions were taken. It's cerebral in places.
>>154403523No, against Nintendo of Japan's policy.>>154405495Not the case, see above.
>>154406121Ok that’s pretty funny
>>154407453Few writers dare to discuss that when the modern era Loses Badly (alien invasion, resource wars, etc) and gets knocked back to the 1800's, people get ahold of things that makes them start losing fingers.
>>154403866Absolute kino btw
>>154398568It's fascinating how Americans treat violence when their country was founded on genocide and their economy is built around the militar complex. Going Jungian, it's a nation that can't see its shadow. And it's getting worse
>>154395640It's not good and American cartoons were better in every way at the time.
>>154408884
>>154408899unlike today.
