Suicide is a sin because if it was not, the most logical thing to do in Catholicism would be to go to a serious confession, confess all your sins, do the penance, and then immediately die. Gimmicky bullshit to get into heaven isn't allowed (obviously). Since the definition of a mortal sin is somebody knowing full well what they are doing is wrong, and do it anyways, one can argue that the mental state of a suicidal person is usually fucked in such a way that they DONT know what they're doing.
