The more I think about it the show has more in common with that one episode of Star Trek TNG where Worf, Riker and Data got trapped in a casino than it has with I have No Mouth, and I Must Scream. Both feature alien/artificial intelligences trying to maintain an environment suitable for human intelligences with flawed and incomplete information. Except instead of abstracting that one astronaut just died eventually and the program kept on running.

That's fair, I still think weak is better than off-theme. I enjoy the pilot's antics more than I enjoy ep7's sudden retarded hyper serious plot and the clear u-turn in direction into something completely different

To me ep5 is exactly the kind of filler adventure episodes that's just plain fun. I'd have wanted more of them for sure, but we didn't get more, so ep5 is one of the few we did get. You could argue each of those concepts deserved its own episode; I don't think they necessarily ALL did, but even if they did, it's not an argument I can take in criticism of ep5 because obviously the show simply didn't have the space for like 4-5 more adventure episodes (especially not with the all-important Jax plotline). I'm glad we at least got ep5 to see sneak peeks into a few different settings. Otherwise the episode is just the characters bouncing off each other and that's immensely enjoyable to me.
In fact I might even say that the fact there's no single big adventure with overarching stakes makes the character interactions take the focus even more than usual and I love it.
