Because of Toy Story 5 being out, I've been looking back on the prior films and I realized something that I have not seen anyone else discuss before. How does Woody even know what daycare is like? In the scene where the toys are in the donation box in the car, Woody tries to convince them that "Daycare is a place for washed up old toys who have no owner" and says that they will be begging to go back to Andy's later on.Of course he turned out to be completely right, but how did he even know this? It's not like he was ever there before. At that time the only owner Woody had ever had was Andy and maybe Andy's father before that.I guess you could argue he extrapolated that information about daycare, but it seems oddly specific that he'd know how bad it really was. Almost like he had been there before? Maybe he went with Andy when Andy was in daycare and just visited it? I don't know.
>>154467471Woody is an old toy he knows stuff. The real question is why he's so hung up on Andy when he should be Woody's like fourth or fifth kid at this point
Andy could have taken Woody with him to the daycare every day for years for all we know.
If you push the living toy conceit too hard it breaks; Woody is supposed to be experianced and knowledgable.
>>154467550This. Toy Story 4 only left more questions trying to explain how toys come alive.>>154467499Nothing implies Woody had a kid before Andy.
That's not a plot hole. A plot hole is a break in logic of the narrative, this can be handwaved away like what everyone else has said so far. Plus, it doesn't have any bearing on the story itself. Want to know a REAL plot hole? If Buzz has to spend all of TS1 realizing and coming to grips with the fact that he's a toy and not a space ranger, then why does he freeze up like a toy when there's people around?
>>154467730I always handwaved that in my mind as being something magically hardcoded into toys. Like akin to a triggered state of trance. I mean I partly only considered that because I liked the idea of Jessie in a trance but sure whatever Buzz too.
>>154467730If you're in a place you're totally unfamiliar with, then it's best to do what the natives do.
>>154467499Jesse and Bullseye are just as old as Woody and they were quite happy to go to daycare however
>>154467471Toys probably talk to each other and Woody has been around the block a few times.
>>154467471Lots of kids go to daycare. Doesn't seem implausible that Andy used to go daycare when he was little and had Woody with him. It's also possible Woody heard stories from other toys
>>154467822They were in storage
>>154467499He is an old toy but he might have been the first favorite toy since ever? So and andy probably went to daycare. Kids bring their favorites to daycare all the time.
>>154467822To be fair, for them, anything is better than the box.
>>154467779But Woody and all of Sid's toys are able to break the "trance" at the end of the movie.>>154467808But Buzz was in his "trance" when Andy first gets him as a present at the beginning of the movie.
>>154467499>The real question is why he's so hung up on Andy when he should be Woody's like fourth or fifth kid at this pointWoody knows the drill.>"Well, my kid grew up; time to head to the basement for a few years until Andy passes us down to his baby. If Andy is anything like his dad, we won't have to wait long." *wink*
>>154467621>Nothing implies Woody had a kid before Andy.Andy's mom calls him a family toy in 2, you filthy casual
>>154467730That is a good point actually.Other potential plotholes:>Toys can talk to other toys in close proximity to humans yet they cannot be heard (ie Buzz and Woody arguing under the car in TS1) but they can also be heard when the plot calls for it (Woody tricking Sid's sister in TS1, calling for Buster in TS2, Trixie pretending to be the GPS to trick Bonnie's dad in TS4, etc)>Toys say they need to breathe, or coughing despite not having lungs (Jessie claiming she can't breathe when she was in the trash bag in TS3, multiple instances of Woody coughing due to dust, etc)>Buzz breaking his arm in TS1 after falling like 10 or 11 feet but being completely unharmed in TS4 after getting hit by a carnival ride>Toys aren't melted by the incinerator in TS3 despite being made of plastic>Toys are able to wash themselves off and look pristine in TS3 despite Jessie having literal paint in her yarn hair>>154467621This is never established for some reason. Forky came alive shortly after Bonnie made him, but Buzz only seemed to come alive, or at keast activated, after coming out of the box. Gravity Belt Buzz and Zurg don't seem to activate until being disturbed in TS2, yet the Prospector Stinky Pete says he was in his box for decades despite never coming out and described watching the shelf and hating kids for never choosing him, so he was active while in the box. So do they come alive in the factory? In the box? After they've been played with? I don't know.
>>154467730Woody talks about "breaking rules" before he and the damaged toys openly move and speak in front of Sid. Where did the rules come from? Who knows?
>>154468372God
>>154467471that's not what a plot hole is. like at all. that is mere information. Information that could have easily been learnt from other toys, prior experience or fuck...putting the pieces together on his own? This is an example of an actual Plot Hole: In the very overrated Gundam 0080 War in the Pocket, Al (the child protagonist of the story) isn't even the first kid in his group of friends to see Bernie's Zaku crash land in the "forest" inside the bog standard O'Neil Cylinder style space colony, where literally EVERYBODY inside could easily have (and literally did) see a 20 meter tall nuclear powered football player flying around where a actual Mobile Suit battle just happened (which breaks out inside the colony because...?) ...yet Al is the only person that goes and meets Bernie and his Zaku remains undiscovered and completely unbothered. It makes no goddamn sense and it's the crux of the entire OVA.
>>154468047In the case for the Buzzes and maybe Zurg, belt-Buzz says that they're in hypersleep, so it makes sense for them not to be "awake" until they get out of the box.
>>154467471one could ask that about any and all knowledge the toys havewe weren't given enough information because it simply isn't a well-crafted setting. Henson beat them the fuck out a fucking decade prior.
>>154467779it would be funny if it actually happened to them involuntarily, so they were in midsentence, a kid snuck up on them, and they just fell over. kid walks by, they get back up "dammit we need to go somewhere more private">>154468719bystander effect is particularly strong in japan
>>154468755Yeah it's kind of implied that the rise of ee-lectronic toys has muddled the magic a little. Toys can literally talk and move now on their own, so the magic gets sort of confused on how much of that it needs to fill in for.
>>154468719>which breaks out inside the colony because...?Because the Zekes were trying to find and destroy the Gundam prototype that the Feds were hiding there.
I really dislike that the entire plot of TS3 is kicked off because of a misunderstanding
it's a kids cartoon, man. who cares about the lore of woody's knowledge of daycares. it's like the rules in Toy Story 1. We don't need Toy Story 6 to have some Toy Rule King show up and explain everything.
>>154467471>Woody tries to convince them that "Daycare is a place for washed up old toys who have no owner" and says that they will be begging to go back to Andy's later on.>Of course he turned out to be completely right, but how did he even know this?He was exaggerating because he was upset and wanted to make the others, who were excited, feel like they had made the wrong choice.
Andy may have gone to daycare when he was younger, and he may have taken Woody with him, where Woody could meet and speak with toys who live and stay at the daycare.
>>154467471Woody didn't need personal experience for this. He's the leader of all the toys in Andy's room, and Andy had all sorts of toys, and it's very unlikely all of them would have been store new when Andy got them. All it would take to explain Woody's conviction in this, is one(1) single toy that Andy had previously having been in a daycare before ending up in Andy's room, and Woody trusting that toy's recollection of what daycare is like. Then of course you could argue that that would be just one toy from probably a different daycare decades ago, but since daycares likely swap inventory every now and again with eachother (at least it happens where I live), the one toy who had been to daycare would probably know from reputation and/or experience that daycares all tend to work the same.
>>154467991ThisAl from als toy barn had to distract Andy's mom with a skateboard to get him lmaoThat nigga al was funny
>>154467730Instinctual, but from Buzz's PoV rationalized as a survival technique taught in the academy
>>154467471Andy had probably brought him to daycare at some point.
