Finished backpropagation (in its current state). All in all I don't like it.The first half was cheesy and fun - basically everything up till the "stress test" with the memory sphere. Even after that, it was still on track; stuff like the Toon Town Destruction is not in my favourite moments or anything but it wasn't bad either, and the direction seemed fine.And then it goes off the rails entirely. It's just blatantly obvious that the guy has never planned a large-scale plot before, and just writes whatever the fuck his pen says without regard for the overall structure and pacing and direction. You know what they say: perfection is achieved not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away; and by goodness Fish just kept adding and adding and adding and adding.A flashback is inherently narratively weak; its purpose is to serve the present day story, not to be a story in itself. The guy really should've just written a separate prequel about Ribbit and Dotty and shit rather than writing a story-within-a-story but framed as a flashback while the reader is just waiting to get back to the present already. I already complained about it a couple of threads ago, but it just kept fucking going after I posted there. And going and going.What comes after is even worse though. Pomni resisting abstraction makes perfect sense thematically and in terms of character; Jax doing the same feels like an asspull. Then the entire fortress segment just felt hilariously out of place. It felt like the author just decided to pile on stakes upon stakes upon stakes, more more more, always something bad, always a bigger challenge, invent all kinds of random bullshit to make it as hard as possible for Pomni and Jax to reunite; but it just got really silly after a while. The fortress was silly, the retarded death games were silly, Ringmaster Jax was silly. And with the story just pushing on the gas non-stop,

I was earnestly expecting a heart-to-heart moment where Pomni comes back from being "lost" and then Pomni can use everything she saw to break through to him, while he's dealing with the combined effects of both reuniting with Pomni that was lost and suddenly knowing she's seen all his life.But instead Caine just blurts it out and lol we get wacky inflatable screaming fortress adventure haha. Then they finally meet each other and it's just the same old song and dance of "noo I care about you" "no pomni don't I don't deserve it" "oh but I will jaxxy boy come here" "nooo pomni you'll destroy yourself" and then they hold hands and go back home.

The show's issues come from Goose not being able to pace the build-up to it properly in the preceeding episodes, resulting in a lot of people falling in love with the show for completely unrelated reasons, and then the jarring transition to the self-insert suicide drama taking people off-guard. People didn't expect it to veer into that direction and didn't want it to do so, but that was Goose's original vision from the start and he had to force it one way or another. Making the show longer could've fixed it by giving more time for the build-up.Backprop instead suffers from an amateur fanfiction author not having a solid plan for the entire fic, and not having the experience of pacing a long-form novel, and serial publishing making it impossible to gain an overview and edit the work as a whole. Effectively the direction changed mid-way, again not living up to the initial expectations it set by moving into a completely different track; but this time caused not by too-rigid planning forcing an unnatural ending, but by complete lack of planning allowing the story to spiral out of control. And where the show was too short and lacked space to develop its plot, Backprop is way too long as a result of letting its plot just wander off completely free into massive tangents.I hope this makes sense.Oh and one more difference however is that in the end, backprop still comes back to its funnybunny romance. The pacing is terrible and the tone is different but its core idea is still in there. The show, however, irrecovably veers from "comfy adventures in the freaky circus" to "Jax trauma show" and completely switches gears, there's no trace of the original plot at the end.
