In that scenario, fans are prepared to see some wild, out there stuff as a one-off. Conversely, the off-model hate boner comes from fans getting surprised and bamboozled during casual searches. They go out looking for art of a character they like, looking how they like, only to stumble across what might as well be OCs sometimes. Now, going off-model doesn't have to be inherently bad, but it is a crapshoot. I know I'm probably gonna like Bulma art if she's drawn in Toriyama's style, because I like Toriyama's Bulma. I don't know if I'll like art of her drawn in someone else's style, because I might not like that style or feel it complements her well.
