Aside from the Warners and Pinky & The Brain, were any of the other members of the ensemble that good?

I always found Goodfeathers to be boring/annoying cause it was the same joke every time. Rita and Runt were just an excuse for a music number. Hippos were pure garbage. Buttons and Mindy was okay at best. I liked Chicken Boo, I guess.
>>
>>154490783
Slappy and Skippy Squirrel were alright.
>>
>>154490804
Fair, that's fair and I always wanted to fuck Skippy
>>
>>154490830
SLAPPY! I ALWAYS WANTED TO FUCK SLAPPY!
>>
>>154490783
Katie Kaboom is really relatable if you grown up with several teenager sisters. Especially when they were on the rag.
>>
>>154490845
Always got pissed off that my parents seldom tried to reign in my sister's bitchiness while growing up.

I don't think there were that many Katie Kaboom segments though?
>>
>>154490783
Slappy is top tier right up there with the Warners
I always have a fondness for Rita/Runt
Goodfeathers are funny
>>
>>154490783
Slappy Squirrel is generally regarded to have rounded out the "Big 3" acts from the show. I always liked Good Idea Bad Idea too.

I meant to say Slappy! SLAPPY!

Me too anon skippy was a cute

you might be the first person i've ever seen say that they liked katie kaboom

I think the general consensus is...
>Warners and P&B
>Slappy
>Goodfeathers
>Rita and Runt
>Chicken Boo
>Minerva (mostly on her looks)
>Buttons and Mindy
>Hip Hippos
>Katie Ka-Boom

I feel like people shitting on Animaniacs on Tiny Toons in recent years are people born after they ended and just watched random reviewers. Did nobody ever know the concept of a variety show?

I always hated Buttons and Mindy the worst out of any of these shorts. The whole "Pet/Sibling/Teacher/Babysitter/etc. tried to keep child out of trouble but they get into trouble anyway and the caretaker gets punished for it" trope is just tired and unpleasant - not because it's mean spirited but because it's the same shit every time and extremely played outa and unsatisfying. It's not fun to watch and there's no point rooting for the hero because they will always fail.

Chicken Boo is the same shit every time too but I always liked him just because of the absurdity of the whole gag.

More than alright! Slappy is the best. and Skippy was hilarious and adorable.
>>154490783
seriously, their scattergun approach really didn't work consistently.
>Goodfeathers
I get it. I get the joke. The purple one is on his period. Can we move on?
>Rita and Runt
amazing the first time you hear it, annoyingly earwormy after each time. Zero interest for kids
>Hippos
I feel like we were supposed to hate them, and it worked too well
>Buttons and Mindy
like... funny two or three times.
>Chicken Boo
I'm a sucker for this stupid running gag, but what they should have done is made him a background guy in OTHER cartoons, not having his own. Because he's not a character
it's funny, they figured out pretty quickly that Katie Ka-boom was a one-note joke, but the others they didn't. and at least Katie was a cutie.
At least we have Minerva.
>>154491044
oh yeah all the little "and now we present" segments were amazing. Randy Beaman kid is just fantastic.

I mean
variety shows were already corny and oldfashioned by 90s kids' PARENTS' standards. But that's kind of the point.

the point is Mindy loves him, and you do what's right regardless of the reward you'll get.

>>
>>154496120
exactly
i'm not much of a wacky hijinx guy, which is unfortunate because that makes it really hard to rewatch Taz-Mania and enjoy it, and I WANT to do that.. i love so many of the jokes, I just can't sit through a bunch of "an orchestra is playing notes that match the action of what's going on right now, isn't that INCREDIBLE?" zany cartoonery.. Not at my age. Not saying once in a while you shouldn't do something like that, but..
>>
>>154490783
I liked Rita and Runt, but solely because their theme song has been stuck in my head since I first heard it.

Freakazoid was it's own thing, but Animaniacs hijacked the OP once for a gag.
>>
>>154497980
plus that one time Wakko showed up to steal a scene and said 'Steven loves it when we do these'

then the Brain wanders by, insisting it's HIS cerebral show that is Steven's favorite. so they all go to see him and ask
>>
>>154498162
>Steven: Who are you people?
>>
>>154490783
The problem is that half the sketches are just one joke repeated over and over and over again.
>Chicken Boo is just one gag
>Katey Kaboom is just one scenario repeated every single time with no changes at all
>Minerva Mink again just one joke, every animal drools after her while she ignores them
>Buttons and Mindy is another fairly old joke with the guy chasing the unaware baby, been done since the 40s with Popeye
>Hip hippos is one joke, they're fat and stomp things

Rita and Runt was really hit or miss, I think they were more about the songs than anything else. They did not have a strong hook, it was just stray pets wandering into wacky cartoon situations.

Slappy works pretty well, there is a lot that can be done with an aging comedy former cartoon actor

Pinky and the Brain works, they can be in any situation as long as it's about taking over the world

Goodfeathers has less of a hook, seems like it's just about movie parodies. It's also hit or miss.
>>
>>154490994
>>154498572
>>154496952
Of all the sketches, they seemed the most out of place to me. They had a more friendly sincere kind of sketch that would be more at place in a Disney cartoon. Even the premise, pets that just want to find a home and be loved, but get into misadventures, sounds more disney-centric than the typical hammers and anvils Warner cartoon.
>>
>>154496919
Taz-Mania seemed kind of like Tiny Toons to me, in that it did get better over time. The early episodes were awful but it got better as the writers actually started to try a little more.
>>
>this was the last time they tried to make new stars instead of dragging out the carcasses of 80 year old characters
Even if you for some reason don't like the other characters it's a hell of a lot more interesting than "Bugs and Daffy and all the gang are back for the first time in five years!"
I feel like if the original directors were still alive they'd both be really weird looking and would be making new characters alongside the regular characters, but I suppose that's expecting too much of Warner Bros Animation
What was the last WBA cartoon that wasn't an adaptation of a DC series or established character? Da Boom Crew? Coconut Fred?
>>
>>154497482
Freakazoid was more of a project by the Batman team since they all started out on Tiny Toons and wanted to do some comedy too.
>>
>>154498639
I felt the same, especially after when Warner went right back to just using Looney tunes characters in all their shows again. It was all Baby Looney tunes, Looney Tunes show, Duck Dogers, no more original character shows.

As soon as WB turned into CW, they never wanted to make another original cartoon again.
>>
>>154490783
I liked Good Idea Bad Idea and Mime Time. They were exactly as long as they needed to be.
Pinky and the Brain is just great. Brain is one of the best voice performances in cartoons, and Pinky was never too annoying. The best ones have a classic story structure and rhythm that the reboot never understood.
Rita and Runt benefits a lot from Peters' singing, and one particular episode was gorgeously animated. It carried them.
On the other end of the spectrum, I hated Hip Hippos. It feels like it's all a big coastal in-joke, and it's just not for me.
>>
>>154498234
god bless Frank Welker.
>>154498572
>they're fat and stomp things
you forgot 'they're eurotrash snobs and massively out of touch"
not saying that helps, but it IS a trait.
>>154498621
True. Rita's sarcastic edge and Runt's hilarious dopeyness are the only thing making them fit.
>>154498634
maybe I should give it another rewatch try.
>>
>>154498639
I mean, CN counts as Warner.
>>154498653
at first it was going to be just a mildly silly superhero show, but then they realized it was smart to go FULL wacky, because Road Rovers just didn't work. You can't expect us to care about the action when it's that flaccid and comedy-based.
>>
>>154498621
>sounds more disney-centric than the typical hammers and anvils Warner cartoon.
I think that's it, Rita and Runt do seem way too different than all the other parts of the show. But it's not half as violent or wacky as everything else too. Rita never stops an antagonist by slamming a giant mallet into anyone's head. They usually just sort of run away while singing. It is incredibly Disney-coded of them. Since they rarely ever actually hurt anyone.
>>
>>154490783
Slappy generally good, strong concept. Goodfeathers are amusing enough but they do reuse at least two staple gags most times. The musical ep was great though.
>>
>>154498572
>Minerva Mink again just one joke, every animal drools after her while she ignores them
hey hey, there's the other half of the joke where SHE drools after the other hunk werewolf thing

I'm one of those fucking freaks that actually liked Minerva's shorts as a premise and not just because of her looks, and felt like they probably had more planned for her but never got the chance to show it because they stopped making her shorts after just two segments. The comics basically confirm that where she's fleshed out a lot more and it turned out she was kind of a nerd that had a love for awful puns. It's also been confirmed that she and Slappy were supposed to have a sort of adoptive mother/daughter relationship that they never got to explore. Honestly feel kind of bad that her character's just thought of as fapbait.

I really do wish we got more Minerva stuff animated as well. Her being fond of shitty puns is great, could play to her WANTING to be funny, but most guys just meet her at a surface lever, something she is also guilty of as well.
>>
>>154501560
She is also basically the same character as Hello Nurse, but in longer segments. Nurse works as a quick gag in other shorts since she shows up and random guys make the same 1940s wolf reactions a few times and then it's back to the episode.

Minerva shorts are just 8 minutes of that same joke repeated again and again. There is just not a whole lot that can be done with that. She does something out in the woods and a hunter, or a wolf, or some kind of typical cartoon predator cannot stop drooling over her that their own traps are sprung on them. There is not a lot of storytelling that can be done here. Unless they want to do the Mindy and Buttons thing and change up the setting for variety like the stone age, outer space, and mermaid episodes.
>>
>>154490783
I thought the reboot really missed out on being able to adapt Goodfeathers shorts with newer stuff like Sopranos and Breaking Bad.

The feathers having to deal with a Tony Soprano type like a Tony Pigeooni and Walter Wren that makes counterfeit bird seed in a trailer out in the desert.

Comics were not made by the same people, there is no believing that a comic direction was the same thing as what the cartoon writers wanted or planned at all.

What nobody wants to admit about Animaniacs is that huge swaths of it aren't good and aren't funny, INCLUDING a ton of segments with the Warners.

Pinky & the Brain hard-carry a lot of episodes, and you can tell they figured this out eventually too because they're the ones who got a spinoff.

Meanwhile there were an awful lot of clunkers and one-note gags. Goodfeathers is an ENTIRE segment devoted to a SINGLE movie. And they didn't even do as much with it as they could. Like, there was never a funny pigeon version of Tommy getting whacked.
>>
>>154505140
It's just nostalgia. The show was fine and fondly remembered by a lot of older people because it had dirty jokes every now and again, but at the end of the day Animaniacs is almost entirely the kind of tedious pop culture and political reference that people here shit on constantly nonstop in its modern form. The only difference is that we're supposed to think Animaniacs is based because it was the same five jokes about Bill Clinton and The Godfather instead of the same five jokes about Trump and Breaking Bad.

Like you said, the saving grace was Pinky and the Brain, as well as the occasional decent short. Usually featuring the Warners or Slappy - but even then the Warners were some of the worst offenders with generic pop culture and political jokes that make it age like total milk as anything besides a time capsule. It was popular because there was nothing else like it, but classic Animaniacs is no better than the reboot save for Slappy being present and the animation being better.
>>
>>154505129
yeah that really works. She should just be a smoking hot dork. like somehow the nerdest nerd around got saddled with supermodel looks. a cruel cosmic joke.
>>154505140
It's true. I wish it wasn't. Still, it's pretty decent to rewatch. Bad segments are always over quickly, so
>>154506005
hey those political references are still amazing. fuckin Boris Yeltzin man. Fucker was drunk off his ass. And the difference between making fun of clinton and trump is one of them was ostensibly a respected public figure, and the other, an actor hired to make "his side" look bad, to profit from the media coverage of it.

Kind of hate how the vast majority of Slappy art is human Slappy there's gotta be more real deal Slappy
>>
>>154506200
The tricky part is, how do you draw Slappy so she's no longer in looney tunes style, but is still not overly cute because she needs to look cranky and old. That motif just doesn't exist in better art styles. Show me how you'd draw like, a Rats of Nimh Slappy and I will draw one myself in that style.
