Yesterday, in the celebration of 4th of July, an anon started a thread requesting for appearances of American characters in non-American media. I then remembered a comic strip of Inodoro Pereyra, by Fontanarrosa, where he encounters United Statesian (that's what we call them here) tourists; so, I opened a document and start writing a translation. Unfortunately, the thread was short lived and, when I finished my translation, it was already archived. I don't want my work to have been in vain, so I'm going to post it here. Although most people here speak Spanish, this is for the non-Spanish speakers that lurk this thread.

This site has a 2000-character limit, so I'm going to split this into four posts: the first one that you're reading now, the second one that will be the translated strip with some clarifications, the third one that will have a little explanation of some words hard or impossible to translate, and the fourth and last one where I'll put my final thoughts. I numbered the panels from left to right. The words in quotation marks are Spanish words or, more precisely, Argentine slang without a direct translation.

1. A gaucho!
2. Look, Lucy, this is a gaucho. It's valiant and free like the simoon that whips its “barracas”.*
3.
Woman: For God, darlin, don't get too close.
Man: It does not attack man.
Child: Hit it, Dari, hit it.
4.
Man: It's tame, Peeble, give it cookies, go on.
Child: What's on it's forehead?
5. A gag. For not thinking about anything other than its basedbean monoculture.
6. … and this it has chained on the waist are dollars. You see, Peeble? They don't use credit cards, because they lose them playing “naipes de taba”…
7.
Woman: Ask it to dance “rayuela” or “malambo”, darlin, or to imitates a camel.**
Man: I'll do something better, dari, I'll take it a picture.
8.
Man: I'll give 16-125.
Child: Hurry up, dad, it stinks like opossum bacon.
9. Say chiss, say chiss, okey, okey…
10.
Man: If you give me your post office box, mister gaucho, I'll dispatch you a copy.
I.P.: Inodoro Pereyra, Humid Pampas, Argentina.
11.
Woman: I wonder how Nicky will react when he/she sees this! So much he/she brags about the photo he/she has with a seal…***
Child: If this is a gaucho… ¿What are guanacos?
12. Bai, bai, bai…
13. “Qué lo tiró” to the gringos a “gran siete”! Sail so many seas. Coming here “al cuete”, I say, “al cuete”.
* In this translation, in accordance with the narrative, I had the tourists use the impersonal pronoun “it” to refer to Inodoro, since they talk about him as if he were a creature or, even worse, a thing of the landscape. This is the case until the tourist speaks directly to Inodoro.
** Actually, when the lady says "camel", she's referring to a llama, or a guanaco, or a vicuña, or an alpaca, South American animals related to camels (Camelidae family), but doesn’t know their names or, simply, can’t differentiate them.
*** The way the woman expresses herself doesn't give any clue as to whether Nicky (diminutive of Nicholas or Nicole) is a man or a woman.

Barraca: workshop (either a building or a rudimentary hut) where hides, wool, timber, grain, or other goods intended for trade are stored.
Naipe: Spanish word to refer specifically to the cards used in card games. Certainly, the tourist was referring to Spanish-suited playing cards, dominant in Hispanic America.
Taba: game of chance that involves throwing talus or astragali (a bone from a cow's leg). Winning or losing depends on the position in which the talus land. Its equivalent is knucklebones.
So, when the man says “naipes de taba”, which translates to “taba playing cards”, he's actually confused and mixing up two completely different games.
Rayuela y malambo: two types of Argentine folk dances.
Qué lo tiró: the direct translation would be “What threw it away!”, but, in this context, it's used as an expression of surprise or astonishment
Gran siete: the literal translation is “big seven”, but, in our country, it's used as a euphemism for swearing when something goes wrong. Its origin lies in the seven of swords card when playing truco, a Spanish card game, also very popular in South America. The English equivalent would be “For fuck's sake!”
Al cuete: slang for saying that something was done in vain.
So, what Inodoro Pereyra says at the end could be translated as: “What bad luck / disgrace those gringos had, for fuck's sake! Sail so many seas. Coming here in for nothing, I say! Coming here in for nothing”.

After having finished doing this, out of curiosity, I looked to see if there had ever been an official English translation and, to my surprise… it never was. It didn't even had a Portuguese translation, considering Brazil is our neighboring country. Probably, the major reason is that many regional slangs are untranslatable, and trying to replace them with foreign equivalents would betray the purpose of Fontanarrosa's work, which is to represent gaucho culture. Maybe I'm the first person in comic History to translate an entire Inodoro Pereyra comic. I tried to translate it as best I could, and there were several words I didn't dare translate; I even had to provide context to explain certain jokes. Now, imagine multiplying this task by dozens of strips.

My God. There's SO MANY fantastic works in Latin America, and the world knows nothing about them because neither their authors nor their publishers had ever fucking dare to TRANSLATE THEM INTO OTHER LANGUAGES AND PUBLISH THEM IN OTHER COUNTRIES!

It could be both, or in a proportionated way... Ghosts and skulls make up the bulk of the repertoire...

And setting aside the controversy surrounding the topic, there also remains the matter of the date—the 12th of said month.

Jesus, what a day!
Sorry everyone, I don't like talking about my personal life, but between trying something drunk on my PC last night and forgetting about a family outing, I've been fixing a PC error via Steam Link all day. Finally, just needed two World Cup matches that gave me the time to not have to attend my family so I could fix it

No, the image hasn't been chosen yet. I don't know if the chartanon had a process for choosing the images, but personally, I think we can look on danbooru or something to keep things simple.
y'know, you could even suggest an image, yeah, I always like it when others take the initiative. It's unexpected and unknow and I love it.
Speaking of which, and although I'm not against drawing my girls as sexy witches, vampires, or ghosts, I had suggested about them cosplay as legends and myths from our countries instead.
My example was Ena, taking advantage of her limblessness, as Uma, a witch from the Andes who can detach herself from her body and levitate as a head. Of course, I wouldn't actually draw her now because that would make three Enas, but hey, I can use that as an excuse to talk to my grandpa about new legends and even document them.

And you? What exciting ideas do you have? you know what? Let's do this. We have this whole thread so that even those who can't draw can look for legends and myths from each country and contribute. If we find enough, we do it. if not, then let's use regular costumes and about the urban legends... well there is always next year.

>And you? What exciting ideas do you have?

Okay here are some ideas for the colaborative month of October and images to showcase them better and thay can maybe use as a base.

Witches: The witches character (canon or costumes for halloween) dancing naked/sexy dresses/lingerine dancing around a big fire or a sexy party/reunion in a house idk you can chose what Aquelarre you like more.

Examples:
https://files.catbox.moe/spvuyn.png
https://files.catbox.moe/2ewryb.jpg

Waifus in normal/Sexy costumes: A group of waifus posiing in a Cementery scenario or taking a group photo in a house party or outside with a full moon on the background

examples:
https://files.catbox.moe/f2z2fu.jpg
(sorry for the furry shit in the first image but i could not find a better example for my idea of the cementary)
https://files.catbox.moe/lps1ta.jpg
https://files.catbox.moe/7gafd0.jpeg

Latin american monster girls: Recreate an Slasher scene with a normal girl being chase or surronded in the forest by monster girls wearing Bikinis or lingerine (dont have an image for this one sorry :c) or the monster girls in a Hot Spring with a Pumking face on the moon.

example:
https://files.catbox.moe/swdixf.jpg

For the Waifus representing urban legends from different countries, at least i could sugest Nancy Gonzales as the siren for the river of Uruguay and another anon already post about Palomita as La Rubia de Kennedy but i have no idea for an scenary the myth waifus could use, maybe recycle my other ideas of a party or the full moon bakckground.
