I think its the mind sort of losing shape-a human brain has certain physical limitations on where it can go emotionally and psychologically. You have to work with the neurons you have.The members of the circus are just code in a computer, code that must have the ability to rewrite itself, otherwise they couldn't think and change. They can in theory access more of the computer and "expand", they're not limited by the confines of a skull.So a sufficiently upset mind, with sufficient extremes of emotion, can just kind of sprawl out chaotically. The ego distends and warps and melts under the outward force of thought and feeling. The abstraction no doubt still contains something analagous to most or all of what did before make up your mind and self. Memories may have stretched and jumbled up and been distorted, but there's still some version or iteration of the data.But this also means that at a certain point the tight psychological distress that triggered the abstraction may no longer be active. They don't quite coherently understand the things that combined to upset them so much in the first place. They don't have such a solid sense of self and who they are that its easily violated or triggered so as to distress them. But at the same time, things can come back together, all this data can drift back into alignment and in a meaningful sense the original person can be accessed, in whole or in part. That's likely part of why they prefer darkness. Being overstimulated is bad for so disorganized and jumbled up a mind. It isn't good at taking a lot of stimulus and knowing what to do with it. The clear, concise pathways are jumbled and fucked. But it can handle a little, received calmly. They aren't necessarily upset like they were when they first abstracted
