Why did DC try to recreate the Fantastic Four with The Terrifics?
>>154604538They didn't. You're thinking of Doom Patrol.
>>154604538Because why not? They made a bunch of Marvel expies during that era, the only ones that kinda stuck were Sideways and the Terrifics.Sideways because his power is kinda unique and he's a Spidey expy, and the Terrifics because they were the only already existing characters.
>>154604538>Fantastic four expies>not the doom patrolAre you stupid or something?
>>154604538Because Marvel decided not to publish a Fantastic Four title for a while
>>154604606I’d get my head blown clean off for saying this but sideways is kinda more interesting than spidey
>>154604577Wasn’t it also the challengers of the unknown
>>154604538This was part of a bunch of titles DC put out that were Marvel expies. Sideways was Spider-Man, Damage was Hulk, Brimstone was Ghost Rider, and I think Silencer was kind of Punisher? It was pretty ballsy but the timing was the best since Marvel was struggling at that point. Shame they all failed at various times but they were fun.
>>154605157he had potential, wish we could have gotten more of him.
>>154604538I don't know, but it was a great run
>>154605248They were all supposed to be the superheroes of the near future, right? It was a cool concept, but none of them really landed with me, especially black Batman. That was just some hacky shit
>why did DC try to copy something that hasn't been relevant in decadesbecause they're stupid
>>154604538Long standing tradition of Marvel and DC ripping each other off.
Right after Secret Wars, Marvel wasn't publishing a Fantastic Four title. Johnny and Ben were around, and Doom was posing as Iron Man, but the Reed and Sue were missing along with their kids and the rest of the Future Foundation. Many fans thought this was due to lame movie rights bullshit like the attempt to replace mutants with Inhumans a few years prior. DC was trying to capitalize on their rival's misstep. I think they did a decent job, considering it was a team of C-listers (and below) that lasted 30 issues.
>>154605316You're confusing it with 5G/Future State
>>154604538Marvel and DC have been ripping each other off for 60 years. DC's New Age of Heroes is just the most recent example of it happening.
>>154604538Crap like that is tradition between the big 2 and admittedly fun sometimes
>>154605176>Wasn’t it also the challengers of the unknownno, Fantastic Four were the ripoffs of them. it goesChallengers -> Fantastic Four -> Doom Patrol -> X-Menthe cycle of intellectual property theft. slightly offset by 3 out of 4 of them being Kirby creations anyway
>>154605876>Crap like that is tradition between the big 2a-are you saying the Champions of Angor aren't a wholly original creation?!
>>154604606>>154605157>>154605282I liked the art of Sideways, but the writing is total crap.
>>154604538The big two rip each other off all the time.Didio tried multiple times to make Ultimate for DC with All Star, Earth One, and then new 52. And then marvel ripped off Earth One OGNs by doing Season One OGNs and in general ripped off DC with their OGN line that started in 2013 after DC did a big push for OGNs starting in 2009/2010 (NTT: Games, Get Jiro, Batman Noel, Jonah Hex: No Way Back, etc). And DC finally succeeded with getting their Ultimate in Absolute and now Marvel is trying to rip off Absolute with Midnight.
>>154604538Lol I dunno
>>154604538That was the bit.Pretty much the whole line was analogous to different Marvel stuff.Fuck, Java became Doctor Doom
>>154604538It was literally at a time when the OG Fantastic Four was disbanded.Reed, Sue, Franklin, Valeria, and the Future Foundation kids were exploring space and timeJohnny was part of the Avengers and InhumansBen was on the GotG
>>154604538Cause marvel was not publishing one
>>154604538They should bring them back
>>154604538I worked at the DC Burbank office at the time and actually asked Dan Didio this, and also why they were ripping off Hulk with Damage and Spider-Man with that guy whose name I forgot. He said, and I quote 'because it's funny', then he laughed and walked away.Take from that anecdotal experience what you will. A VP told me the same thing when I asked him. He said sometimes they like to mess with Marvel because they think it's funny. I don't think any more thought was put in to it than that. These same idiots gave Gerard Way his own imprint and let him write Milk Wars.
>>154604538Because Dissney hates marvel comics.
>>154610275No. No, they shouldn't..
>>154605402That whole feud was so petty, and a big proof of how Marvel doesn't see itself as a comic company anymore. It was good on DC's part to make their play, how the fuck do you pretend the FF just don't exist.
>>154604538Wasn't that the whole point of Dark Matter?Terrifics = FF SCIENCE FICTIONChallengers = FF science fictionUnexpected = DefendersImmortal Men = X-MenDamage = HulkSideways = SpideyBrimstone = Ghost RiderSilencer = Black Widow
>>154611048>Dissney Not how it's spelt.
>>154604538Fantastic 4 didnt have an ongoing at the time so DC decided to be a little cheeky.
>>154611829I think they should, because it can’t all revolve around the Justice League brother it just can’t. >Justice League Red>Justice League Dark>Justice League tranny editionI can’t take it anymore. I’m starving for some variety. They could add Hawkgirl and Guy Gardener so it’s not a complete ripoff of FF, but I need it
>the fantastic 4I made the mistake of reading the wiki about Kang the conquerorHe's an alternate version of Reed Richards' father? The fuck is going on with marvel writing.
>>154612814>He's an alternate version of Reed Richards' father?Only sometimes.
>>154612814Keep in mind that in Kang's very first appearance, before he was ever Kang, the Fantastic Four speculated that he could actually be Doctor Doom. And in his second appearance, he met Doom and they both thought that they could be the past or future version of the other, even though that makes zero sense.
>>154604538It's not like Marvel was doing a damn thing with the FF for slightly over a decade at the time. They were one of the many sidelined classic teams that Marvel stopped giving a fuck about in the 00s.
>>154604538Marvel wasn't publishing FF books at the time, so I guess DC thought, why not
>>154604538I thought this worked except Metamorpho, he was not a great Ben Grimm. They also didn't really have the whole family thing at all either since they were basically stuck with each other. I'm not sure how to do that with this group, and it's hard to see many women putting up with Mr Terrific's shit for too long.
>>154604538Not like Marvel's been reserved in using the Squadron Supreme.
>>154604538I liked it when Starlin made a DC Guardians of the Galaxy.Made from some long LONG forgotten C-Listers, they were based in a metropolitan space station, had their own psychic talking dog, and fought their own Not-Thanos.
>>154612814Kang is a descendant of Nathaniel Richards, Reed's father, not Reed himself. Nathaniel spent decades banging multiple women throught the multiverse.
>>154613392Metamorpho was always kind of a mix between Reed, Ben, and Johnny.
>>154604538It was a fun concept but overall didn't really work when they were a bunch of unrelated angsty loners that never liked having to be around each other.
>>154614292Also the wacky goofy kids of the team Plastic Man and Metamotrpho were the oldest ones there with families and kids of their own. Power-wise they make up a good enough DC Fantastic Four, but their personalities are near total opposite of what was needed. A DC FF book really needs to start with a hero family and maybe pick up 1-2 others as additions. Like Hawkman/Hawkgirl or Jade/Obsidian, Maybe the Allen twins, or the Johnny/Jessie Quick.
>>154605248>Damage was HulkI hate how they ruined my boy by going full literal with that.
>>154604538does this all boil down to Carmine Infantino being fucking stupid as usual
>>154604606>>154605248I know these titles were well regarded, but the idea of DC doing these expies with characters not made for it and less iconic than the Marvel versions just seems really lame.
>>154610323>These same idiots gave Gerard Way his own imprint and let him write Milk Wars.Gerard Way actually does good comics and while YA wasn't perfect it was a solid idea, get the whole idea of giving a celebrity his own imprint seems like preferential treatment, but it wasn't without some good results.
>>154614732>Carmine Infantino being fucking stupid as usualCarmine did a lot of great stuff for DC though(some dubious, but that's always a give and take), this seems bizarre to hate on him for something DC did 40 years after he had any say in the company and almost a 5 years after he died. do you have some mad on for him?
>>154610323>He said, and I quote 'because it's funny', then he laughed and walked away.Yeah, that fits.
>>154604538>>154604577>>154605176You're all wrong because Marvel had already publicly and legally admitted that Fantastic Four was an attempt to rip of DC. The only one of you kids who knows SOME history is this anon: >>154606053
>>154609312what the heck
>>154606053Are we including Cyborg Superman?
>>154614704Hi creator Tom Joyner is such a douche I'm glad they fucked Damage over.
>>154616454how so? Also I don't think it's the same damage
>>154614804remember when he first rented then bought the carcass of Captain Marvel from Fawcett specifically to start a slapfight with Marvel, only to immediately discover that he had lost?he was not a smart guy
>>154604538I preferred Tom Strong as the modern DC FF, but I'm glad they barely touched it.
>>154613408This, always makes me happy to see C-listers prove they're still of worth
>>154617772cool buildings
>>154606053Wasn't it also the JLA that lead to FF?
>>154618878yes
