Isn't it weird that this is the only instance of toys coming to life in front of humans? You'd think Woody would do it to talk to Andy directly. Otherwise, if it was that "taboo" then surely there would've been a better solution to get out of that situation than this

It's really one of those concepts you don't think too hard about, it's a kind of fairy tale logic that the Toys are all living beings and their innate mission is to bring joy to children only the way toys can. They can't just be living buddies with Andy because that breaks the idea. It's okay to talk to Sid because he's lost the privilege of childlike wonder

>>154605025
It had plausible deniability given no one would believe some random kid, up until 5 implied freezing before people is an instinctive mandate and not a choice
>>
>>154605025
it was a life or death situation for Buzz and it took advantage of the fact that most people would freak the fuck out in a situation like this

I'm kind of disappointed we never got the recall draft of Toy Story 3; in that Buzz comes to life in front of his creator to ask for help, and the guy doesn't miss a beat. He knew the toys were alive-his whole purpose was breathing life into toys.

It's a neat concept.

It's poor worldbuilding

So while I will probably never figure out why Buzz toys think they're real by default, I think I know why Andy's Buzz didn't know he was a toy until seeing the commercial despite the overwhelming evidence and Woody pointing it out, including why he still tries to defy it by flying out the window and still talking about "wasted academy training" right after the tea party.

It's really simple.
He hated the truth, it's not much more complicated than that. When you think you are the saviour of the universe, being a mere plaything for a child just seems way too trite. At that point it doesn't matter that your "awakening from suspended animation" happened in what everyone around you says is a child's bedroom and shows obvious signs of being one, that your "ship" has no components besides a flimsy hull, that none of your "equipment" works, that everyone around you talk about being manufactured, that everything around you is giant in proportion to yourself or that you are directly told that you are just a toy. The idea of being a piece of plastic meant to amuse a child will never compare to the delusion, so your mind tries to defend the delusion as hard as it can.

The Doll People series of books did the same sapient toy gimmick but actually came up with a reason for the rule
If a toy didn't play inanimate when a human is watching, they basically get locked in a vegetative state where they're fully aware of everything around them but can't move at all
>>
>>154607010
I recall a puppet (Jim Henson?) Christmas special with a similar rule that if a toy was found "out of place" (not even apparently alive and moving) they'd "die", becoming actually inanimate. They even held a "funeral" where a toy was carried by a toy train and dumped in a pile with other "dead" toys. For some magical reason the dead toys were resurrected at the end of the story.

I don't recall the name.

That was so fucking stupid, like legitimately a bad idea. we dodge one big bullet there, at least we got the real Toy Story 3, sucks that the commies who took over Disney and Pixar made 4 and 5 tough.
>>
>>154607075
It was Henson: "The Christmas Toy"
>>
>>154607138
This one-shot also includes a sci-fi themed toy coming out of its package and thinking the other toys are aliens, not understanding that it is a toy.
>>
>>154605025
its not THAT weird
>>
>>154605025
The sixth or the seventh movie may be about toys coming to life in front of humans.
>>
>>154607119
Eh. I would've liked it better. I was only 17-18 when Toy Story 3 came out (I was a prime Toy Story kid) but even back then I thought that it was phony emotional bait trying to cash in on people's good will and nostalgia.

I find it offensive that Hollywood thinks it's slop of entitled to our emotions like it's a family member or something.

in TS4 they commandeer the mexican family's RV's gas and brake pedals while Mabel yells out directions like a GPS unit. They never visibly broke toy character but they cut it damn close

social communists, not economic communists.
>>
>>154605025
What about all the woody merchandise from 2? Those would all still be toys. Even a faceless Etch N Sketch was given sentience, so why not the Snake-In-My-Boot?
>>
>>154605787
There are some things I like about Recall, like Buzz scratching Andy’s face and feeling dangerous because of it. The other toys locking him up in his box still just does not sound like Woody.

I would have liked the draft with the bootleg Buzz more. The bit with the suitcase handle had to have come from someone who understood the “Borrower” appealpf Toy Story.
>>
>>154605025
That one script when they are in Mexico with the bootleg toys had them attacking the smugglers and driving one insane.
>>
>>154605787
That would've ruined the franchise to irreparable levels, way beyond what TS4 did

I swear this board is a test bed to induce spontaneous schizophrenia in people. You can browse and see the same autism thread slowly drift to the bottom of the catalogue then end up at the top from a necrobump and maintain itself for days or you see the same fucking niche thread topic over and over and over and over again. Shit ain't good here.
>>
>>154611044
What's so bad about TS4?

>>154605025

>>
>>154606809
I think ALL toys think they're real by default, but children imbue a true spirit into them. Woody at one point thought he was a real sheriff.
>>
>>154605699
Still mad at the ending of this short.
>>
Here's my take: kids imbue their toys with life through their imaginations, but most kids are unable to see their toys move because they don't truly believe them to be alive.
Sid had latent schizophrenia, which allows toys to break the rules.
