The issue was the casting. You needed an actor that invokes willpower, a person that when things are at their hardest they still do what needs to be done. Punisher War Zone had fantastic casting of Ray Stevenson to the point they kept casting him VA work as the Punisher and help keep the character's image rooted in what fans love, that didn't save the film from being the train wreck that it was.

I think the GL powers are a cool concept, but I don't think hal (or any of the other major lanterns) have a very inspiring motivation for being superheroes, and I think that is what you need to resonate with audiences across decades. Bruce looses his parents and trains for decades to become Batman, Superman has the contrast of being an alien demi-god who is raised by humble farmers, Spiderman originally chooses to use his powers selfishly and pays the price.

The issue with all of the flops more so on the DC side is the creators do not want to play with the toys given and want to do their own thing which spoils the idea. Green Lantern: First Flight? The one where his origin story is over before the credits? Are you sure you are thinking of the right movie? That said the major issue with that kept happening with those cape products of the time of rushing out a popular idea without the slow burn, in this case it was getting to hung up on Sinestro's fall from grace which just pulls to much attention away from everything and doesn't hit the same unless you actually are familiar with the stories and then it just feels like a sloppy job like Spider-man 3 with Venom.

Right because the massive blink and you miss it time skip which was it's biggest sin, they should have either done like 89 Batman and drop you in the middle of Hal's adventures with a brief origin call back or a proper origin, but that requires holding off the Space police stuff until act two. An example of this is Guardians of the Galaxy where the first film establishes the team and the 2nd and 3rd films have them functioning in their job/mercenary role.

An artist who gets a powerset that lets him create things is such a cool idea, it's amazing that it isn't played up more for a visual concept like superheroes, and in a meta sense of him being a comic character so putting him in other mediums gives him a cool angle.
Hal being an airline pilot seems vestigial for his era and GL being inspired by Lensmen before they leaned more into the powerset being about creating increasingly elaborate constructs.
