Previously, X-23 and Mercury had gone to the Grind Stone to talk when they were attacked by Kimura, an agent from the Facility which had created Laura. However, shew as not after X-23 but Mercury who she captured. She was tortured with bits of her liquid metal skin used to coat Predator X, a living bioweapon created by the Facility for the Purifiers. Hellion and X-23 were able to track them down and through them the X-Men appeared as well, rescuing Mercury though Predator X and the Facility staff escaped. After that, the students decided to tell ghost stories with Blindfold telling them about Illyana Rasputin and Belasco, Belasco's reconquest of Limbo and his desire to bring back Illyana after seeing her alive in the House of M reality. And she stated he thought he knew where she was just as his forced attacked the mansion.Today is New X-Men #38-43.Previous >>154602537
>>154614898Fun, really wish this run had gotten to last longer, its clear kyle/yost refitted some ideas for x-force, but with only two cast members its not the same. And then other writers refused to pay off their ideas.

Are we being botted? why so many storytime threads lately
>>154616958Of course, this is the moment where Gillen decided that this somehow meant David was gay.
The start of the Elixir/Loa relationship which shockingly goes absolutely nowhere. Doubly shocking, Loa is yet another one of this generation of students who will be made gay with no explanation or reason.
And yeah, all this about uniforms and teams and it will, again, go nowhere because the book ends immediately after for the move San Francisco.
Technically there are three more issues left in this series but Messiah Complex runs through all four main X-books (Uncanny, Adjectiveless, New and X-Factor) for the duration to the point where it's basically just a 3 month long weekly event that replaces the books. For all intents and purposes, this is the end of the New X-Men and I could just stop right here and move on to another book. But with three issues I figure I might as well close it out, even if it's not really the same thing and otherwise outside the scope of this whole thing. So next time is part 1 of Messiah Complex.

>>154617038Ahh santo you fucking idiot
>>154617498Young's art is so exaggerated and cartoonish that the characters don't even remotely resemble themselves. Pixie immediately loses the Bride of Frankenstein hair because Land was drawing UXM when she started being used there (I'm convinced she's Lowe's waifu is why) and his porn models didn't have that so he wouldn't have been able to draw it.

>>154617824>Out of all the Jewish heroes in Marvel Kitty is the one most likely to be a ZionistMagneto
>>154617755I debated doing it but like I said considering it's the last three issues of NXM I decided to make an exception and just do it in order to properly finish out the series.I also think what doesn't help is that half of it (the UXM and X-Factor issues plus the one shot) are colored by Frank D'Armata who's awful.
>>154617867Magneto is not a hero, second biggest goddamn Zionist in the setting though hands fucking down right after Sabra. If he wasn't a mutant supremacist first and foremost he'd be the Marvel universe's equivalent of Ben Gvir
>>154617890Honestly I implore you to skip it. There's not much on the X-side of things good from that period and unlike the rest of these storytimes there's not much to gain beyond more pain
>>154618008>Magneto is not a herowell anon>If he wasn't a mutant supremacist first and foremost he'd be the Marvel universe's equivalent of Ben GvirWhat if I told you thats who hes based off of
>>154618008>>154618100Magneto being allowed to be a good guy and member of the X-Men for the last 15+ years is a big reason the fanbase is so bad right now. It basically just legitimized his own views and allowed the fans to adapt them as correct as part of their parasocial relationship with the X-Men that they project their own IRL issues onto as a means of getting back at the people they feel have wronged them.
>>154618176See, weird thing is that they've written so magneto at least conceptaully chills out (which was the idea originally with him as a teacher, where his redemption worked best), the issue is that they made charles another magneto.

>>154618823Well, idk if everyone "now", during krakoa for sure.
>>154616609I don't dislike the art
>>154617755Carey's run on Legacy (the retitled Adjectiveless) is great, one of the best books of the era. The Xavier portion anyway. It gets weaker when Rogue takes over as the central character but I liked Trance as her sidekick.
>>154621671Wasnt super fond of it ngl.
I quite liked Kyle/Yost's run, i get why some people didnt but i thought the character writing was quite strong, and its a top contender for my favorite x-lineup. Thoughts?
>>154621813Personally I think it's worse than what it replaced. I don't really find the stories particularly great, it's too grim and morose and the characters mostly take a backseat to the story aside from a few like Julian. What it has over the DeFillipis/Weir run is better and way morr consistent art.
>>154622480Fair enough. I quite enjoyed it as a run. But i feel julian, elixir, rockslide, mercury, dust, anole, pixie and surge all get pretty good character moments. Undermined by the fact the run got replaced so fast.I enjoyed the weir/felipis run, especially the squad setup, but i wont deny that i didnt find the new mutants..likeable other than sofia and prodigy, and sofia felt generic. All the others just never got the oomph i needed, the hellions mini they wrote did a phenomnal job with them and made them (other than wither ngl) very likeable.
>>154614932wtf, was she about to kiss Hellion here or is that just weirdly suggestive art on that last panel?

>>154617604Those threads atleast provide articulate discussion for the board. storytimes are basically just spam. No one actually reads this shit kek
>>154622556No I think she was basically close to passing out from stress.
>>154615433>>154615478Mercury needs to be in more X-books.
>>154616628It really gets me, reading these through the threads, how often Runaways or Young Avengers gets mentioned. It's really just those two admittedly, nobody's jumping over themselves to talk about Gravity, but still. Also yeah, it is surprising that the Runaways crew never had to deal with O*N*E trying to hunt down and "protect" Molly. Even in Rowe's run, Krakoa got what, one issue of light recruitment? She got pretty lucky sidestepping her mutant heritage all things considered.
>>154622992>kekOpinion discarded
>>154617121In hindsight, Loa probably went for Elixir because she knew he'd be able to regenerate any bits she might end up shredding by accident.
>>154622992Desperate for (You)s huh ?
>>154624476whoa, Blindfold gets with Legion at some point? Pretty good for a chick with no eyes.
>>154622992Nah storytimes are very fun
>>154616972I felt for it here.Kyle&Yost gave me such PTSD I thought they were again under attack.I also fucking lost it.
>>154624476Did she put the whole arm in?
>>154616440Very underwhelmingly
>>154623898Runaways and Young Avengers are people buying a lot into hype I think. Runaways was always the critical darling and something Marvel themselves liked because it's basically the platonic ideal of what Marvel wanted in the Jemas era and afterwards: flashy, snappy Whedonish dialogue, a great hook to draw people in and very TVish in its execution. Young Avengers had a TV guy and wasn't a complete disaster, plus arguably Wiccan and Hulkling were the most visibly out gay relationship in mainstream comics. Like I've said I do think Runaways holds up pretty well under Vaughan, not so much under other writers. Young Avengers I don't think holds up all that well on the flipside.>MollyGiven one of the stories in volume 3 (written by Yost), you could probably say that the X-Men and such have decided it's not worth trying to bring her in or have her around. She'll just escape anyway, her friends will raise hell trying to get her and they also just find her annoying.
>>154627880I think the first YA run was pretty good, the second..wasnt. But witht he first it does feel like it ends right at the moment stuff starts to cilck.
>>154627880I think YA suffers from the same thing Runaways suffers from, but WAY worse. The hook is the best part of the book.>Holy shit our parents are evil and literally own LA what do we do???>Holy shit our Iron Kid is actually Kang but as a young Iron Lad what is Kang going to do???Runaways somewhat meanders a bit, having a whole 18 issues with this ongoing thread and it sticks the landing, ultimately. While everything that follows is mostly so-so, the team at least has a reason to still be out and about. Namely: they have nothing else but each other.YA pretty much bumrushes the Kang plot instead of letting it simmer, with it being resolved 6 issues in. And comparatively, there is far, far less to connect the YA than the Runaways ever had. I have to wonder if some order came down from on high because as it was mentioned in the storytime itself, it did feel like that arc was meant to be finished later in the run with how everyone acted like they were all best friends despite meeting pretty much that same day.Total non-sequitur but I imagine if YA had lasted longer, then a crossover between the two would've been inevitable.
Since this thread is still up, Messiah Complex part 1. Starting with the oneshot.
I said it before but I really dislike Frank D'Armata's colors. He makes everything look way worse. Pretty sure he's the guy who's been coloring Greg Land's stuff for a long time so he probably contributes a lot ot Land's stuff looking even worse than it normally would.
As said, this event runs through every main X-Men book to the point where it's a weekly thing. You had to read all of them for the story, they weren't merely tying in. So it'd go Uncanny, X-Factor, New X-Men then Adjectiveless.
Uncann X-Men #492
>>154629190Reread this recently when I was going through my big PAD reread (RIP) just for X-Factor and man, it really is just torture porn for literally everybody involved. I don't know what the fuck they had against the X-series around this time, but I think this was at its height. And the bus was still fresh in people's memories, so it's not like it was fresh off some happy-go-lucky arc.
X-Factor #25
>>154630183I think it's just a product of the post-Authority/post-Planetary zeitgeist of comics. Look at how Ultimate was, the Avengers, DC in general. The Big Two were just utterly miserable in terms of mood for most of the 2000s. Marvel overcorrected in the mid-2010s and DC's overcorrected since booting DiDio leading to a lot of toothless and banal comics that have no place, either in terms of writing or art, being published as major Big Two titles. I'll honestly take this stuff over garbage like all the non-Gwenpool ANAD stuff or DC's current crap.
>>154630295I personally disagree on a broad scale. I don't disagree with the general opinion, ANAD blew and there are maybe only two DC books I find any modern interest in, but I think I broadly trend toward lighter stories than ones like these. To tie it back to a different story as an example, this is probably why I can enjoy Rowell's run on Runaways while you definitely do not. Of course ideally there's a healthy balance to be struck and she's the horseshoe theory equivalent of edge for the sake of edge, so I don't hold the opinion against you by any means. Constant doom and gloom just gets tiring for me incredibly quickly.
>>154630590>>154630605damn morgan freeman
New X-Men #44
Also time for everyone's favorite artist, Humberto Ramos, to close out this book.
>>154630735197
>>154630842They kind of made a point at the time to keep repeating that 198 wasn't a hard number and that it was a few hundred (they do it here too). The 198 was merely the ones encamped on the lawn of the Institute. But placing so much emphasis on that basically meant everybody just took it to mean there were 198 mutants left and after a point I think Marvel just gave up on trying to correct that.
X-Men #205
Pretty sure is the first time we've actually seen Hope. I debated including Generation Hope in all of this but ultimatelyd decided against it because I really, really do not care about that series and it's clear Hope was always a plot device more than a character. They had no clue what to do with her after Second Coming. That's it for today. Next time, Messiah Complex part 2.

>>154630735I unironically like Ramos. I think hes overhated.
>>154632146I think he's fine on books with younger characters but his style was shit for Spider-Man. It's too cartoony to be the art on a major book like that.

>>154630183>t really is just torture porn for literally everybody involvedI was wrong when I said the Bus Massacre was the turning point. Looking back Messiah Complex is pretty much when the X-men fell down the radicalization hole coming to head with AvX. It's also the point where they're just fucking killing people left and right
>>154629490Man they're just really going hard with this one huh
>>154629518You'll never see an X-men rescue scene this awful until Mutant First Strike
>>154632595This is par the course for Brubaker's Uncanny run. Remember when he killed the entire Grey family or the whole of Deadly Genesis?
>>154632716His Cap run was great, stuff of Legends but dude was not cut out for the X-men, just pure edge in the worst way. Fraction was a bit better and Gillen at least knew how to have fun
>>154614898God, remember when Laura was allowed to be hot?
>>154633061>His Cap run was greatEhhhhh...
Man I love Rockslide and Anole, if anyone hasn't read it then Serve & Protect has one of my favourite stories about them where they decide to be vigilantes in San Francisco during the Utopia days and put on cheap halloween costumes then everyone loves them because they are reported as being a Skrull and Jason Voorhees.
>>154616895I like that basically all of the other adult characters have no clue how to deal with these people while Cyclops just goes buck up and prep for the next mission because he embraced the child soldier life.
