Why don't you like European comics?
>>154617559I find them a little flat and dull
>>154617690Which ones have you read?
>>154617559They’re pretentious as fuckI just want a good time with some cool paneling, stop acting like you’re liberating enslaved minorities by writing your goddamned pulp mag
They're not a esoteric as Japanese or other east Asian comics but there are still some culture barriers that can be hard to bypass. A poor translation can really bring the whole thing down, and with any book coming in a complete volume with a high price tag it's easy to think that the juice can't be worth the squeeze.
>>154617559I don't dislike them but a lot of them make me feel dumb as fuck. I read Enki Bilal's Nikopol Trilogy after seeing the movie Immortal Ad Vitam, and I read Monster, but I feel like I missed something in them. Like I was just seeing the pictures and reading the words but there was some deeper meaning beneath the surface that I just couldn't grasp due to how smooth my brain is.The Elric comics by Blondel from Titan are nice. I'm sure they're condensing and dumbing down Moorcock, but I gave his writing a try and I couldn't get into the prose.
>>154617559too slow
>>154617559I went looking for a few famous runs but they're like hundreds of dollars.
>>154618178>>154618794The duality of dumbos.
I don't dislike them, I just don't find myself seeking them out as much as other comics from other regions, not to mention how long they usually take to release.Plus it's a lot harder to find translated versions of them compared to something like manga.
>>154617559I can't read European
>>154620494youre writing it now
Beautiful visuals but a lot of them just aren't really engaging. It's kinda unfortunate, and the lack of discussion for most of them really says as much.It feels like they go for concept over character, which is a big negative for them because characters carry comics internationally. The funny animal/kids aimed Euro comics and newer, manga influenced stuff feels more readable, the adult aimed stuff just kinda ends up sadly forgettable.
>>154617559I love em
>>154617559The first time you read a European comic and it subverts your expectations and ends on a bleak, melancholy, or straight-up downer of an ending, it's novel. The 37th time you're just sick to death of it. Not all European comics do this, but most European writers seem to revel in pessimism and wallow in misery.I can't remember the number of times I've read a French or English or German comic where it ends with everyone dead, or every character abandoning their goals, or everyone destroying whatever they set out to save, or everyone finding out their quest was a lie, or everyone worse off than when they started, etc. etc. etc. And yeah, sometimes that kind of story can be interesting to read, but not every single goddamned fucking time you pick up a comic.I think Kairos was the point where I finally gave up on European comics. Just one depressing subversion too many.
>>154622565>The 37th time you're just sick to death of it.Nope.
>>154617559I enjoy them plenty actually, but there's a lot American comics, manga, and regular books to read too. I'm actually reading the Cimmerian and The Mercenary right now though
>>154622616If you enjoy depressing comics, good for you I guess. A lot of readers don't - at least not every single time.
>>154617559Bad art, no good stories. Also, Europeans suck at narration and panel composition.
>>154622676I like a bit of everything, but my main concern is the quality. If a well-written, well-drawn comic has a great effect on me, I appreciate it, whether it makes me happy or sad. A low-quality comic that ends happy can eat my shit.Plus, on top of not finding every Euro comic depressing as you say, I change it up constantly.
>>154617559I do but they're harder to pirate and new book releases take forever. Where's my part two, Vehlmann?
>>154622629>there's a lot American comicsnot really
But I do
>>154617559Art looks kinda stiff and the panel layouts are too generic and don't help the already stiff artwork. Writing is mostly middling too, and they're not very creative, lots of generic low fantasy or historical crap.
>>154617559Boring and pretentious shit that not even their readers actually enjoy.
>>154622793Fag
>>154617559Who told you I don't like Eurocomics?
I find the more ‘serious’ stories rather boring, and while stuff like Asterix and Lucky Luke are good, they can’t compete with a great American strip like Popeye or the Barks/Gottfredson stories.
>>154617559>boring pretentious storytelling that goes nowhere >it's okay though because a teenager showed boobiesI hate the fans more tbqh
>>154623355>>154623367>>154624929What exactly have you anons read? I didn't really get into euro comics until a couple of years ago and they are definitely better more artistic than American comics and more mature than manga typically is
>>154617559Basically what >>154622013 and >>154622565 said. European publishers have pivoted more in recent years, but really only in comics aimed at very young audiences; stuff aimed at older readers is still overwhelmingly pretentious and depressing.
>>154617559Because I don't like Europeans.
>>154623178Wtf? Then was all that stuff I read?
>>154617559Because I'm gay.
>>154625234Yeah? Throw some examples of that, because your statement comes off as a joke.
>>154626886So you're brown?
>>154631329Everyone here is.
>>154617690>>154618178Ironically, they're still better than what America has.
>>154632090Personally I find American Alternative and Underground comics far, far superior to either European or Japanese comics.
>have an active digital sub to 2000AD and JD Megazine that I've had since last year>eagerly await every issue>also treat myself to a couple of books off of the webshop once a monthFeels pretty good man! Been in love with Dredd and 2000AD since I was a teen and feels nice to be able to read a bunch of the stuff that I missed out on from the vast library of 2000AD
>>154617559I haven't read many outside Moebius. I last read this one, I am their Silent, and thought it was pretty good. Has a sequel out, don't think it's translated yet.
>>154632176I hated this skank, but the art was really nice.
>>154632223Art was the best part by far, but I enjoyed this crazy skank as the mc. I feel like the plot really went off he rails after a while though
>>154632160Anglo comics don't count as European
>>154632369Mah dude, Britain is a European content and part of the EUAlso 2000AD was heavily inspired by Metal Hurlant
>>154617559Don't like them? From Coco Bill and Alan Ford through Asterix and Obelix and Lucky Luke to Blubbery and Corto Maltese there are tons of European comics for every taste.
>>154632433I have to agree with him. They are obviously European but they have such a different style and aesthetic, they feel totally distinct from the rest of the continent, not American either but something fairly unique. Judge Dredd for example isn't a superhero or anything but he feels closer to that than anything from mainland Europe to me. British comics feel like their own thing.
>>154632151>American Alternative and Underground comicsLike what?If you like the Crumb type of undergrounds, check out Zanardi.
>>154617559I'd read them if more of them got fucking translated. So many of them never get translated to English and it fucking sucks.
>>154617559Are there anymore high fantasy stories on par with Thorgal? I'm sort of casually aware of Papyrus and love it's mythical Egyptian setting
>>154632176It's out, Kaskus has it.
>>154633391nice
>>154632433Brexit means Brexit
>>154617559Manga mogs themSad but true
>>154634176This is false. They have different strengths. I read and enjoy both.
>>154634176Why is that sad? Why is it true?
>>154633201Good question.
