Make another movie or a TV show. Have the source material more widely available.

Phantom 2040 taught me that Phantom works best outside of a modern setting. Whether classic pulp era or near future cyberpunk, Phantom needs a touch of separation to sell the fantasy.
>>
>>154625094
I agree with this. 2040 was cool, as was the 1996 movie. I recall some Phantom Phans in Fennoscandia not liking the movie because it was so retro pulp and serial inspired, they were used to Phantom existing in modern day. Phantom could work in any time period because he's a legacy hero.

Phantom 2040 is so weird. It's like a series that exists only in the imagined memory of someone who vaguely recalls seeing one Saturday morning that no one else believed existed... But it does.

>meaning when The Phantom is public domain they will start doing cease and desist like how its done with Tarzan.
How the fuck can they keep doing that after it's public domain? I knew the Edgar Rice Burroughs estate still holds Tarzan and John Carter tightly, so much so they're both being more and more forgotten by newer generations. I believe Zoro was going through something similar, but how the fuck can The Phantom still be tied up too?

I'm inclined to agree, he needs to have a level of "distance" to his time period. Pre-modern/pulp era makes him like a complete urban legend on a tropical island type, far future makes him more like Batman Year 100

Phantom isn't tied up in anyone's estate because it's owned by Hearst all the way back when William Randolph Hearst himself was alive. He made sure that shit was corporate owned. Falk's estate has no claims on anything.
King Features keeps trying to get their characters adapted over and over, Phantom just doesn't take for whatever reason. They tried in 1996, they tried in 2009, and they're trying again now.

Technically none but it's been said he's got above average poison immunity, though I think that's just said to handwave him getting drugged by villains a lot.

Otherwise he's just a nirmal man but at peak human capabilities. His main "powers" outside of that is his resources, as he's got plenty of treasure, information and allies to help him on his endeavors.

There are no pulp magazine stories. It's a comic strip.
>>
>>154637853
I'll copy paste my thoughts of him from a previous thread:

>The key aspects that makes him interesting is that this is his day job. He is The Phantom. The comic even points out in captions that "Sometimes the Phantom disguises himself as a man" for when he dresses like a civilian in order to travel or infiltrate. So there's no drama about secret identities or work life balance etc. It's refreshing having a guy be a one man army, super cop who sees injustice and goes to defeat it.

>Another aspect is the legacy. It's a tradition going back hundreds of years where the Phantom's sons are trained from birth to take on the mantle after their father is killed. So there are many stories that are historical fiction where an ancestor Phantom is taking part in real world events. One of my favorites is when he teams up with Benjamin Franklin pre revolution in Scotland to solve the mystery of the Loch Ness monster.

>To be honest, he's a bit dry personality wise, not much to him other than being a strong good guy, but he's a vehicle for exciting adventures. Another aspect I like is that it is generally grounded (ignore the living stegosaurus he has in his secret garden of eden) where his enemies are tribesmen, poachers, islamic terrorists, corrupt officials etc. While he has a generational nemesis in the Singh pirates, besides a symbol they rally under they're not "super" villains in the traditional sense.

Oh, so The Phantom is a mantle. I can roll with that. And its cool for how different times can have their own Phantom. From the breakdown you gave he certainly feels like a pulp hero of the time. Like Tarzan or John Carter. Relatively simple character wise but the fun is in the strong direct hero deals with the big adventures he stumbles into.

A lot of these estates have grown into little cancerous nests of people who make their livelihoods abusing the rights for money, usually without the living relatives, if they even have any, seeing more than relative pennies. The lawsuits being legitimate or not usually doesn't matter since the intent is to use the existing money fueling a legal battle as a scare tactic to get people to settle or fold entirely to fill their coffers and allow them to continue for a few more years not needing to do any actual work.

Straight up, the smart thing to do would be to try and do their most to keep the IP desirable while selectively whoring it out for more clout in the public consciousness, but the inbred rats that make up the estate management aren't smart enough for that.

For some reason, Phantom is really popular in Sweden, so much that his comic sells better than the big DC and Marvel heroes over there. His book comes out twice a month and you can find it in basically any store that has a newsstand.

In Sweden, Phantom's costume is blue. This was due to the Swedish translation of the newspaper comics coloring him wrong all the way back in the 40's, but he became so popular by the time the mistake was discovered that they just kept him that way ever since.
>>
An amusing thing is the original comic strip show how Lee Falk changed his mind about who the Phantom was mid production.

The comic strip starts with his future love interest Diana Palmer meeting up with his handsome, rich but cowardly man who is always missing whenever she's being assailed by thugs but luckily the Phantom appears to help her, then disappears before the rich idiot returns.

It was clear he was going for a basic secret identity, with a Bruce Wayne, Clark Kent set up, but then that man just disappears and we get the reveal about who the Phantom is and the legacy of it etc. It's just neat to see a clear change from what is obviously telegraphed. The closest to this I've seen similar to this was in the manga Dr Stone where it starts off with Taiju as the protagonist and with Senku as the sidekick/costar. But the creators must have realized the more interesting character was the super genius and not the goodhearted and strong oaf, so while he isn't killed off he is written off for a while and becomes a secondary character.
>>
>>154644111
Yeah, originally conceived as Gray but it wasn't clear in the newsprint and thus became purple.

Sweden made a mistake when publishing it and by the time they realized it was too set in people's minds that it was blue.

I've never read them myself but Italy he's red.

I can't blame them, he had turned into "the guy in the amusement park" instead of "the hero from the comics".
Regarding Op's question I think the swedes and aussies should get together and make something like Fantomen Krönika aimed at the american market. Reasonably big and reasonably inexpensive (fuck collectors, focus on readers) TPBs, each focusing on some theme. There's a boatload of adventures the americans have never seen.

Absolutely. That's how it is in Sweden with the Chronicle, as it's reprints in black and white. It's clear black and white isn't a hindrance thanks to manga, and with the price being lower it'll let people take a chance. Seeing a 100 page digest for sale for 5 bucks would allow people to take a chance on it.

Predates Holmes (and Batman Beyond for that matter) by 5 years. I think it's more, the Phantom is an easy character concept to put in any time frame as long as it's after the original, so they just decided to hop on the cyberpunk dystopia fad.

I wish there was more piracy of Swedish comics, can't find any examples of what I want to show.

There's this comic called Illustrerad Djavulskap (Devilry Illustrated) that had a fantastic parody of The Phantom called "Fantomten" (combining Fantomen and Tomten (Santa Clause)) where the two main character meet Santa Phantom in the norhtpole and it just hits every beat about the Phantom but transposed to the North Pole.
>>

>>
>>154624648
Does the Phantom have costumed villains or is it mostly pirates and regular crooks ?
>>
>>154654935
I don't imagine they got many reruns or omnibus collections.
>>
>>154654942
Mostly pirates and regular crooks. They tend to be above just a mook though. There was a fun comic strip arc where a dying millionaire finances an expedition to the jungle to find the Phantom because he's heard of the "Man who cannot die" and thus hopes to buy his secret of immortality. He's a bald fat man who looks distinct but as he dies once the Phantom reveals the secret to him he isn't a regular.

On that topic, there aren't too many regular from what I can remember. The Phantom tends to be quite particular about killing his enemies so not too many recurring ones. At most we have villains who have met with him before but we only meet him now, as they reveal a Skull mark to reveal that he's scuffled with the ghost who walks.

I would love something like an animated kid series on the level of Batman TAS. The beginning of the intro to The Legend of Tarzan would be a good basis for the intro https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mlIVYfcVKpc
>>
>>154656869
Don't remember him doing that in the parody but there was a North Pole Saying "Fantomten gives soft presents to the hard" translated from "Fantomten ger mjuka paket till dom hårda" which in itself is from the original Jungle Saying "Fantomen är hård mot dom hårda" which localized would be "The Phantom is tough against the tough".

On another note with that Chrstimas parody, a big part of the real Phantom's lore is that no one but his closest family may see him without his mask. Anyone who does so will be cursed (which has happened though how much of it is a self fulfilling prophecy and how much is an actual curse is ambiguous). So at the end of the parody Fantomten faints and the protagonist of the comic (a buff evil scientist) decides to check under his mask and is horrified to find out it's just dad.

Goodness, I'm just reminiscing of all kinds of Phantom stories now. Regardign the mask thing, there was a fun story set in the past where he's washed up on a lighthouse island. I can't remember the justification but two sisters work the lighthouse and they rescue him. Both pull his mask off and see his face (he's really handsome of course) but he stops them warning them of the curse. Shit happens, one of the sisters wishes to have him for herself, she dies. The other sister is freaked out but Phantom reveals the secret of how to get past it, and thus asks her to marry him.
