Disney was close to rejecting it, but then had a heavy change of heart, and successfully greenlighting it as a show because the president of Disney's TV animation division was a huge fan of adult animation, particularly Family Guy and King of the Hill, and both Dan Povenmire and Swampy Marsh had ties to both shows, respectively. As such, they pitched the show and made it as Disney Channel's own SpongeBob.
