Most mammalian females, humans clearly as well, have an instinct to kill their children in cases of difficulty because if the mother dies so does the children, but if the women lives and the kids die she can get pregnant again.
This instinct malfunctions in modern industrial society when certain environmental ques activate the behavior erroneously.
