Ice Age: Continental Drift turns 14 today. The film marked the beginning of the franchise's and Blue Sky Studios' downward spiral. It made slightly less money than its predecessor, and then Collision Course killed the franchise by making less than half than what this one did, marking the beginning of Blue Sky's growing irrelevance in the animation industry which resulted in the Mouse shutting them down.
Are you ready for Ice Age 6, brought to you by the same animators who gave us Ice Age: The Adventures of Buck Wild?

Man I fucking wish. Also, I don't think Boiling Point would stoop as low as outsourcing their animation to a TV animation studio. (Considering that's what Buck Wild was intended to be in the first place, a TV show.)

>Captain guuuut

Everyone knew that it started with 3

When are they bringing back the eskimo baby?

I don't know, in financial terms, between Ice Age 3 and 4 Blue Sky released Rio, their most financially successful non-Ice Age movie and the only other movie of theirs to get a sequel, Continental Drift made less than its predecessor and started a downward trend they never recovered from, it's just that no one noticed because it still made almost 900 Million dollars at the box office.
Like if Ice Age ended with 3 it would be considered a franchise that despite peaking with the first one it had enough restraint to only be a trilogy.

It's only about ten seconds long. It's an animation test that recreates an existing scene. But even if the artists were likely not limited by time or budget, pic shows that Bardel can produce high-quality work when provided with the necessary resources.

IIRC Blue Sky did think of bringing back the humans at some point.

That's really cool! I could see improvement in their CG stuff with Foodtopia as well, it was quite hard to distinguish their work from the other studios that worked on it. (Meaning they did a good job at replicating its "house" style.)

3 just escalates 2's "Unfrozen Mesozoic Creatures" villain conflict and gave the series a solid place to end with Manny being a dad again.

Yeah Continental Drift was just bland. The most noteworthy thing about it was the musical number at the end.

This was a completely alright movie. It doesn't have the impact watching 1, 2, or 3 does (moreso in the order of 1, 3, and 2 maybe?) It was Collision Course that felt like a nothing movie to me. Very in one ear and out the other.
Regardless the one thing I can say for this franchise that I can't for many other long runners is that the characters are never stagnant. You end a movie with something newer than you entered with.
>2nd one has them living among a community, Manny begins moving on from his dead family with a new mammoth
>Manny has a baby, his family has started again
>His daughter is now a teenager, and he has to struggle to get back to and protect his family
>She's an adult now and getting married and he has to come to terms with it
The movies absolutely get more generic from 4 and 5 but at least the characters still feel like you can engage with them as actual characters. Better than "we'll never age our characters" Incredibles or "the characters go in directions blatantly against the morals exhibited prior" like Toy Story.

If anything Boiling Point, just from the synopsis, sounds like it's the first time the series has stepped backwards, because they're just pulling a "what if we went back to the last location from the most popular movie 15 years ago but there was stuff you totally never saw before that was always there". Maybe they'll do something decent with the characters but eh.

Adventures of Buck Wild is the first time the Humans are acknowledged in Ice age since the first one.

It's also written by the same guy who wrote FOP... seasons 7-10.
