1- This applies to many, many things(Lara Croft is the most famous but there are several, and for women too.) And it never was and still isn't a problem if you can get someone to buy, play or watch because of your character. If it’s still a success, the credit is yours.
2- "Not having a personality" isn't an essential factor. Most of the time you just need to be convincing. A lot of famous anime characters are called "generic" or "without personality" and people don't even care, because to them it's still interesting. The same could be said for the action heroes from the 80s and 90s.
3- Just like saying "it's badly written," saying "without personality" doesn't have objective criteria. Usually: if something is popular it's "well written" even if it has plot holes/excuses and whatever. If something is hated it has "bad writing," whatever that means.
