>Great premise
>First two volumes are good
>Rest is shit because Alan Moore
We need more comics that use the public domain. Alan Moore was on to something before he decided to do meta commentary. Nothing is stopping anyone from making their own League of Extraordinary Gentlemen using the same characters.

Alan Moore would have totally used Popeye in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. I am glad he didn't get the chance. He would have done something stupid with him.

We need more six-gun gorilla

If I was good at drawing animals I would try to make more stories with him.

>We need more comics that use the public domain.
why exactly?
>>
>>154653180
multiple characters neglected by major corporations can be given new life by fans of the source material
>>
>>154653206
yea... but why? why putting all that energy and ressources into a forgotten corpse when you can create something new, original and exciting instead?
>>
>>154653270
Because "creations" are actually combinations of old things and gatekeeping and excess copyrighting made you forget that
>>
>>154652825
Popeye is public domain? I assume it's just him and not his supporting cast yet? Either way I'm surprised this didn't inspire any attempts at Popeye stuff.
>>
>>154653180
Because creativity is dead and also to own Disney i guess.
>>
>>154653452
No, he's public domain as of last year
Olive Oyl's been public domain since the 90s
And someone found out that King Features didn't renew the copyrights to a lot of comic strips so it might actually mean Bluto and Wimpy are public domain

>In 2025, when Popeye started becoming public domain in the US, the character was the subject of several live-action horror films that reimagined the character as a murderous antagonist:

>Popeye's Revenge, a British horror film directed by William Stead and produced by ITN Studios. It was the first live-action horror film centered on Popeye, played by Steven Murphy. The film was released in the US on February 13, 2025, on VOD before being made available on Amazon Prime Video on February 19, 2025.

>Popeye the Slayer Man, the first live-action horror film centered on Popeye to be produced in the United States. The film, distributed by Vantage Media, revolves around a group of friends who sneak into an abandoned spinach factory, but are now haunted by Popeye, played by Jason Robert Stephens. The film was released on March 21, 2025.

>Shiver Me Timbers, a British horror comedy film centered on a monstrous version of Popeye, played by Tony Greer. Gravitas Ventures released the film on April 1, 2025.

Well fuck was I out of the loop. Never mind then. Guess he's been getting his fair share.

Anyone getting the Thimble Theatre reprints? The best part about public domain is getting convenient collections for out of print stuff.

Trademarks only prevent you from advertising specific characters in the title or marketing.
>>
>>154654036
corpos won this war a long time ago
>>
>>154653653
6:34 - 13:00 is the part about the Thimble Theatre reprints
>>
>>154653356
But if that's the case why not just make new combinations of old things? Public domain is fine if you have an actual idea/reason but trying to force it is what leads to trite like the horror cash-ins. Most good uses of Public Domain are usually intentionally building on an idea/legacy of what these characters mean.

I'm planning to read the whole thing soon. /co/ is not reliable at all when it comes to judging comics, so I have no choice but to look into things myself. The pages I've seen look good.
>>
>>154652825
Popeye is American.
LoEG chiefly leans on British and European works.
>>
>>154655524
/co/ is not the only place that says the story suffers after the second volume. It starts great with these characters meeting and fighting villains like The Avengers. Unfortunately, Alan Moore decided to turn the comic into hypocritical social commentary about fiction.
>>
>>154655570
Moore still used Tom Sawyer.
>>
>>154655669
Other places are even less trustworthy.
>>
>>154653270
>>154653356
You fight a wrong fight. Public Domain characters that are successfull or have a good base are the ones you should use. Thats how Alan Moore took characters whichare still popular and known in popculture.
Than your aim should be with good concept characters to use them as inspiration and make them your own character. First noone can sue you, because it is based on Public Domain. People cant op on your success because it isnt the Public Donain character.

He entered a while ago, but was in Life + 70 years countries for decades at this point.

One is a crossover with Betty.
>>
>>154654093
I don't think so, with the public domain unfreezing, it is quickly eating big franchises.
All of Oswald the lucky rabbit made by Walt was pretty much eaten.

Next year a lot of Betty Boop shorts will enter the public domain. It will let people use her name and human design.

Yeah but they've got a near century headstart ontop of it not being the entirety of those properties. While the corporations will eventually lose a monopoly they still have a massive infrastructure to out compete anyone as well as milk ideas dry at a leisurely pace.
>>
>Complain about the corporations taken your creations
>Your most famous works involve other people's characters or facsimiles of them
>>
>>154652542
Nah it’s pretty good consistently. You’re probably just mad that Moore did more with it than just forever stuck being a victorian era capeshit fanfic with public domain characters
>>
>>154652542
It is pretty funny how you could legally just make League of Extraordinary Gentlemen again and no one could stop you.
>>
>>154659918
But why would you do that when you can just bitch and moan that you didn’t like where Alan Moore took the series?
>>
>>154655679
Did he? The movie did, and I don't doubt there's probably mention of Sawyer here or there amidst the billion characters mentioned through LoEX, but I don't remember anything of notice
>>
>>154659918
I think as long as you don't use some like Campion Bond or William Samson Sr (which are Moore's creation), you're good.
>>
>>154659942
I mean, that last installment was universally hated from what I read.
>>
>>154659859
This is the hypocrisis of Moore. And makes him look more like Roroschach.
>>
After the disastrous movie and the public lack of interest in the series there isn't any reason to do anything with League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

Resuscitate dead series or just print more edgy Batman slop? The choice is clear.
