>Marvel announced today that veteran editor Stephen Wacker has been named Editor-in-Chief, Marvel Comics. Wacker will take over from C.B. Cebulski, who will be moving to Japan to become Editor, Asia Originals, for Marvel.

>"Few editors have had as long and accomplished a career as C.B. I'm grateful for his partnership over the past decade and thrilled that he'll be on the ground in Japan, connecting with local artists and overseeing Marvel's original graphic fiction and manga in the region,” said Brad Winderbaum, Head of Marvel Television, Animation, Comics & Franchise. “At the same time, I'm excited to welcome Stephen Wacker back to Marvel. He is a tremendous editor, a passionate advocate for creators, and someone who deeply understands that Marvel Comics is the source code of our entire enterprise, with a publishing resume that includes some of our most beloved modern runs."

>Wacker is an acclaimed comic book editor and creative, with a long history of collaborating with the industry’s best and brightest comics talent. He previously spent more than 15 years at Marvel, seven of them as a senior editor overseeing several beloved and influential modern comic runs — including the best-selling “Brand New Day” and “Superior Spider-Man” eras of Amazing Spider-Man. During his previous Marvel Comics tenure, he also served as the editor behind the Eisner Award-winning comic series Daredevil and Hawkeye, the critically acclaimed relaunch of Captain Marvel, the introduction of Kamala Khan, A.K.A. Ms. Marvel, and the Marvel Infinity Comic series It’s Jeff!
>>
>Wacker also has extensive experience across Marvel’s animation, television, and digital media divisions, where he expanded the brand’s reach and helped introduce Marvel’s iconic characters to new audiences. He co-produced the Emmy-nominated Rocket & Groot animated series in 2017 and served as a co-executive producer on several animated series, including Avengers Assemble, Ultimate Spider-Man, and Guardians of the Galaxy. He also executive produced the enormously successful Wastelanders audio series for Marvel.

>Prior to joining Marvel, Wacker worked as an editor at DC Comics. Post-Marvel, he served as EIC for Jonathan Hickman’s groundbreaking worldbuilding project 3W3M. Most recently, he co-founded the entertainment studio Stone Kite and served as SVP, Media, guiding storytelling across various media.

>“Picking up Marvel Two-in-One #50 as a kid is what made me a comics fan, so returning to Marvel as Editor-in-Chief is a full-circle moment that I'm still wrapping my head around,” said Wacker. “I’m proud to join Kevin, Brad, David, and this incredible staff and amazing array of talent to build on the work started by Stan, Jack, Steve, Flo, John, and so many more. I truly believe the best Marvel comics have yet to be written and drawn, and I can't wait to get to work adding some new floors to the House of Ideas.”
>>
>Cebulski is the third longest tenured EIC in Marvel’s nearly 90-year history. Prior to becoming Editor-in-Chief in 2017, he established himself as one of the industry’s top talent recruiters, discovering new talent from across the globe like Skottie Young, Pepe Larraz, Marco Checchetto, and Peach Momoko, who have brought new flair to the pages of Marvel’s comics.

>As Editor-in-Chief, Cebulski shepherded ambitious creative initiatives and oversaw nearly a decade of comics storytelling, including the relaunch of the Ultimate Universe and the acclaimed “Krakoan Age” of X-Men comics. He spearheaded Marvel’s most comprehensive manga partnership with Shonen Jump, creating titles like Deadpool Samurai and Spider-Man: Octo-Girl. He also introduced Marvel’s Stormbreakers, the premier talent program designed to spotlight the next generation of elite comic artists, as well as Marvel’s Art Atelier, the talent training program jointly run with Disneyland Paris.

>Said Cebulski, “I'm incredibly proud of everything we've accomplished at Marvel Comics during my time as EIC, and I'm excited for this new role the leadership team has created for me. I’m looking forward to pursuing new opportunities across Asia while staying close to Steve and Marvel's brilliant publishing team, who are all like family to me."

>In his new role, Wacker will report to Winderbaum and Cebulski will be part of Wacker’s global leadership team.

I don't really get Stormbreakers because for the past eight years or however long it's been it mostly just seems to be a label they attach to variant covers by Peach Momoko and Gurihiru. Rather than up and coming talent they feel very well established by now.

It's lining up like that
>>
>Stephen Wacker is an American comic book editor and television, animation, podcast and digital media producer. He was nominated for an Emmy Award for Rocket & Groot and has overseen many comic book series at DC Comics and Marvel Comics.[1] He is well known for editing comics such as 52, The Amazing Spider-Man, Hawkeye, Ms. Marvel, Daredevil, and Captain Marvel.

>In 2000, Wacker was hired as an assistant editor at DC Comics where he worked on comics including JLA, JSA, and 52.[2][3][4]

>He was recruited by Marvel Comics in 2006 and held the position of senior editor, working primarily on the Spider-Man titles (including Brand New Day) and Guardians of the Galaxy franchises.[5] In 2013, he relocated from Marvel Comics' New York headquarters to Marvel Animation in Los Angeles where he held the position of VP of Animation.[6] Wacker is credited as co-executive producer on many of their animated series, including the Avengers Assemble and Guardians of the Galaxy series that aired on Disney XD.[7][8] In 2017, he transferred to Marvel Television where he was a VP of Development where he produced Marvel's Hero Project, Marvel's 616, and Marvel's Behind the Mask.[9][10][11] In 2020, Wacker transferred to Marvel Digital Media as VP Head of Content.[12][9] In 2022, he was hired as editor-in-chief at 3W/3M Comics (Three Worlds/Three Moons) and left the following year to pursue an unnamed venture.[13][14]

https://aiptcomics.com/2026/07/16/marvel-comics-relocating-bstephen-wacker/

>Despite the move, Marvel emphasized that New York remains central to the company’s identity.

>“New York has played a huge part in who Marvel is as a company, and in the pages of our comics,” Winderbaum and Abdo wrote. “While our network of writers and artists is now an international operation, New York is still woven into our DNA and that will never change.”

>The relocation marks the end of an era for the American comics industry. Marvel’s predecessors, Timely Comics and Atlas Comics, helped establish New York as the center of superhero publishing, and legendary creators including Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Steve Ditko built the Marvel Universe there. Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, the Avengers, and countless other iconic heroes have long called New York home.

>The move also means New York will no longer house one of the industry’s major publishers, following DC’s relocation to Burbank in 2015.

>Marvel plans to begin relocation orientation sessions for affected employees and their families next week, with the transition unfolding over the next 12 months. Stephen Wacker will officially assume his new role later this month, while C.B. Cebulski joins Marvel’s global leadership team as he begins overseeing the company’s expanding manga and Asia Originals publishing efforts.

That explains why the Shueisha license was terminated. No bullshit reason about a HQ getting exploded, Marvel is going to publish their own manga there and they're cutting off with Shueisha since there is no reason to license it out any more.

Yeah, they released multiple Manga based on Marvel characters.

Here are the tiles:
MARVEL × Shounen Jump+ SUPER COLLABORATION
SECRET REVERSE
Spider-Man: Octopus-Girl
Spider-Man: BONDS
DEADPOOL: SAMURAI

Marvel has a better foothold in Japan, from my understanding, miles ahead of DC. I believe even indie comics are doing better than DC in Japan, so I'm not entirely surprised that Marvel might shift to trying to make manga.

I think the most obvious reason he is going in charge of the japanese version of current Marvel output.

When marvel had their collapse during late ANAD, some people were worried this was gonna happen if things kept getting worse.

Fun thing, the shogun got instated after Bendis quit marvel for DC. Now that DC beat marvel in overall sales, there's a whole ass shake up. Seems the bar Disney holds goes something like "are we beating the competition?"

Like imagine a dude on the internet notices that your comics are being leaked weirdly early and alerts you that the printing company has a security leak that people are using to steal your comics before they even go to print, but the guy also said on his blog that releasing two issues of daredevil a month is hurting sales so you gotta harass the shit out of him.

It was literally:

>Stephen Wacker2: Having rotating artists that have clashing styles would never harm sales [user was blocked for this post]

>>154664602
I think the problem is not about money but how the manga market works. You can absolutely sell individual chapters or issues like with floppies. But you are limiting your reach to a very specialized market. Most of manga readers got into a series thanks to being regular readers of a magazine. Those magazines are not just and anthology but they have and identity in their brands. You want wacky comedies or dramatic stories go to Kodansha's Weekly Shounen Magazine, you want edgy stories with memetic appeal read Akita Shoten's Weekly Shounen Champion, want a mainstream and by the numbers action series go to the Shueisha's Weekly Shounen Jump.
And that is talking about the magazines oriented to young readers, there are a lot of others ones. Even the digital only ones.
What is Marvel strategy exactly to penetrate into that? They can't use their usual gimmicks, and the market doesn't see comics as collectionables like in the USA. It's just an easy access, cheap entertainment. And I'm highly sceptical about the shogun ability to understand that. If anything, I think his work would be put the translated "evergreens" TPB of Marvel with a new cover made up by a 'hot' japanese/asian artist and call it a day.
>>
>>154664827
magazines are a thing of the past mate, everyone in jap reads digital subscription
>>
>>154664599
Sort of. As much as I think some of the stuff listed is overrated, there's no denying that he did have successes under his watch. ASM sold well when Slott did Superior, Waid's Daredevil consistently got a lot of praise back then, Fraction's Hawkeye and Ms Marvel vol 1 sold consistently well for Marvel in the bookstore market, so I could see why they'd pick him as EIC.

But remember a lot of these were back in the 2010s when the fanbase was different
>>
>>154664850
The problem is BND is beyond bad fish smell in its welcome as seen with Slotts recent ongoing that wasn't, and they are now putting the guy who headed it in charge right when they are losing their market share and the ongoing is completely out of step with the wider franchise.

marvel under celbuski was headless. breevort ran his own empire, spiderman office had no oversight at all, avengers office was basically left to its own devices. The EiC was just a jobbing positions.

I don't know if this will change with Wacker. Maybe he'll start barking orders. But I think Marvel may actually be dead at this point. We talking "disney promotional mouse movie comics" dead

They read a subscription of a specific brand. And if they are just casual lectors that got into a series from the FOMO they just read the individual chapters. But you need first to build that FOMO and that usually is thanks to the synergy that anime and multimedia adaptations bring to the table.
Like even when I read a digital series, I got offered extra points to unlock another chapter if I read the chapter of another series from the same magazine.

>Like even when I read a digital series, I got offered extra points to unlock another chapter if I read the chapter of another series from the same magazine.
this is a cross-promotion gimmick by the publisher, unrelated to the anthology magazine concept

is buying a marvel full subscription to read their whole catalog the same buying a magazine anthology?

That's why I said I could see why they'd pick him (companies look at past successes), but also know that these were 2010s successes. What worked then may not really work now, like for instance that Slott BND mini in your example.

Because even the FOMO readers got invested on other series from the same magazine because they like the brand appeal. You go an try another series because it would be cater probably to your interest. And non-FOMO readers care because they like what the brand is offering.
Like you clearly don't read japanese digital to see how they propel their ecosystem and justify giving away for free most of their work. But even outside you can see the same model with the Jump+ service and how people keep getting hooked up with other series.

I beleive you are conflating magazine with publisher. Shuesia is not the same as Weekly Shonen Jump. At this point, actual magazines or bundle comic sales are a minority of the japanese industries' method.

Comic sales and standarizing worldwide and there's little different between japan. kora, china, europe or the usa. discovery and reading happens online, some try to paywall their content, and if it gets popular people buy print and merch for collecting. This is how it goes everywhere.

In regards to BND, I'm not going to blame Wacker for that in that what was he going to do, not implement Quesada's ideas? He wasn't in a position to refuse it. His value is largely in organizing and keeping things running smoothly which given how much there was to coordinate with BND and 52 isn't really a small thing. He was also good enough to reject Slott's dumber ideas like Clone Conspiracy. what any of this will mean for Marvel creatively I don't know but it'll probably be a more tightly run ship at least.

The problem I think is that he went online to get into arguments with people who criticized BND. Had he not done that there would've been enough plausible deniability that he had to go along with what Quesada wanted

The magazines are the ones that dictate the editorial direction and oversight the individual series. Even if their print (hint, 'print') numbers is in decline since the 90's, they are still the basic unit of now they appeal to their niche in the market.
That is what japanese people search first when they search for a series.
Also the digital market is not standardized at all, nevermind that Korea and Japan have a freemium model but with and easy availability with the most recent issue. When in the case of the USA the most recent issue is the one behind the tallest paywall. Or the difference that in capecomics people sought for ownership of a digital comic, and on Japan people are attuned with a rent model.

Going to follow up on this by saying I doubt this will ever change, because Spider-Man specifically is an enormous influence on the Tokusatsu genre and very well-known over there. Holy shit this just unlocked some ancient memories for me. I remember I used to frequent the car forums way back around 2008-2012 and I vividly remember steven wacker being a psychotic nuisance on those boards. He would get into pages long arguments with anybody who gave even the small criticism towards any marvel title but especially Spiderman. And it was in the most childish, immature manner too. He would constantly be on those boards looking fpr a fight, too. No one would mention hik but he would inevitably show up in nearly every thread. The admins did nothing because he worked for marvel and Wacker would take advantage of that to just harass what was most likely a bunch of teenagers.

I was around 15 back then and between him and the way they ended ultimate Spiderman I pretty much stopped reading any marvel titles.

I'm in my thirties now and had completely forgotten about him but the name Wacker triggered some old memories.

The fact such an annoying infantile little bitch like him not only managed to find work at marvel and but work his way up is the real problem with marvel. They know what he's like and they know how he likes to fight with fans. Fuck him.

That was a single dave willis comic strip that people who never read comics like to repost.

That audience never existed. Most people who discover comic characters through cartoons or movies don't actually want to read comics about them, they just want to more of the cartoon.

Starfire could have been dressed in a fucking barney suit for the last 20 years the people who complained.about her outfit still wouldn't have picked up a comic about her. They just wanted more of the cartoon.

DC and marvel have been chasing an audience that was never interested in comics as a medium for the last 20 years and they wonder why they're circling the drain.

Once again, the comics being so niche means that mainstream attention works like daylight on roaches.
OMD works because the overwhelming majority of the public doesn't know that for close to two decades in real life Spider-Man has sold his marriage to the devil. It's a premise so absurd, so darkly hilarious, and yet treated as the few mandates about the character, that it's only saved because Comic books are such a nothing niche that alienates newcomers.

Oh not this horseshit again. JMS was being a disingenuous asshole over ASM's sales and the way he's a disingenuous asshole about almost anything when he needs to make himself look good and whoever he's against look bad.

JMS was crowing about how sales were down compared to his run which also meant he was directly attacking Wacker and the writers Wacker was in charge of. His "proof" was using single issue sales but the entire point of BND was Marvel knowing that an individual issue of ASM would take a dip but the overall sales per month would be up and higher than ASM + side books. Which they were. JMS likely knew this as well but was intentionally obfuscating and lying to make himself look better. Wacker can be a douche but JMS is always a self-serving jackass who intentionally distorts events and information to make himself appear better i.e. his lying over OMD.

No, the editor is who dictates what happens and the publishing office is who dictates how its sold. Japan doesn't even do editorial offices, every book is managed by a single editor. Fuck off retards. I've hated JMS for 20 years because he's a merely above average writer on his best day and a giant prick 100% of the time. The one thing he's very good at, not writing mind you, is taking fan anger and twisting it to his own benefit to make himself look good.

Marvel did BND under the logic that the ancillary books weren't selling as well as they should so ASM 3x a month would lead to higher overall Spider-Man sales than ASM + Sensational + Friendly Neighborhood, even if each individual issue sale of ASM was slightly lower. That was why they did BND and they were right about it because yes, the overall sales of the Spider-Man line picked up because they knew fans didn't view the ancillary books as important but would buy Amazing multiple times a month. JMS trying to use individual unit sales at the time was the disingenuous part because that's not what Marvel was measuring but he was doing it to push his argument that he was better and screwed over by Marvel.

I genuinely do not like JMS. That's it. At least other assholes like Byrne have great comics to back up their egos with. JMS has Morlun and totems.

You not knowing what an editorial office despite posting in a thread about marvel comics does not mean i'm lying, disingenuous word twister.
Case you forgot, Marvel subdivides into offices who are placed in charge of specific brands or lines and a budget to commission books.
Japanese publishers in general give an editor to a single writer who approves or cancel the book. Editor may handle multiple books, but he has the ultimate authority over what the writer does, with no other editor being able to contest him.
This is the wildest difference between japanese and american editorials. Meaning, there's basically no difference in editorial practices. there's not "anthology magazine office" that rules over everything

I don't think I'd believe in Disney being that hands-on with Marvel or the execs at Disney or Warner actually getting all STOP DEVALUING OUR CHARACTERS at the writers and editors until I see it happen.

Until we have proof of that, this looks like it'll just be "meet the new boss, same as the last 3 bosses". He was the BND editor and an editor brought in during the Quesada years, so nothing's likely to change on Spider-Man, he had a hand in Carol becoming Captain Marvel and Kamala being introduced, so we're likely stuck with both of them, he went all in on performative woketardery, so if anything we could be in for a backslide to the worst of the Alonso years, and his thin-skinned overreactions to the slightest criticism of anything Marvel did don't make him look like the kind of person who'd be wanting to address and fix the mistakes of previous regimes when he could double down on them, insist they were good, and argue online with everyone who disagrees.

The only real mysteries are whether he'll continue with Sebulba's MOAR X-BOOKS LIKE IT'S STILL THE 90S business strategy, or it he'll be the EIC to finally wake up and downsize that line, and which characters will suddenly get an attempted push just because the new boss likes them.

Wacker has a history in the comics but has been at animation and TV for the last 13 years under Feige's leadership and now they're moving from New York to L.A. to be even closer to Marvel Studios.

I don't know if this means Disney/Feige are going to dictate stories per se but I do think what it's going to mean is that there's going to be pressure from Feige through his drones to make sure that the comics versions are in line with the movie and video game versions of the characters and that writers will be encouraged to make stories that are ready made to be adapted into other non-comics mediums. In effect, my worry is that Feige is effectively the real head of Marvel and is going to slopify the comics to feed the movies even more than they've already been and that a lot of the problems with Marvel are going to only get worse.

The only way to save Marvel from a quality standpoint would be a complete divestment from Disney back into being its own company but that's obviously never going to happen and even if it somehow did would be unviable in an age of mass media consolidation and they'd just get bought up by someone just as bad or even worse (Paramount, a Chinese company like Tencent, the Saudis, etc.).

>current X-Men is a '90s throwback
I swear to god, is this a reddit take or something? Have these people read '90s X-Men comics? Current X-Men is a Schism throwback. I have said this many times before. Go read the Schism era comics, then read the current comics. It's Schism nostalgia, not '90s nostalgia, because Brevoort has a giant boner for writers like Bendis and Aaron.

been a thing for decades already
>>
>>154668527
I'm aware of that. What I mean is that it's going to be even worse and even more blatant that the comics exist entirely to feed the movies. The movies will be leading, the comics will be made to support them and act as an idea farm with no illusion of them being or doing their own thing. That's why I said I'm expecting all the problems to get worse now that they'll be directly under Feige's thumb and not have the benefit of being on the other side of the country to allow them to have more leeway.

Are the current X-Men comics based out of the mansion? No. And while in a vacuum I wouldn't mind if they were I will have a problem when it's done because that's what the movies are doing and Lord Feiggot demands the comics conform.

Bullshit.

Feige and the MCU lost the Mandate of Heaven in 2022 with Dr Strange 2 and Thor 4, he needs to go as much as anyone does, but "bringing the comics more in line with the movies" doesn't sound as bad as you make it sound when the comics have spent the last 10-15 years turning everyone they can brown or gay.

>The only way to save Marvel from a quality standpoint would be a complete divestment from Disney back into being its own company
>and firing everyone
>and de-canonizing virtually everything from at least 2001 onwards

>I swear to god, is this a reddit take or something?
I was talking about how many X-books they're publishing, not the content of them. They're making more than 10 per month like X-Men was still as popular as it was in the 90s even though these days most of them sell like an injection of AIDS. The ones that get storytimed here certainly do seem more like nostalgia for the Benis era than anything else.

CB somehow managed to tank the comics during the biggest boon the marvel franchise has ever had and possibly will ever have. They probably are doing this as a quiet firing or they believe he has this ability to keep a division just barely alive so they are going to ship him to Japan to work on books no one has heard of. Im sure he'll go over great there.

Wacker either got demoted or they are desperate to get some degree of competence in.
>>
Midnight is going to be such a fucking disaster.

I can't wait.
>>
>>154669609
No, he was already hired by Marvel as an editor when the company imposed a rule that editors can't also be writers, and he worked around that rule by getting other editors he was friends with to hire him as a writer, but he'd use a pen-name, and it was a Japanese name because he's a weeb.

The idea that nobody at Marvel knew "Akira Yoshida" was actually CB Cebulski just isn't true, they knew they were hiring their friend. Readers at the time widely suspected Yoshida was a weeb and not a real Japanese writer.

There is not a book. But a magazine with different series, every one with their individual editor. And that magazine is competing with another magazines inside their publisher. Like are you slow or why are returning to talk about previous talking points?
>>
>>154670270
oh, no, Marvel will cancel your mini on issue 4 of 6 for not meeting shareholder targets. that writer had a history of being an asshole, and had already alienated a huge portion of the progressive twitter/bluesky crowd. lots of stone throwing from a glass house, and it didn't help that both fans and haters of Jason Todd did not like the book, and no one's as masochistic as Spider-Man fans so they didn't hate buy the book, either.
>>
>>154670328
>There is not a book. But a magazine
A magazine is a "book" in publishing parlance. As in, a bundle of pages that are printed. The contents are irrelevant beyond their sale value.

An editor takes care of a book. IN the big 2 publishing system, there's offices of editors which have a budget that commission books from scripters/writers and artists.

Otherwise, in most non-indie western publishing companies, AND IN ALMOST ALL COMPANIES IN JAPAN INCLUDING SHUEISHA'S JUMP COMICS LINE. There's one editor ruling over a "book", in japan there's a thing with "assistant" editors, ergo editing office #3 of sheisha, the "mainline" of jump having a dozen editors-in-chief (where Yu is only one of unless he got recently promoted to head of editing office 3#) for every serial (individual works by a writer/artist combo) which sheisha publishing office, in accordance/suggestion of editing office #3, prints in tankobons and chooses which serial goes into the magazine. The latter being increasingly irrelevant since japs today READ AND FILTER SERIALS ONLINE.

You can try swerving all you want, you'll not find Shueisha or the japanese publishing industry of 2025 standing out in any way compared to the US, Korea or China. Back to /a/ with the exceptionalist larp.
>>
Or back to gaia maybe, since /a/ scanlates and obtains their rips exactly from the sources i described

The only one you can say were "on their own" were Miles, Nova (Sam) and Kamala
the production of Captain America Civil War was where there was a major clash between Marvel Studios and Marvel Entertainment, because the latter believed it would be too costly to bring RDJ back. Even though Feige won that argument he knew there'd be a time when they need to get the main Avengers off the table because of increased salary costs.

Put it this way, we all saw what happened in the All-New All-Different era and the second Marvel Now. Feige should've seen what happened with Ironheart in the comics and avoided using her. Instead he chose to continue to use her, even though Bendis was part of that Creative Committee which Feige wanted to override, which makes me believe she had to be part of some mandate from Feige (like "can you guys give me a replacement for Iron Man?" or something)
>>
>>154664827
Why not make comics cheap as well? Just think about the situation, nowadays you can buy a cheap video game off steam that will entertain you for 40-50 hours for the same price of 1-2 floppies that will entertain you for 2 hours at max. Comics are being held hostage by old and out of touch comic shop owners who don't want to lose business. Do you wanna know what marvel is going to next anon here let me clue you in

>The story begins with peter's visting gwen's grave as he arrives there he is suprised to find her casket dug up and open and Gwen's body missing, as he wonders what the hell happened to it he is suddenly engulfed by a great white light from above the sky and the next moment he vanishes. he then fiinds himself in space by a city made by the The High Evolutionary and is confronted by him we then then see a bunch of humans he has captured along with gwen's body. As it turns he has big evil plans for the human race among them he wants to resurrect Gwen then give her superpowers.make her a supervillain and then make go up against spider-man. Oh and it turns out he knows peter is in fact spiider-man. So Gwen is brought back but stripped of her memories of her past she does not who she is buy despite that she has a hatred for spider-man and the two them end fighting each other. But this doesn't last for long don't want to give up too much away but suffice it to say that Gwen does get her memories back and she and spider-man foil the The High Evolutionary plans.

>Gwenschizo's posting his gay fanfiction again.

>>
>>154674162
yeah you right we here at marvel are still woking o the story but these are pretty much are plans fotr gwen. Oh yeah so what happens next is this

>After Peter and Gwen foil the the High Evolutionary plans they are find themselves back on earth it is at this point Gwen confronts spider-man about her father's death since when she got her memories back she also got the memory back that peter is in fact spider-man. anyway the whole thing abour her father's death gets resolved. So Gwen says that her feelings for peter have now changed given everything which has happened and that she no longer loves him. In fact she says she needs to be alone anf find her own path so she dumps. So what happens next is she becomes a superhero and starts to fight the bad guys. After a while the avengers begin to taker notice her of handiwork and they offer her to be a back member to which she accepts and then after a bit she becomes involved with another avenger member they fall in love and begin a affair.
>>
So… from what I gather. Nothing has really changed and Yoshida was promoted out.
>>
>>154675144
Probably. At least with Yoshida he doesn't pick fights online while he was EIC. I don't know if Wacker learned from that or not. It is concerning to see the number of randos in the Bleeding Cool comments section try to downplay it.

He has a better track record as an editor/coordinator by comparison (compare Wacker-era Slott vs Lowe-era Slott) which means the Marvel Machine will probably run more smoothly compared to Yoshida-era. He'll probably make some decisions that'll piss off people though

When DC moved from New York to California they lost half their employees. Tom Brevoort said that he’d rather leave the company than move to California a few years ago. There’s inevitably going to be some major shakeups downstream too, and it’s not looking good for guys like Lowe or Brevoort.

At a minimum, they’re going to have to lose out on a lot of old employees, and hire new people. It’s unavoidable at this point.

That's just it. These comics keep selling worse with each year. And since the new boss is the same as the old one, it's going to keep flopping.
>>
>>154677571
Wacker is a pretty good editor. It's the moving and all the sudden leadership changes/firings that's questionable. DC had tons of leadership changes and firings and it made the company worse for about 2-4 years years before things started to turn around. And even then DC's editorial is still pretty sucky because they let a lot of shit slide that would've been caught before when their editors weren't stretched as thin.
>>
>>154680447
NTA but Marie Javins has done a pretty good job overall as DC's EiC since 2020 (kind of a rough time to take the job, too). Not many issues with delays or unexpected cancellations (when they happen they're isolated to problems the writers/artists are having), doesn't have a draconian mandate or weird obsessive hangups that get in the way of creatives, events are coordinated between books pretty well.

You basically never hear about her because she just... does the job.
>>
>>154680602
Editorial is one of those jobs where the more aware the audience is of their efforts, the more obvious they are doing it poorly.
>>
>>154680602
Some of those editors and writers could use some wrangling, going too hands-off is also a mistake.
>>
>>154663279
Cebulski being the Marvel guy in Japan is up there with Dini marrying a real life version of his waifu.
>>
>>154680675
Lemme guess, Tom King WW and Huh-twosh? I think the latter they just wanted to kick out the door, it had already been delayed a bunch - it might literally have been her wrangling that kept it from being delayed even longer.

I wonder how aware the Japanese are with the shoguns antics.
Have 2chan had any threads about this?
>>
>>154680771
The few japanese accounts in Twitter that post about amecomics have mentioned but nobody seems to care. Superhero comics are a very niche product there.
>>
>>154681164
And Marvel is trusting the Shoguns penpal to turn that around?
>>
>>154680687
The dude was there for years before ever working for Marvel. He was a military brat or something where he lived between bases around there and America. That's what led to him getting a job with Central Park Media (early anime VHS distributor/licensor) which was probably one of the best positions to have to keep a foot in the entertainment industry while being as talentless and uncreative as he is.

Does anyone know how out of Akira's depth he is, when it comes to Japan and/or Modern Japan? If Marvel's editorial is so incompetent that they let Bennett and Jewery get through, do you think some mangaka is gonna be able to sneak anything in? I guess they'll respect the company with their whole autism about respecting corporations too much to do that. But then again, there some madlads there.
Also imagine the interaction Akira has with some mangaka or otaku who basically gives him the ultimate redpill and says they'll undoubtedly fail because their books won't have sexy characters.
>>
>>154665271
What is the context of this? Who is raping whom?
>>
>>154681842
Go pirate Superior Spider-Man issue 2 and see for yourself. Pic rel is one page. Basically Ock jacking off using Peter's memories. Slott wrote this abysmal trash that somehow Stegman agreed to and Marvel signed off on. Stegman should've BTFO'd them. Ock's also going to kiss MJ at one point in the issue but she like shoots him down and feels something is off. Before that she already kissed him with Ock in there in issue 700. But the fact it got that close is insane. Some may be exaggerating that it was tantamount to rape but...it is some weird shit Ock would never fucking do because he's only ever been into Aunt May or Stunner and his egotistical personality would see MJ as a shallow person and nothing else. He wouldn't even stoop to trying to do anything with her except find out more of Peter's secrets or hold her hostage. Y'know shit that should happen in a popular book for kids and adults and not this weird degenerate ragebait garbage that Slott was trying to farm ragebux from and get on Brevoort's cock and ride it to royalties and more movie deals that fat faggot constantly bitches and moans about wanting.
It's a level of sleaze that Ock never showed before and MJ isn't this dumb to even be in this story at this point, instead she should've immediately seen something was off. This type of "comedy" that Slott went for, corrupts and destroys any sense of characterization these books had. And it veers the book into being a soapbox that Slott grabs onto and says that everyone who enjoyed old Spider-Man is the shallow creep because they admired beauty rather than that dwarf cardboard cutout of Anna Marconi.
>>
>>154681842
This was around the time of Superior Spider-Man, they're talking about if Ock in Spider-Man's body has sex with Mary Jane counts as rape by deception

I assume that despite Wacker being flippant they had to quickly avoid that because they didn't want another Michelle Gonzales situation on their hands. Remember those parts of BND?
>>
>>154681961
I'm not one to samefag but in this case I forgot to say but comics being for kids as Wacker puts it, betrays the fact they wrote shit like this, Disassembled, Ultimatum, Civil War, etc. Books that have gore and a bunch of sleazy shit that is immature edge that they painted the 90's as. How does a disingenuous faggot like that think Superior is ok? Oh I know...the fact Darwyn Cooke poured a drink over Lowe's head shows how stubborn and retarded they are when it comes to their jobs.
>>
>>154681985
IIRC it wasn't over Lowe's head, it was over Alonso's head
>>
>>154681977
I think someone on the Wonder Woman 84 movie tried that same debate tactic Wacker said but since it was the 2020, everybody clowned immediately on that scene with Diana and Trevor and made fun of it for being rape by deception. Wacker would get raped nowadays on social media if he tries the same shit or is still as bad as he was or is as bad as current day Lowe.
Flippancy doesn't work anymore. Suprised it worked back then. But I guess Marvel has become so saturated and news is so slow, everyone is watching Spider-Man like a hawk to hammer these faggots into the earth.
>>
>>154681991
Ah ok.

https://www.tcj.com/the-darwyn-cooke-interview-by-markisan-naso/4/

Found it. Still seems like he regarded Lowe the same way. Haven't heard as much about Alonso but reading old letters columns by him make him seem like Lowe 1.0 because of how smug and self-serving his responses are. I know anons have stories about bad Alonso decisions probably so tell those if you want. It was over Marvel Adventures or Cooke wanting to do something with kids Marvel books and the idea getting poached from him right or was it something to do with how the stories were getting decompressed and shitty?
>>

Ah, triggered the spider-schizo and got the meltdown answer. Nvm.

>>
>>154682042
Nice strawmanning. Tell me next time you finish reading more than one page of a book. I won't care but it will impress me considering your current argumentative skills. Or better yet, write an answer that isn't just cowardice cloaked in apathy.
>>
>>154682037
Yeah basically Cooke pitched a kids line, he and other friends like J Bone would work on it. Sometime later they announce either Marvel Age or Marvel Adventures, I don't know which. Cooke gets pissed, confronts Alonso at a con in 2004 a dumps a beer on his head.

I think Lowe took a shot at Cooke in an issue of Wizard over the incident and Brevoort, getting a question from someone about why Cooke hasn't done more work for Marvel, just flat-out said that Cooke poured a beer on one of their senior editors as the reason
>>
>>154681977
Good, a non schizo answer. Yeah, it's terrible optics and the answer of Wacker make it sound like an ass. But it's pretty in line with the David Brothers melty that others have poster here.
>>154682011
I wonder how people would have reacted to his answer in Brothers book about trasvesting to use the bathroom of the office. Seems that at least he learned to shut his mouth in public.

I guarantee you the thing with the 10 issues or less and all the other shit is coming from above editorial and I doubt will get any better with further Disney scrutiny. DC gets away with it because Warner in general has always seemed more hands off and at the moment their corporate owners aren't in a position to micromanage them.

>>154681808
I think people are vastly overestimating what Cebulski's new role is. Probably he might help try and sell Marvel for things like video games and new anime series or something but it's an effective exile while still hoping that either they get some use out of him or he gets fed up at being in a do nothing position and leaves.

>>154682056
Keeping seething, it's very entertaining.
>>
>>154682063

Lowe is a scorpion in the scorpion and thr frog fable. You'd think he'd like shut his fucking mouth after that incident but nope. For some reason he has to say what happened, dragging himself, Alonso, and Cooke down. Weird immature thinking.

I hate comicsthebeat website almost as much as I hate rich the leech.

>It’s worth remembering that by the time he left Marvel as editor in chief, Axel Alonso was pretty much the whipping boy for everything wrong with comics, but looking back….man, that was a fun era! A lot of new things were tried, and new, valuable characters were created or old ones repurposed. The biggest problem at the end of Alonso’s tenure, as I recall it, was the endless reboots that didn’t go anywhere and got rebooted every nine months. Cebulski ended the diminishing reboot returns, but even back in 2017, when he took over, people were complaining about Marvel’s sales, just like they do now.

>Part of this was the backlash from a segment of the community that branded everything they didn’t like as “woke.” Ironically, the anti-wokers are still saying Marvel is too woke and wishing to return to a previous time – when it was actually way more diverse in demographics AND content. That’s because these folks don’t seem to actually pay attention to facts or logic.

>What must Marvel do now? I’ve written about this many times here before, but the Buckley/Cebulski/Gabriel/Bogart regime at Marvel operated for a long time under the weird ways of Ike Perlmutter. Weird ways like not promoting the X-men or the Fantastic Four when they were at a different studio, and not having a functioning backlist, and other stuff. From a piece I wrote all the way back in 2011, when Marvel was undergoing seasonal budget cuts:

>Paul Levitz, our comics history laureate, had a post about it on FB. Since it’s short I’ll quote the whole thing:

>It’s probably hard to imagine, but in the early ‘70s, DC, Marvel, Western, Harvey, Archie, Skywald and Warren were all within about a mile and a half stretch of Manhattan…totally walkable…plenty of coffee shops and hangouts in between, and only another mile or so to the ball fields of Central Park. The comics creative community was tiny, but it was an easy time to form friendships and interact. Several of the newspaper syndicates were in that same neighborhood too. The only outliers were Charlton up in the wilds of Connecticut and Western’s LA office.

>Wishing the Marvel folks an easy transition either to Burbank or wherever they may each choose to go next.

Picture this scenario during secret invasion the Silver Surfer comes across a human being captured by the skrulls held in suspended animation, he is shocked to find out it is none other Gwen Stacy. Since the skrulls deception is uncovered they can come clean with their scheme. As it turns out they abducted the real Gwen Stacy long ago and then reoplaced her with a agent of their own. It turns out norman never really had a affair with Gwen rather he was having a affair with a skrull who took upon Gwen's form. In addition tto this the "Gwen" he murdered was in fact a skrull. The skrulls did all this since they wanted to ruin Peter and Gwen's life oh and it turns they knew Peter was in fact Spider-Man. Yes coming soon straight from marvel arts enjoy anon

BND guy or not, backlash over Paul damaged the company, and Marvel was already pivoting to aggressive MJ pandering with the sixtieth anniversary, VenoMJ, and killing off Paul. They're going to drag their feet on the marriage for forever, but given Kelly said he had to cut the Raelith plot short, I'm pretty sure Peter and MJ are due for yet another reconciliation. Hopefully this one is allowed to last.

Among other decisions. It's pretty easy to forget, but two years ago, it looked like DC was on its way to becoming about as small as Image. Absolute pulled their fat out of the fire. Now Marvel and DC's positions have been reversed.
>>
>>154685330
Killing Ultimate out of nowhere was a retarded move. Ultimate Spider-Man was very much a 'BREAK GLASS IN CASE OF EMERGENCY' kind of book, and once it looked like they were out of hot water, they got cocky and decided they didn't need to keep the line going.

The fact that news of Ultimate's relaunch was even more abrupt than its cancellation shows that the Quesada cronies in editorial got way too cocky, and assumed people would be lining up to crawl back to ASM as soon as they half-heartedly killed off Paul.
>>
>>154685391
They didn't kill Ultimate out of nowhere. Hickman and Momoko didn't want to do any more than 24 issues and they had no one else good lined up. DC was dumb enough to give Deniz Camp an exclusive contract, repeating their mistake with Bendis.

>>154685491
I'm afraid to say that Zack has never been an honest or reliable guy.

The whole 'the CREATORS wanted to end this on their OWN terms' was just a bullshit line editorial wanted the writers to feed to the upset fans. If it weren't the case, pivoting to a relaunch completely out of the blue makes no sense at all.

Either Marvel was lying when they said they always planned it to be a limited run, or else Marvel was lying when they said the creators cancelled it willingly. If you're a freelance comic book writer, an already low paying job in a dwindling industry, it's never a good idea to bite the hand that feeds. You tell people what you're told to say, it's what's painted as professionalism.

I'm not talking about variant covers retard, I'm talking about the actual comics.

I guaran-fucking-tee you if Zeb Wells was able to quietly shuffle her off to her dream life with the faggot Paul, we wouldn't be having a 60th Anniversary Issue, we wouldn't have VenoMJ, and we wouldn't have Paul getting shanked to death.

Editorial knows they fucked up, that they're in trouble, and they are desperately trying to swing the pendulum back in the other direction again, somehow, without pandering to the audience *too* hard.

Like with Ultimate Spider-Man, this sudden massive MJ push is very much a BREAK GLASS IN CASE OF EMERGENCY scenario. She's Venom, she's centered in two crossover events, she's being set up to get back with Peter, she's getting an anniversary issue, and Paul's a rotting corpse in the ground that only Dylan Brock sometimes barely acknowledges at this point.

That's a hell of a lot more than just a few store-exclusive variant covers, nigga.

VenoMJ is complete trash, though.

>>154685656
I'll take that shit over Jackpot and Paul any day of the week. Most of the people upset about this are annoyed Eddiefags frustrated by the fact that Zeb's run was so shit that they now need to dedicate Ewing's Venom book to run damage control for that garbage in tandem with Kelly's ASM.
>>
>>154685645
>I guaran-fucking-tee you if Zeb Wells was able to quietly shuffle her off to her dream life with the faggot Paul
There would still be anniversary variants because variants are Marvel's actual money maker. Add on to that the fact that MJ is one of Marvel's most beloved female characters and normal non-schizo people don't really care about the Paul shit, only her, will ignore all that because it's fictional, and just focus on her

Regardless of anything with Paul they would've broken up eventually because of Marvel's policy regarding status quo and 'putting the toys back in the box' once a run is done.

Now you're the one being delusional. They fucking hate her. They hate the fans like her. Up until it bites them in the ass. Losing a decades long market share lead and being forced to lurch out of New York (with all the massive manpower attrition the move will cause) is an emergency. Outwardly, they refuse to show weakness. Internally? They're fucking falling apart, and this is the culmination of years of bad decisions, which also included Paul Rabin.
>>
>>154685330
that particular quarter is rather an outlier, there was never a real threat of Image overtaking DC. Image was being boosted by Invincible hitting fandom critical mass with its second season, and DC would have already been gearing up for Absolute by Q2 2024. big events tend to take a bit of focus from the existing books just before they happen.

DC was already back over 25% of the dollar market share by Q1 2025, and despite the claims of comicsgate doomer retards, the industry has actually been growing over the last few years.
>>
>>154685863
If everything was a bed of roses over at Marvel, Cebulski would still have a job and they'd still be operating out of New York. Paul's death was by no means 'inevitable,' they dragged their heels on that faggot for four years straight. Paul's death was an admission of weakness, plain and simple.

And they're better off, and we're better off, now that they've finally given up on trying and failing to make Paul work.

Ultimate Marvel lasted for only two years despite being their most successful imprint and the only real competition Absolute had.

Paul Rabin, despite being a poison pill that only ever dragged down sales, hated by seemingly everyone, and even used by DC as a way to mock Marvel, lasted four years. That's the level Marvel was operating at, and more heads need to roll than just Cebulski's. We have an editorial culture that rejects success out of pride and embraces failure out of spite.

>How much work do you think Rob Liefeld going to be getting over at the Big Two in the future?
Liefeld did his "final" Deadpool comic back in 2024-25. The last time he worked for DC back during the New 52, it was a disaster, no incentive for them to work with him.
>>
>>154686157

and given the rather quiet reactions to complaints about working with Marvel from other creatives (which tends to happen if they're baseless complaints), it's kind of an open secret that Marvel does not treat people well at all, and a lot of that comes from well above the EiC position.

it might help explain why Marvel seems to have so much trouble holding on to artists compared to literally any other publisher.
>>
>>154686259
I grant you, but getting back to the point: it would not be a good idea for Deniz Camp to make enemies anywhere, even if he happens to be working at DC for a while. This is not a tenured fucking professorship.

so the (Marvel) artists have to shut up and stick around? why
also, if they're bullied by someone above EiC. who then? execs?

>Liefeld's been pissing off a lot of industry people for being ComicsGate adjacent

Every time I look, he's maybe saying something that Comicsgate/Fandom Menace types latch on to... but then some time later he ends up pissing them off in some way (ie supporting Nolan's Odyssey, liking everything from Deniz Camp that isn't Ultimates). I heavily disagree with him on some things but like him more than the parrots on the Comicsgate/Fandom Menace side and the Mainstream Comics clique side
>>

you need to be 18 to post here.

this is more about underpaying, under-crediting, and overstretching people. it's the way Disney treats creatives in general.

He seems to be doing well enough for himself with that 3W3M thing he's doing with Hickman, Mundo, and Huddleston. Get a name big enough and you don't need to do anything with Marvel or DC. They're not the only options when you've already established yourself at those companies.
Deniz Camp doesn't talk like a guy who has a gun to his head off-screen. He comes across as genuinely enthusiastic about the work he did and he also says he was given the freedom to do anything he wanted within the established parameters of "every issue happens in real time and the Maker shows up after two years."

Ewing still sucks at writing this shit and the only reason they are bothering with dragging up this specific piece of continuity being Paul existing is to get more ragebux. The Venom book is vapid and boring. His characterization of MJ while not egregious like Slott, is still boring. And the whole design and execution of the idea was horrible from the start considering it wasn't She-VenoMJ. Jackpot and this new design are both garbage.
And they still haven't even capitalized on MJ and the symbiote in an interesting way as characters or in ways like how old Spider-Man comics did where the mindscape was actually cool looking, dramatic, and led to real character growth.

If that shit actually worked, Marvel would not have pissed away a decades long market-share lead. If the people in charge knew what the fuck they were doing, they would not be moving to California.

Digital piracy is trivial. You can see all the shock panels posted on social media. People will steal books they don't like, and buy the ones they want to see more of. Paul didn't make them the slightest bit of money.
>>
>>154686847
>if they knew what they were doing they would not be moving to california
Paul being around longer is due to ragebux. I did not say it worked or was a good idea. Just that it must be what their perspective or idea was. However, I do think Perch is right in that this move to California was inevitable since this shift is just to get all aspects of Marvel under strict Disney corporate control so that Netflix and Jeph Loeb and that type of stuff doesn't happen again.
Yes I do agree Paul was a massive albatross around their neck in that it distilled every previosu gripe we've had with Slott, BND, OMD, and Quesada into one singular example for us to absolutely btfo Marvel and destroy their muh sales argument with Hickman's nu-Ultimate.

He's right about that; after Ike got fully forced out a few years ago, Iger outright said they were preparing to fold Marvel fully into Disney.

i think it depends on the nature of the statements he makes; to a certain extent with how insular the industry is, i don't think Marvel or DC can really afford to make it look like speaking your mind while not under their employ will burn bridges with them. it generally doesn't: people who voice complaints or unpleasant stories still get work in the industry.

bottom line, you've sort of got to REALLY go out on a limb to actually burn those bridges. a horror story or two about working at a place (e.g. your standard industry dirty laundry) isn't going to cut it.

maybe Marvel changes in that regard under Disney and starts holding employment grudges over tweets, but thus far i don't think they have - and they'd be a historical outlier if they did.

Nope. It's now where the rubber meets the road. Schizos like this are those who try to kill discussion and act as stooges for the very faggots that ruined Marvel. Whether they are connected directly or not at all to Marvel does not matter, they want the same result which is for the books and this medium to be shit. They are deranged losers. This is the part that isn't up for discussion as the evidence is already abundant and pasé at this time.
>>154688785
This never makes sense to me. Announcing a report like this. Basically taking the mask off and trying to kill discussion on a board that champions free speech and survives off donations (4chan passes) and ad revenue solely to win your side of an argument. Get real. And if others say arguing with a schizo to get real is insane because it is unlikely they will ever change their mind? Yeah well I take breaks and let others btfo this fag into the ground while I enjoy comics.

Liefeld is mad that nobody gave a nepochance to his son in Hollywood. That is why he is going scorched earth. Also even if you argue he isn't loaded, he is financially secured to skip jobs.
>>
>>154686259
>dude burned bridges with Image, which he fucking co-founded.
While he didn't get his founder status back, they eventually let him come back and everyone put the past behind them.

In general Marvel and DC have historically tended to be willing to bring back talent who burned bridges and talked trash about them if their work still sold and they were seen as a draw, but in the last 10+ years, the industry seems to have shrunk so much that nobody dares talk about the absolute state of what's going on behind the scenes at either of the big 2 anymore because they're afraid of being blacklisted for being 'difficult'. Liefeld is one of the few exceptions who'll talk trash about Marvel and DC because he probably made enough money back in the 90s that he could have just retired years ago. And enough fans seethe about him that they'll just dismiss anything he says anyway.

When we can see the absolute state of the books they're publishing, We can see something is clearly going wrong, but nobody working there dares to talk about what's happening for fear of being fired and blacklisted. The last time we really got a lot of people in the industry dishing the dirt on the state of things in either of the big 2 was DC early in the New 52.
>>
>>154691228
Word gets around behind-the-scenes. While they can't publicly complain they can talk creator-to-creator on some things.

But sometimes word gets out. Perch was already gradually hinting (gradually leading to outright saying) that Marvel was also having possible problems (ie late payments) at a time when other Youtubers were focused on their IS DC DYING?! videos. The only thing I was suprised about the recent Greg Capullo tweet was that a big name in the industry was ready to call out Marvel over not paying people on time.

Ousting DiDio really did DC some favours as a sudden flood of good ideas held back only by outrageous ego at the top came in.
Problem with Marvel is they have an entire Hydra of DiDio's, they are self selecting and have been for decades.
It's why it's always the same old gnarled hands when we have an avalanche of new creatives bypassing them on new media.

They want the youth market, but do nothing but alienate and keep away the youth from their office, and so they are forever out of touch and losing the market.
>>

>the industry seems to have shrunk so much that nobody dares talk about the absolute state of what's going on behind the scenes at either of the big 2 anymore because they're afraid of being blacklisted for being 'difficult'.
Hickman was pretty open about why his X-Men ended the way it did. Leah Williams talked about the editors rewriting one of her X-Factor issues without her knowledge and at DC she talked about the editor told her not to bother doing any research into Power Girl and just to write her own idea of how she should be. If they don't talk, it's because they don't want to, but nobody's actually been punished for speaking out.

It was WAY fucking better than it had any right to be, but I wouldn't take it seriously at all. Basic concept is that Doc Ock, while fighting spiderman has a malfunction in his brain transfering machine and gets part of himself transfered into a bullied teenage japanese girl in a coma. Spiderman thinks he killed doc ock.

So girl and ock now share a body, sort of firestorm style. Ock sees her get mistreated and remembers how he got treated and wants to go full supervillan, but she keeps him from going too far.

The "oh people are just PREVENTED from speaking out" thing comes from comicsgate folks in denial over the fact that the people actually in the industry (and not parasitic youtuber hangers-on) don't actually agree with them. It's your bog standard conspiracy fare.
