ITT: Cartoons you can’t believe existed.

For the longest time I thought this thing was just some made up character from Robot Chicken

That was easily half the shows made from 1991 to 2002 or so. None of the attempts were half as successful.

Even then by the time this was made, TMNT anything had really fallen off so wanting to imitate it was a waste of time. Kids were into Power Rangers clones and Pokemon.

Really, any one of the shows that are wrapped around grossout and/or gross jokes like Sumos and the constant butt jokes or Mega babies and the constant diaper and drool jokes. Nothing based on gross stuff like that ever really works as a show. It's just weird nonsense every time they try it. But for some reason they kept on trying it over and over again.

Packaging R rated movies for kids was a standard of the 90s.

If they did not make a cartoon spinoff, the movie itself at least got a toyline anyway. They made Robocop toys, Rambo 2 toys, Terminator 2 toys, Alien toys, Predator 2 toys, Starship troopers toys, Blade toys, Demolition Man toys...

That was actually a complete lie. This video right here:
https://youtu.be/vY4CAIgxyok
is the ONLY footage that ever existed of the “original” cut, which was really just this showreel made to attract investors. What happened was Lawrence Kasanoff (the producer, director, screenwriter, co-creator, and voice of Cheasel T. Weasel) just wasn’t satisfied with that style for whatever reason and decide to move on to motion capture for which fucked everything up because he doesn’t understand how animation works.

I seriously don't understand why on Earth would you purposefuly choose a grotesque and disgust inducing artstyle like this when making a show aimed at children. It's not even just for specific scenes like those close-ups in Spongebob or to emulate a certain convention like in Flapjack, or to make something that's supposed to feel edgy and rude, they just decided they want it to be like that seemingly without any good reason.
Like, I know this is a subjective matter to an extent, but I'm willing to bet that vast, vast majority of people would find it disgusting

Ironically, the peak of this wasn’t even made by Hannah-Barbera. Brady Kids had FOUR wacky animal sidekicks.
>Mop Top, a whistling shaggy dog (note: the Bradys already had a shaggy dog in the show named Tiger but by the time the cartoon came out they stopped using him because I think the dog actor got hit by a truck or something)
>Ping and Pong, pandas who were like a Chinese space experiment that crash landed by the Brady house and stuck around. Technically they were talking animals, but they only spoke Chinese gibberish.
>Marlon the mynah bird who could talk and was also a magic wizard who can do whatever the plot demanded. He flew around by spinning his tail feathers like a helicopter blade despite already being a fucking bird with wings, which honestly pisses me off every time I see it.

In fact that poster is the complete opposite of what the show was like. The show was super tame and just your average Spongebob type humor and wackyness. Canadian cartoons are made with taxpayer money as part of social programs to make sure that Canada’s animation industry isn’t overshadowed by the American one on their own networks. The thing is that, like with most social programs, the government doesn’t actually give a shit what happens within it as long as nothing creates too much controversy so you can pretty much just do WHATEVER as long as it’s not too egregious

>A classic Hollywood story involves Gene Simmons of Kiss. In the late ’90s, as co-owner of the Fox Family Channel, Saban was developing shows for children. Simmons, the fire-breathing, blood-spitting frontman of a rock band in costumes and face paint, pitched Saban an idea for a new Saturday-morning cartoon: Kiss meets X-Men, the Marvel comics superhero team. Saban liked the concept well enough to convene a meeting with Avi Arad, then C.E.O. of Marvel’s toy division.
>At the appointed time, Saban, Arad, and Simmons sat down. The meeting was going well, and the three began to haggle over numbers. Then Saban turned to Arad and, referring to Simmons, confided in Hebrew, “Now we gut him like a fish.” Without missing a beat, Simmons—who, unbeknownst to Saban, was born Chaim Witz in Haifa, Israel—replied in Hebrew, “You asshole. I’m one of you.”

Those were so much different times. Not a cartoon but in Poland in 60s one of popular books for kids featured adventurer/historical journalist with nickname "Mr Automobile" that would travel around with bunch of young boy scouts and, as one of them would declare, he was "not interested in girls". Back then everyone would think "oh, it's some story about a guy and his kid sidekicks", only now people would react weirdly.

Because 1) it makes for a better story, 2) it’d be REALLY funny if it was true and 3) Lawrence Kasanoff, who was like the main guy behind the project, was the one spreading it and he had enough pull to make sure that was the story everyone heard (fun fact, he was the producer for the first two MK movies and he was a producer for >>154700170). It was only years later that the behind the scenes guys who worked in the movie came out and said something like “Kasanoff’s full of shit actually. We only ever had about 7 minutes of animation done before he had us swap to mocap. I bet the original harddrives are still stored somewhere”. Also, another fun fact: the M&M people they dropped out because they were shown footage of the green M&M as a dude and then immediately lost all faith in the project.

I don't now about the stuff made in the ewarly 00s like Sumos, but the late 80s had a sort of Growwout fad among kids stuff where companies kept making gross looking toys and shows based around the popularity of Garbage Pail Kids. Nickelodeon really took to it, and this was a bit before Ren and Stimpy. TMNT also jumped on the gross stuff around 1991 or so and all the toys of that year were things like Muckman, Mutagen Man, and other grosser looking guys that never really appeared in the show.
