The steampunk itself basically just an extension of firebending letting them speedrun some elements of industrialization and cheat some fuel logistics.LoK is more like post-steampunk. Like, the goofy mechatanks in S1 could fit in a steampunk setting, but otherwise we're in the gasoline/diesel age by that point in the setting.

Meanwhile lots of fantasy things have steampunk elements in the peripheries and you barely pay it any mind as steampunk because it's otherwise not sheathing itself in the true steampunk aesthetic.Also the competition with cyberpunk (both "low life, high tech" genres hitting on themes of corporate greed and such) has only gotten more difficult as the real world is becoming more and more cyberpunk. So if you want to hit on the same themes, you have to have a particular enthusiasm for the Victorian era in order to choose steam over cyber.

Steampunk feels like a bunch of hats with goggles and gears glued on randomly to things. It doesn't feel Victorian, it feels way more Amazon and Temu crap from China. I remember this show Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century, it's more trying to be like Cyberpunk Sherlock Holmes. It wasn't very good.

For example, Tanya Grotter, the Russian Harry Potter rip off started off as a "parody" of the source material (really a rip off with minor changes in an ill-fated attempt to avoid copyright infringement suits) but by the third book, became its own thing entirely, with entirely different storylines, plot points and so on.

In later books, Baum simply forgot this rule, and characters freely roam a genuinely bright-green Emerald City without ever putting the glasses on at all. In Emerald City of Oz, the sixth book Anon says is a natural stopping point, Dorothy gets a magic, wish-granting belt but in subsequent stories, the belt's magic just doesn't do that anymore, likely because if a belt can grant any wish, Dorothy would just wish every problem to be solved.And that's not even getting into the spelling inconsistencies. >>154711992The Difference Engine is weird because of the weird writing process but it is still worth reading. It defined many of the tropes used by everyone later. Neuromancer is also a genre defining work, so it is worth reading for that reason alone. You might want to try smaller bites like Burning Chrome. There is also Neal Stephenson who also did a Steampunk book: Diamond Age. The /cyb/ FAQ has a few recommendations.
