I actually liked the initial idea of Surge. A knock off metal made by a knock off Dr. Eggman sounds neat. It'd make sense that since Surge is a knock off of Metal she'd never be as strong, so she'd try to overcome Sonic the same way he overcomes Metal, with the power of 'friendship'. Hence Kit.
I think the only fault is that they ended her with JUST kit. She should have tried to go further, steal the mind control shit, and try to make a disfunctional family to try copying all of Sonic. A mind broken hedgehog obsessed with her that she's become disgusted with, a brain dead lunk with incredible strength, ect. All trying to overcome Sonic with what she sees as the 'beneficial' aspect of sonic's relationships. They didn't push the concept far enough, And that's a good thing. The biggest problem with IDW is that they don't even know how to write most of Sonic's rivals, and then give him even more that amount to nothing in the end.

Knuckles straight up acts like Shadow now. Both the current story and Justice League 2 have him being a no nonsense asshole with a stick up his ass. He doesn't have to be stupid again, but you could at least give him a sense of humor or more open to his friends to go along with his pride in his strength or something.


Speaking of Shadow, he's a total joke now. I don't care that he's gruff and mean towards the others, but anytime he does anything in the comics, he jobs harder than any of his fights in Death Battle. If you're not gonna re-ignite the rivalry with Sonic in any meaningful way, or at least show him being badass, then they might as well just write him the fuck out. He's wasted here.

Surge and Kit should have been a one and done that ends in their death instead of Starline. The only reason Surge even exists is to just be a petty jab at Ken Penders, but at that point who fucking cares?

IDW would improve a lot if they A: Dropped most of the fan characters because they contribute nothing, and B: Make Shadow an antagonist again, or give him his own solo series again with Team Dark, because he only works best when he's either against Sonic or doing his own thing.

I think the writers and possibly the entire staff have trouble making anyone other than Sonic cool and important in their roles, because they see Sonic as the only character that's unrivaled in being the cool factor of the series and his rivals can't immate that since that might take the spotlight off of Sonic their pet mascot and favorite.

Shadow has to be a cold and stoic asshole who jobs and falls to Sonics coolness and Knuckles has to be a stupid ass stubborn moron who also jobs or falls to Sonics coolness.

The issue is that Sonic isn't really the kind of character that is equipped to have rivalries. Rival would require two characters competing in the same context and wanting success.
Sonic doesn't get competitive over a long term (like Vs Shadow, Sonic isn't motivated to improve to be better than Shadow) and even against his archnemesis Sonic can only typically treat his back and forth with Eggman as a game.

Excuse me for the wall of text. Actually, small correction on the timeframe: when I first wrote it, I said about 5 years ago, but looking back it was closer to 8 or 10 years ago. My bad.

Now, on to the point: please don't assume my statement implies there was no Tails porn before that point. That is not the case. However, before that period, /ss/ hentai was still kind of niche, or mostly hidden from public NSFW spaces in Western fandom circles, with most shotacon content still associated with yaoi.
But as /ss/ started becoming more mainstream (thanks to memetic mutation and more SFW stories with "soft" /ss/ elements), the amount of available content increased. Around the same time, there was a noticeable surge in Tails content from some of the most notorious Sonic porn artists, largely driven by repeated commissions from commissioners with basically infinite wallets.

Some artists who didn't normally draw Sonic started jumping on the trend for attention. It was also around those years that some of the biggest popularizers of Tails porn, like Bigdad, really started gaining notoriety.
These are all things I slowly put together after years of looking at Sonic porn. But I'm open to discussing it further. Maybe you frequented a space I didn't around 15 years ago that could add another piece to the puzzle.

Each Sonic Rival needs to confront Sonic in a way that makes him wrangle with notions he dislikes. Sonic doesn't like being tied down but also has too much strength and too much capacity to do good and fix problems.
Thus:
Metal should make him contend with his love of freedom. Lean into Metal punctuating the Order of an Empire (led by him or Eggy) in contrast to the Chaos of Sonic's freedom.
Knuckles should make him contend with duty and responsibility as one of the Chaos Emeralds' heroes. Lean back into making Knuckles a dutiful guardian and give him extreme, world-weary wisdom.
Shadow should make him contend with his selfishness and willingness to stay out of issues. Lean back into Shadow being a brooding stoic who does what he wishes without regard for explanations.
Surge should make him contend with what his image and existence in general invokes in others. Lean back into Surge wanting to remove Sonic and prove she's superior.
Sonic will never have good writing, but a man can dream.
