I've been reading Pattern Recognition by William Gibson and while it's not his best work for something written in 2002 it's remarkably prescient in how forum culture would evolve and subdivide even as platforms consolidated. I mention this because it centers around a niche subforum of a subforum dedicated to the study and dissemination of a strange series of periodically released anonymous film snippets, a massive body of work with no clear structure or intent that was nevertheless deeply compelling to those who followed it. The examination and understanding of this media consumes the main character, and is the main driving force of the plot. Her unerring dedication to her strange little forum reminded me of whatever the hell we've got going on here. I don't really have a moral to this anecdote.
