I suppose it's nice that there are stores that sell just comics, you can go there and find people who like comics guaranteed
But at the same time why is it that the only physical place I can buy comics now is from comic stores
Doesn't that exclude your customer base to people who already like comics
Is it a regional thing and they sell comics in normal stores in other parts of the country?

I don't get buying comics.

1. All comics are available for free online.
2. They depreciate in value.
3. They get worn out.
4. They take up space.
5. They're expensive.
6. They're considered a loser's hobby.
>>

The comic companies left the newsstands in the 90s because sales were going down and they had to reimburse returned copies. With the direct market, the retailer is stuck with any unsold or damaged issues.
>>
>>154703847
I looked into this because I wasn't sure how the fuck this is possibly sustainable
The late Diamond Distributors really liked direct-market because they didn't have to take unsold stock back, if a book didn't sell the retailers had to eat it, and since they controlled most of the market they got their way
I suppose that it's survived for 20-40 years it's not entirely braindead but I still don't understand why I can go into Wal-Mart and buy regular magazines and novels about horse firefighter romance or some shit but not comic books
How many new readers are replacing the former readers? I suppose if you were curious you could see a comic shop and decide to go there even if you aren't previously interested in comics

Nah, it's just nostalgia brain rot. It happened for comics too, but that's beginning to die down with the newer generations. Pokémon will die down to, but there's another 20 years before that happens.
>>
>>154703980
Magazines work the same way though. Whatever doesn't sell gets send back. You just have to rip the cover off and send it back, they don't even want the entire book. I guess magazine publishers found that a more sustainable practice than comics since they never stopped.
>>
From what i hear absolute batman and DC are hitting it out the park, also i imagine most comic shops have expanded into things like trading cards and hosting events for nerds to play card trpgs together.

people talk about there not being a place where people hang out anymore but comic book shops could be that place if you thiink about it
>>
>>154703915
>They depreciate in value
Yes and no. Absolute Batman #1 is selling for like $500 in mint condition. D'Orc is still around $100 on ebay. Savage Dragon 280, that just came out 2 weeks ago, is selling for $120 currently. Those are just examples from the last year and a half. You understand this attracts gamblers/flippers like Pokemon cards do? Some people also want to actually own the art.

>t's just nostalgia brain rot
Some of those 90s speculation comics people thought were worthless are actually gaining in value. On one hand, pic related really shouldn't be worth as much as it is because it was a really large print run and doesn't have the actual scarcity of a 1960s Amazing Spiderman. But it does have scarcity in that there are more buyers than copies that are still in good condition because people who were too young/not born yet in the 90s want it now.
>>
>>154701386
>How many of those new people are making pull lists
Who cares? Why would they even need to know what that is?
All they need to do is walk in, browse the shelves, grab a couple that look neat and aren't already halfway through a series they hadn't started, and go their merry way.
>>
>>154703980
Jim Shooter wrote a pretty good blog entry about it https://jimshooter.com/2011/11/comic-book-distribution.html/

>they had to reimburse returned copies
I've never understood why this is a business model. Does your average 7-11 get to return any other type of unsold inventory?
>>
>>154700916
Retard
>>
>>154704599
It was to encourage more retailers to actually stock comic books because then they wouldn't bear the financial risk of holding a big pile of unsold inventory. This game comics a longer reach, being sold in more places, and (at first) meant the publisher got more money than if they would insist the retailers bear all the risks of the inventory itself. Retailers, naturally, don't want to buy something they fear might not sell; their gross margins are usually slim enough at the best of times, so they need to be discriminating buyers. This incentive made selling comics less-risky.

This is cherry picking. Yeah, people want the comic that featured the first appearance of Deadpool and Domino to display on their shelf and are willing to pay...$275 for a graded copy from 1991?

Think about that for a moment. 35 years, and all you turned $50 (purchase, grading, and free shipping) into $275.

And it's not like these are selling like lemonade either. You have a ton of them sit on eBay for years until a sucker clicks "buy now".

Then you have longboxes that sell for $5.

it's blown past 2010s levels. the market has expanded substantially. don't listen to comicsgaters, they're basically trying to manifest a 90s crash out of impotent rage and the only publisher at any risk of that in the near future is Marvel.
>>
>>154704698
Yes. more are worthless than not. But there are quite a few, like Spider-Man #1 1990 is another over produced speculation bubble comic that now sells for a lot.
>And it's not like these are selling like lemonade either
It depends. That one you posted sold today, I think it's pretty liquid at a fair price. Some people on ebay ask too much over market value. If you threw it in a Whatnot auction there would be a buyer.

DC was in a state of managed decline before Absolute gave them big boost, all it takes is that line to go bust without anything to replace it for them to get back into the same place.

Reading this it's a damn miracle they make comics at all
The part that stuck out to me was the defacto requirement that there be some sort of National Distributor to finance these books
Independent News distributed other magazines as well, ANC did a lot of books
The blurb about retailers not bothering to carry comics then might explain my availability question, I'm not sure HOW true that is in the modern era but it would make sense
Can comic books only be sustainable by having the publisher be part of some ungodly conglomerate to finance the damn things?
>>
My local shop does very well, even before the Absolute DC boom. I know what separates a good shop from a bad shop in terms of success
>>
>>154705024
nah, DC's regular books are also selling plenty. losing Absolute would be a huge hit, but the rest is still more than sustainable without it. at the rate the market is growing there's actually a good chance that Marvel is making MORE money despite LOSING marketshare.

It’s such a train wreck that it’s honestly more entertaining to read about than the actual comics themselves nowadays.

…at least in the past, that train wreck was one of everyone huddled in a shitty apartment and trying to do their best. Now it’s mostly retarded Twitter fights.

Which is gonna crash first, the comicsgate/fandom menace/outrage youtube market or the comics market
>>
>>154704274
Magazines are in their deathtroes though. The way many managed to hold on is to go seasonal rather than monthly, or shift to broad themed cheap coffee table books. The magazine market keeps wanting more expensive pricing ,which is contrary to what comics need and hasn’t really worked with modern attempts at chasing the $10 Magazine market. Archie digests have also died recently.
>>154705030
Stores in general don’t want magazine format prints(including floppies) in general unless they have a high yield and guaranteed returns. Magazine racks are barely a thing in stores anymore, it’s down to a handful of notable publications, in the 90’s you would have a massive variety of magazines coming and going.
Stores carrying floppies (or even 100 page comic anthologies in magazine format) would be downwind of that. And they really aren’t brining in new mags.

Nope, just as I thought.
>>
Do your LCS have a lot of back issues? I always imagined the stereotypical comic store as having a pretty small 'current issues' section and mostly being stacks of back issues. Most 'comic stores' I've been to lately have had pretty disappointing selection, to speak nothing of TPBs.

My ideal store would specialize in older collections/trades because those are some of the hardest things for me to find these days.
>>
>>154703847
They sell them at Dollar Tree too.
>>
>>154705563
Anecdotally (the best kind of evidence) where I work we do still stock magazines at the checkout line, mostly tabloids and People Magazine. It seems every week they've discovering new letters from Lucille Ball
I don't know if we have the Archie digests but we have Archie something where we used to put our local shitty newspaper (which is very dishonest even for a modern newspaper, but this is /co/), might be the crossword puzzle books
Probably a decade ago they had this huge rack of magazines that used to have Nintendo Power, but I think the only comic related thing it had was the Papercutz Nick Magazine, that's all I remember
Walmart does have the big magazine rack, next to the aforementioned horse firefighter romance books
>>
>>154705743
My stores are 90% toys, merch and Otaku shit now. Before a bunch of them went out of business I'd say they used to be 25% new issues, 40% back issue long boxes, 20% trades, and 15% model kits.

No shit but this is more about the industry which can die. Of course a medium will never truly be dead since people can make indie stuff.
>>
>>154705851
> It seems every week they've discovering new letters from Lucille Ball
That’s exactly what I mean, magazines these days are more likely to be $15 special interest features on specific subjects-The Beastles, Lucille Ball, The doors, basically people of interest to older people who might buy these magazines. Not really serial features or something that requires customers to keep coming back.
>>154705905
The last books a million here closed a few months back. Sad, it was my nephews favorite store in the mall.
Nintendo power was also discontinued well over 10 years ago now. 2012 to be exact. So you’re remembering something from over 15 years ago in the latter story
>>
>>154706379
Then the industry SHOULD die. If it is too big to fail, it is too big to exist.
>>
Investing in cardboard is so dumb. Those people don't realize the streamers are manipulating the market worse than Trump is manipulating oil with the war. No laws against all the abuses you can do with real stock market actions. And when a game stops, your cardboard value immediately goes to zero.
It's weird nobody took notice of how comic speculation doesn't work to begin with, as in the value of those collections isn't real, and selling anything at their value for cash is long and hard and usually requires a nouveau riche imbecile to scam.

Not to poop on the parade, but these anecdotes show survivor bias.
This is the industry finding a new equilibrium. Weak stores died out, and strong stores absorbed their former customers. This gave them a boost, but things will eventually return to mean, and the trend line will continue to go downward.
The pure comic shop may never actually die a complete death. But if the trend line does not reverse, then it will be a little sadder, a little smaller, and a little more irrelevant with each passing year. The resilient ones will be the big fish in a shrinking pond.
>>
>>154705486
comicsgate, easily.

you can only keep a grift going for so long. even if you never lose your core conspiratards, the more obvious it becomes that your core arguments are completely delusional, the harder it is for you to grow - and you'll start bleeding off slightly more reasonable people until the only ones left are the similarly delusional. trying to walk back their delusions will lose their support, so you're stuck in a ratchet of increasingly delusional positions whether you believe them or not.

your "community" of "fans" is only there to hear you to tell them their delusions are correct, so you escaping your delusions and being honest and earnest is punished severely.

it looks less like collapse and more like a slide into irrelevance and loss of any social clout, which is already happening.

Comicsgate declined hard due to three factors
>Books not coming out on time
>In-fighting drama
>The industry genuinely improved while they got worse
Comics are less sensationalized now than they were a decade ago
Sure we had the GFM fiasco last year but it was quickly dealt with and moved passed
A lot of the people who got into comics circa 2019 and onwards don't care about comicsgate
They weren't there when you had Chelsea Cain trying to deliberately piss people off or were around when EVS was still a somewhat respected figure in comics.
You can only spam the same sensationalist click bait until people start to question why do these supposed non-biased sources deliberately choose NOT to cover something like Absolute Batman or Energon Universe Transformers.

i originally had something about that "delusion ratchet" leading to an increased risk of infighting over time in that post (because the concentration of insane people who are impossible to cooperate with or trust just keeps going up), but cut it because it seemed a bit out of scope.

the mechanisms that slowly, but inevitably, push insane creatives out of real creative industries just don't exist for something with an extremism ratchet like that - not least because such a ratchet creates a great "second chance" for unrepentant crazies to latch on to. the communities they build aren't ones that buy Isom to read it, they buy it to protest something else.

at the end of the day for Isom to be successful it has to be worth buying for more people than just an insular protest crowd. a protest's momentum is initially strong but rapidly fades out over time unless outside events continue to fuel it. a fandom has slower momentum at the start but can hit exponential critical mass and takes something that is continuously and catastrophically bad (e.g. GoT season 8) to kill. a protest "fandom" will die on its own, an actual fandom can sustain itself for a very long time on its own.

that doesn't even mention how crippling to fandom building the hostility of such a protest "fandom" is. say you're a genuine Isom fan for the story and characters - if other self-proclaimed Isom fans are constantly raking you over the coals for pulling a couple Absolute books you're also enjoying, where are you supposed to go to talk about your enjoyment of Isom? their toxicity will make it more difficult for you to enjoy Isom almost regardless of how good Isom is or isn't, because they aren't fans of Isom, they're ideologues for the statement they believe Isom is making. their "fandom" is just a purity test.

>“Gen Z does not care about superhero movies,” noted one studio head. “That genre belongs to millennials.”
https://deadline.com/2026/02/teens-masculinity-onscreen-survey-1236735260/
>Less Doctor Strange and more Dr. Robby.

>That’s what Gen Alpha and Gen Z want to see onscreen, according to the most recent “Teens & Screens” survey from the Center for Scholars & Storytellers at UCLA.

>The annual report found that kids and young adults ages 10-24 prefer to see onscreen portrayals of “fathers enjoying parenting” or “fathers showing love to kids” by a 5 to 1 margin vs. those who wanted to see less of those dynamics.

>For years, creators and executives have “operated under the assumption that young male audiences prefer, or at least expect, stoic, independent male heroes.” Thus, the glut of superhero films centered around one lone warrior (or a group of such people) saving the entire world. The Teens & Screens survey indicates otherwise.

Funkopops, the latest fortnite-ified crossover MtG set, Labubus, those gooey gel toys that tiktok subhumans go nuts over. No comic or game shop in the country is keeping its lights on strictly by selling floppies and only floppies.

The proliferation of slot machines at every bar, laundromat, gas station, and anywhere else they can cram the damned things, in addition to "prediction markets" taking off would have me believing that there is a very intentional effort to bankrupt every American. Scalping and other "get rich quick" rackets like NFT and crypto meme shitcoins were also pretty successful at sucking the money out of the pockets of desperate wagies.

Even if it's not a shadowy conspiracy perpetrated by the Amerisraeli Illuminati-Mason alliance, the purpose of a system is what it does, and the system is encouraging people to gamble, scalp, and bet their future on any and all grifts that come their way.

you killed it here. Calling any hobby a "loser's hobby" speaks more about your own pathetic life than what any person is feeling about the hobby in question. I buy my comics to read them and appreciate the art. Now what the fuck are you gonna do about it?

No they're not.

It's the Absolute line or nothing. Why? Because people don't want to read the same Superman stories where nothing ever happens over and over again.

The Absolute Universe is a developing universe.

Uhh...
>>
>>154716736
funny how you leave out that they include all the major American comics publishers as well

and the fact that Tokyopop is actually an American company

they specifically segment out manga in their genre analysis - the growth of manga market share is because at the moment it is (slightly - 8% CAGR vs 7.1% CAGR) outpacing the overall growth of the industry as it expands into a market that hasn't yet hit saturation, not because it's taking someone's lunch. but comicsgaters need to believe that the pie is stagnant or shrinking because their whole worldview about comics relies on the assumption that American comics simply MUST be failing because of woke or whatever.

unfortunately for them this simply isn't the case.

Actual comic shop employee here.
We've been seeing similar sales growth. While yes, the majority of our profit still comes from our strong MtG playerbase, we have been selling more and more comics over the past year.
Absolute is the big seller obviously but DCKO sold pretty well too, way better than Dark Crisis.
Beneath the Trees also flew off the shelves when that was coming out.

>>154716874
7.1% raw dollar growth over 2021-2024 might not even be outpacing inflation, depending on how they calculated it. Given the whole summary reads like an AI hallucination it's hard to say. I'm not going to give them money for the report.
Does anywhere actually publish the numbers of books sold these days? I can't find data newer than 2023.
>>
>>154717089
CAGR is compound annual growth rate. it's the year-over-year term.
>>
>>154700498
If that were even remotely true then how come comic book sales aren't at an all time high?
>>
>>154700730

>cope and seethe
I'm not sure where you're seeing the cope and seethe.
I'm not saying any of this stuff with glee. I once worked on the publishing side of things about 2 decades ago, and have known many comic shop owners. This isn't something I want to see, and politics has nothing to do with it.
Surviving comic shops are enjoying a small boom due to less local competition, dollar sales increases seem to match rising floor prices, and comic sales have not been in step with inflation. So they have good pricing power with existing readers. Great, but that doesn't last.

This has been an argument since before Ovid anon. There are greek paintings that portray Medusa as a beautiful woman punished.

>For years, creators and executives have “operated under the assumption that young male audiences prefer, or at least expect, stoic, independent male heroes."
And they still do, the problem is that the west every since the 2010's has become an estrogen factory that produces lame emasculated male leads that refuse to kill that no boy would root for.
Gen z and below are just more aware aware of this because they saw what happened to their millennial counterparts
