It is absolutely surreal to me that Martian Manhunter is outselling Spider-Man nowI know Disney hardly pays attention to the comic books but good Lord
Absolute Cringe
>>154701732>It is absolutely surreal to me that Martian Manhunter is outselling Spider-Man nowBy absolute coincidence Marvel just fired its EiC
How in the fuck are there still spider cucks that buy enough of that slop to put it in the top 10. It's been shit for decades.
>>154702051Actually the comic is now mostly read by Mileschads and Paulchads looking for a laff at Peter.
>>154702051Because each issue will be worth millions someday :D
>>154702051And? So had every other comic like batman up there. People buy what they want regardless of quality.
>>154702051Fuck off retard.
>>154701807Every fucking thread. Mods ban this faggot.
>>154702051The real thing is that comic sales in general are just so assfuckingly pathetic in number that limping along on Spider-nostalgia is enough to make top 10 regularly without too much effort by selling like 80k issues when everyone else barely sells 70k.It's not that Spider-man sells well, it's that everything in general sells so fucking badly that the tiny boost from Spider-branding is enough to put it in the top 10 consistently.
>no comichron data for Martian Manhunter 1988 but it was only a 4 issue mini so it probably sold like shit>60 Martian Manhunter 1 (1998) 40,533>56 Martian Manhunter 1 (2006) 41,185>69 Martian Manhunter 1 (2015) 36,581>41 Martian Manhunter 1 (2018) 39,312What did DC do right this time?
>>154702312That was true 2-3 years ago but Absolute Wonder Woman and Superman still get past 100k per Snyder so bare minimum Spider-man is around 100k too.
>paying 5 dollars per issue>paying 5 dollars for "what if batman but poor and gym bro?">paying 5 dollars to watch peter parker bullied>doing every month while mangaslop is cheaper and offers cool fantasy worlds with male protagonists isekai'd in boobyland
>>154701732You might say people are..."All-In" on DC.
>>154701732Spiderman has been shit for so long it deserved to be canceled a decade a go. This is just deserts.
>>154702385This time it's good
>>154702312>>154702501Comic sales are twice as high as they were in 2019 due in no small part to comic books being good now
>>154702581>comic books being good now/co/ does not seem to agree, but maybe /co/ would like to time travel back to the 1980s
>>154702581Good luck keeping them that high. It's like watching a person taking 10 steps backward, 1 forward, then another 2 forward after 7 years.
>>154702051Gotta have my Spidey
>>154702581>twice as highSo...still within 80s cancellation number range?
>>154702581What are the numbers
>>154701732>I know Disney hardly pays attention to the comic booksWhy the fuck do you think they're moving Marvel to Los Angeles now? Disney is noticing that Marvel Comics are losing money and want to fix that shit ASAP.
>>154702051Gotta have my Amazing Spider-Man
>>154702710Well I'm sure California will fix all the problems Marvel is having lol
>>154702557Ostrander's Martian Manhunter was better written than Camp's. The new series is being carried entirely by the art.
>>154702051Aging collectors gottahavemyspiderman gave them a big buffer between retarded actions/treatment and consequences.Issues is that they are aging, they are dying and young people are alienated by the bizarre place that the BND crew have brought Spider-Man to.
>>154703022The cope is that Disney is so old-fashioned that they still cling to the Hollywood model that an execuative needs to be visting or capable nof visiting a studio or team.
>>154702647Honestly?Comics as a fandom is more active now than it was a decade agoA combination of Absolute DC, Invincible's adaptation, mass online piracy with decades worth of work scanned and ripped, Marvel Rivals, etc did the trickSome aspects more than other's sure but it's been pointed out multiple times that while /co/ is declining hard, comics fandom has been more alive on other platforms
>>154703206I hope they put whoever was in charge of the new Moana and Snow White in charge
>>154703177Young people are alienated by eighty year continuity in general. Absolute is flying of the shelves because you're on the front row of something new and interesting instead of follow ups to what Ray Balmer or whoever wrote about Electro's divorced dad before you were born
>>154703225>/co/ is declining hard, comics fandom has been more aliveMight be a causality
>>154703225But Brevoort said Rivals doesn't matter when it comes to interest in the characters?;)
>>154703247It's honestly one of the least important carriers Not everyone who mains Luna Snow is gonna actually read the very few comics she does appear inI heard it did cause a drive in interest but I wouldn't be surprised if it was like the MCU's where it just fizzled out and that the dissonance between characters depictions makes the source material (or Rivals) look unappealing
>>154703238man are people going to be upset 3 years from now when the entire absolute universe is going to be used as canon fodder for whatever retarded DC event is happening that year.
>>154701732Dan Didio was a captain who stubbornly steered through rocksMarvel is driven consistently by captains who steer through rocks at wellJim Lee is a captain who doesn't steer at all which makes the boat hit rocks anyways but if they just so happen to be out of the way, the boat is safe
>>154703299I'd rather the Absolute universe just end and then something new happens
>>154703314Marvel is driven by captains who steer through rocks by design, and say it's a vocal minority feeling impacts.
>>154703238>Young people are alienated by eighty year continuity in general. There's 20-something year olds on Twitter actually reading old comics from the 60s to the 90s and talking about them and comic shops prior to Absolute/Energon/Ultimate 2020 were talking about how there was more interest in back issues, even from young readers. I think the idea that young people are alienated by eighty year old continuity is falling into the same copium trap that corporations do where they make bad decisions that fuck everything up.
>>154701807fpbp
>>154703472Yeah I'm in my twenties, it's not continuity keeping me from reading modern Spider-Man. Any question I could have is a search for an answer away, not locked in some wet-box at the back of the LCS. You can read hundreds of issues in very little time, binging content when you get the itch is the norm.I view everything after #500 as fanfiction with a stamp, resurrecting an era I was done and bored with and letting it linger like a rotting fish. Every year regressing the characters who used to be written FAR better and with more depth than they are now.
Batman and Superman outselling Wonder Woman as always.
>>154703562Wonder Woman is better than Superslop and should outsell it
>>154703472I think part of that stems from howA. They're getting into comics after a decade plus of effort was done to make reading orders B. They're getting into comics after all that has been archivedGranted, they're still a minority and a significant amount of them aren't even Americans It's kind of telling you can recognize the difference in opinions between them and the old fandom is partially out of the latter having to rely on back issues that may or may not be available to them when they were young
>>154701732
>>154703126 Have you consider that maybe you have terrible taste?
>>154703225>A combination of Absolute DC, Invincible's adaptationThis point is what makes me doubly interested in how the Absolute Batman adaptation will play out. If DC manages to do a home run with it it could really make massive waves.
>>154703238I don't even think it's a young people thing. Any readers who would have wanted to read something DC but didn't want to have to consider the massive backlog of the decades that came before had an actual place of entry with Absolute. That's a big point in the run's favor.
>>154703562I'm surprised she managed to hit top 10. Even with the Absolute label buff.
>>154701947And I'm sure that recycling another corpse from Brand New Day is the answer. The fact that they got Wacker basically confirms that Marc Guggenheim will follow Kelly, and then Bob Gale, and then another 10 years of Slott. Surely, this is the injection of new blood and fresh ideas that will save Spider-Man.
>>154704379Ostrander was an excellent and acclaimed writer. Absolute MM isn't any better written than Camp's Ultimates or Ultimate Endgame, it just has better art.
>>154704479It'll do well but not as well as people think it'll perform in getting people into comics It's not even necessarily solely on the grounds that Batman is so ubiquitous that people already know whether they like the character or not but also simply because the people who get into comics thanks to adaptations are always a minority of the people who bothered to read the source material who are a minority of people who enjoyed the adaptation to begin with. How many people got into comics other than Scott Pilgrim after reading Scott Pilgrim? How many people read Kirkman's other comics or Image comics in general after reading Invincible? You could point to plenty of examples and personal anecdotes but it's always gonna be diminishing returnsAbsolute Batman (if the show is good) will get new readers A minority of which will read other Absolute BooksMinority of that will get into mainline DC (or just stick to Elseworlds)And a minority of that will read anything else
>>154704605>Marc Guggenheim will follow Kelly, and then Bob Gale, and then another 10 years of Slott. Surely, this is the injection of new blood and fresh ideas that will save Spider-Man.That route would end prematurely in Marvel Comics just getting rolled up and the IP selling its license to make comics to third parties. They NEED to expand beyond collectors, but everything they do is anathema to young person fan engagement. You know what gets engagement and discussion online? Romance. Which they are fucking abysmal at.
Figure I'll just ask here, was this worth reading?
>>154704981It was okay enough as a follow-up. The decision to use a different artist for every issue because Tim Sale died wasn't the best one.
>>154704757 It's funny because the one thing I hear a lot about Absolute MM is that the art is terrible:>>154688823I like it, and find it very creative as it is used as a medium, but I don't think "It is just that the art is good" is much of an argument. It's something actually, different, interesting; different enough that actually does what Absolute said it was going to do "try new thing with old character" without being absolute garbage like Green Lantern. Ostrander's run MM is not that interesting, it has nothing to really make it worth much for anybody not into the character already, or into comics of its type. But, if it is easier to just claim people are dumb and fooled by the art, than to accept that maybe you are not actually an expert on know what is isn't good, then do that.
>>154704981NoIt really revealed how much Sale was clearly willing to push back against Loeb because when the series starts properly there's almost double the narration
>>154705053>taking some troll post at face valuePulido's storytelling is a cut above the vast majority of the industry. Good art elevates mediocre comics, it's always been that way.Ostrander's run was very poignant. Most people want to buy loud, dumb crap instead, the top ten throughout the decades has been consistent about that.
>>154701732>60+ year old superhero x9>licensed shitComics will never be good, will they?
>>154701732The last two Spider-Man movies made over a billion and the upcoming one surely will as well. Why would Disney and Marvel care about how DC is performing in regards to comics when they have an absolute lock on media that people actually consume like movies, television and video games?
>>154701732The Absolute Universe is just the Snyderverse. That's why it's selling.
>>154705586You're retarded but it does make me wonder why DC has never cashed in and just continued the Snyder universe as a comic book
>>154705567>Why would Disney and Marvel care about how DC is performing If they didn't, they wouldn't have been pushing out the upper management of Marvel as they're doing now
>>154705612Lee and some others may be willing to go with making a comic continuation of Zack Snyder's universe, but I think WB doesn't want them to
>>154701732ugh
>>154703238>Absolute is flying of the shelves because you're on the front row of something new and interestingNo, you're sitting in a cuckchair watching your favorite childhood and youth characters get raped by incompetent, edgy retards like Snyder, Aaron, Lemire, and others, and you're enjoying it because you're a closeted faggot. Absolute Universe is exactly that.
>>154707471Cope, unc
>>154702385>What did DC do right this time? You do realize that, other than Absolute Batman and #1 issues of Batman, Spider-Man, X-Men, and Superman, no modern comic sells above 50,000 copies in 2026? ASM used to sell 48,000 copies last year, now it's selling 2 times worse than that. At best, AMM is probably selling about 24,000–25,000 copies.
>>154707564Yeah but they're virtually free to make since you just have to pay the writer and artist who are each making MAYBE $100,000 a year
>>154702278If it doesn’t count as spamming/flooding idk what does
>>154702051I have the same exact thought. They look like kiddy comics
>>154702246Batman’s actually decent tho
>>154702385I think enough people have come to appreciate Martian Manhunter from the cartoons. The same generation that grew up with the DCAU has now come of age, and can actually buy comics now. I think that’s the reason for the rise of comic sales in the last decade
>>154708313I know it's what got me interested.Of course then you hit a wall of what you saw animated, and how comics actually are. Going from Spider-Man TAS to now is like being told to bite into rotting fish. No thanks.
>>154701807Fpbp
>>154702468>paying 5 dollars for "Batman but he's antifa's wet dream"Ftfy
>>154702710Oh, the comics have been losing money for decades but now, suddenly, Marvel wants to try and fix them. Sure bucko.

>>154702385Be carried by the Absolute brand and amazing art. It being Vertigo-esque with an established character helps since people still whine about Vertigo and then not read any of that line's books that come out every few years.Quite frankly DC needs to do more self contained 6-12 issue Absolute books with B-D listers. They kept introducing them in the established series and blowing their load with them.
I genuinely don't understand how so many fags like Camp. Guys like him, Ewing, and Snyder are just embarrassing to read
>>154708734If they’re embarrassing to read, what does that tell you about marvel
>>154708556They’re already doing that>firestorm>deadman>Zatanna>Batwoman>Bizzaro>EtriganHaven’t read batwoman or Zatanna, but deadman and firestorm have been great
>>154701807The butthurt Tom Brevoort has arrived
>>154708556>>154709181Missread, didn’t catch the “absolute” part. M’bad
>>154708556It's really smart to flesh out the Absolute line with miniseries based on B-tier or below heroes, while keeping the mainline small but easier to manage with ongoing A-tier heroes. And, is a miniseries breaks out, you can upgrade with more issues or promote to ongoing.
>>154709203You could risk watering down the line that way
>>154705473Neck yourself gwenschizoid
>>154707471Hi Dan Didiot
Tom Brevoort is dead as a doornail when it comes to the EiC replacement. For the unawares, he was basically de facto creative EiC at Marvel and used Cebulski as a patsy.
>>154708313The generation that grew up with the DCAU are in their 30s and 40s now. These are kids who maybe watched Justice League Action.>>154708556The people who whine about Vertigo just miss the zeitgeist of edgy late 80s-00s comics and that's never coming back.>>154709138Two of those guys came from Marvel.

>>154711225The particular company doesn't really matter in most cases. Both companies have heavy-handed editorial.
>>154711770Loeb's DC is still more tolerable than his Marvel.
>>154708367Because basically anyone who unironically uses "Antifascist" to describe themselves or someone else positively is ironically just an actual fascist that has yet to successfully seize power.

>>154712328So like do they pay you faggots or do you volunteer?
>>154712448He does it for free.
>>154711980Loeb's only good books are the ones carried by Sale's art, which he did for both companies. The rest of his DC work is as stupid as his Marvel work.
>>154712529I thought people liked his Batman/Superman.
>>154708391That’s what rightoids do by calling anyone they disagree with trannies and communists thoever
>>154702051Did you think "GOTTA HAVE MY SPIDEY" was hyperbole? No, they are genuinely mindbroken.
>>154714506It was retarded. The long-running President Luthor subplot ends with him going crazy and injecting Kyrptonite, a substance that gave him cancer and cost him his hand and nearly his life, directly into his bloodstream. The Supergirl arc ends with Superman beating Darkseid into submission, a scene that made Morrison so mad he started plotting Seven Soldiers/Final Crisis right there and came up with Lady Styx with the 52 group as a villain for other writers to use instead of Darkseid whenever a story needed some powerful world conquering alien.
>>154714952I hate that it’s always the same recycled shit over and over. Always gotta have kryptonite involved somehow. Or the same villains doing the same shit hoping this time it’s different. Like damn nigga come up with some new shit. How are we still recycling stuff from 50 years ago
>>154702051Spider-Man, Batman and X-Men all have those insane die-hard fans who'll just keep buying forever no matter how bad things get, no matter how much Spider-Man is cucked and humiliated, no matter how much Batman is shamed for being a rich white male, no matter how much the X-Men become the de facto villains of Marvel and no matter obvious they make it that the old 80s-90s X-fags aren't the target audience anymore, those guys will just keep reading forever. But all of these books do have more casual audiences that wax and wane depending on who's working on the book and whether the current run is getting good word of mouth. So it's no an expected given that Amazing Spider-Man will always be a top ten book, or that it will always be one of Marvel's best selling titles, there've been periods of years and years where neither of those things was true. ASM being the #8 book and the only Marvel book above it being an #2 of a relaunch title isn't that unusual, it's just DC dominating the top 10 so much that's unusual.
>>154701732icv2's data is usually more kind to marvel than Prana, which has 2x the stores. Because Prana gives out sales ratios we can also estimate the order amount for May's top 10 using the numbers from Green Arrow and Ben 10 as anchors
>>154715217>Spider-Man, Batman and X-Men all have those insane die-hard fans who'll just keep buying forever no matter how bad things get, no matter how much Spider-Man is cucked and humiliated, no matter how much Batman is shamed for being a rich white male, no matter how much the X-Men become the de facto villains of Marvel and no matter obvious they make it that the old 80s-90s X-fags aren't the target audience anymore, those guys will just keep reading forever. When a book pisses off its audience for a long time what's left is basically completionist collectors and variant collectors. The latter is less likely to be reading it. And even then Marvel can't rely on them alone because it'll eventually run into problems. People forget that the X-Men comics fell to the 40,000s in the 2010s. That would've been unthinkable back in the 90s.
>>154715426Prana's sales ratios + the math
>>154715443Bonus: This is completely out of my ass but if we assume that ASM ships the same exact amount of copies every month for the reason >>154715217 outlined, we can also attempt to estimate every months top 10 using asm as the anchor
>>154715426300,000 a month for ANY comic book is fucking crazy

>>154701732why
>>154717130Why not?
>>154715426>>154715426Thank you comic sale autism anon.I wish they had ratios for later books because I'm really curious how the #50-150 ranked books are selling because before with comichron they would usually be around 15k-40k with the 15-20k being the sales cancellation level (barring events/crossovers that would take over the top 10-20 books). But with there being so many high sellers due to retailer exclusives/blind bags/absolute hype/events/etc I'm curious if the more reliable mid tier sellers (25k-40k) are being pushed down the list. Ie JSA/Nightwing/Batgirl. LIke Nightwing #34 and #35 were 55 and 56 in units with 29k for both but Nightwing #139 was 73 last month, and the 70s ranking back in 2017/2028 were around 25-29k. And with DC not relaunching his book after Taylor or kicking Watters off to increase sales, that means Dick is either still selling around the same (mid to late 20k) like he has for like 25 years and DC is content with that or he's selling a little bit more than expected compared to past rankings & sales.
>>154719088Yeah we really need the ratios for top 50 (and ideally 100), especially since there's much more competition in the rankings now with the absolute books and indies. If I use asm as the baseline like it's the big mac index, sales in 2026 are 52% higher than in 2019 (asm vol 5 #28 sold 67k vs my 102k estimate for vol 7)
>Ben 10 outsold ASM>no one cares about this milestoneAny chance that it's leaving the Top 10 in the next month? Great achievement for Dynamite by the way
>>154720904It got up there by using blind bags. Of course it's going to drop like a rock unless they keep using the blind bags.
>>154701732I find Absolute to be cringe, but it hurts Marvel so that's good.
