Post examples of awful retcons. Here's one:>In the season 3 premiere of Rick and Morty, Rick is interrogated within his own brain to reveal his backstory and the formula for interdimensional travel. What follows is a cliché backstory about a villain killing his family and him being motivated to develop interdimensional travel to get revenge. As it immediately turns out, Rick didn't actually show them a memory but simply imagined a backstory that contained a way for him to escape his captors and we were given plenty of reason to know this was a fake backstory, like an explanation of the distinction between memory and imagination along with the alleged inability to alter memory.>Go forward to the season 5 finale and that dumb cliché backstory is suddenly 100% real somehow with no explanation for how any of things that showed it to be fake were actually a mislead. Nevermind that when that was first shown, it was clearly meant to be a joke about sad backstories and how it didn't really make for character either, from that point on you're just kind of expected to ignore all of that and just take it seriously.
>>154703349You know you could have just say you wanted a rick and morty thread
>>154703349He made up the part about running after him right after and writing all of that on the floor. Instead he got checked out by doctors, drank and them went portaling after Rick Prime. Rick is an unreliable source, just because he said ‘totally made up backstory’ doesn’t mean it all completely was.
>>154703349>>154703384Pinkie Pie is not an amish. She made it the fuck up and idiots took it seriously and turned a fake backstory into a real one.It makes no sense for ponies to be amish, let alone for a pink non-adopted pony to be raised on a rock farm by grey ponies. There are no such as the amish in a world about magic.
Wabadadubdub
>>154703384that's an excuse for why it *could* have happened, hence a retcon. It's an awful retcon because it turns Rick into the exact kind of generic interchangeable crybaby backstory character the story was eschewing.
>>154703557>It makes no sense for ponies to be amish, let alone for a pink non-adopted pony to be raised on a rock farm by grey ponies. There are no such as the amish in a world about magic. That is the joke
>>154703405I agree, retconning the issue where Hal gets over the destruction of Coast City by immediately making him go crazy in the next issue was pretty bad.
>>154703557>Pinkie Pie is not an amish. This was an excellent way to start your post because it signaled to me the rest wouldn't be worth reading, so that is where I stopped
>>154703384 I think OP is caring a bit too much about this, but no doubt whatsoever it wasn't meant, originally, to be his actual origin story / motivation; one must remember the authors admitted the original idea wasn't even for sure to follow "one single team of rick and morty" and more just "Rick and Morty do shit, it might be any Rick and Morty". Even your justification falls apart very easily by just asking "And why the fuck would he let all that 'real' origin story show for the random guy that invaded his mind?' Like all around, even if the word "recon" might be incorrect, depending on exact definition, it definitely wasn't indented as anything other than a Mulan Sauce joke. The idea of continuity and what not came from the fact this is a team written show, as the thing went from what it was to what it is, and the issue is that this kind of continuity makes it "popular" for people that like to come up with fan theories and what not. It's not as if it was ever hidden that at some point there was a major change on path for this show, as it was made into something that could be stretched indefinitely
>>154703405 They did him dirty and then tried to wash his face so hard.
>>154703349SotR wins the worst retcon award easily. What's especially bad about Kamp Koral's inclusion is that the spinoff itself would later be canceled. (Thank fucking god.)
>>154705412>SotR wins the worst retcon award easily.I haven't watched SOTR; What was the retcon?
>>154705441That everyone somehow all met at camp, while Mr. Krabs and Mrs. Puff were camp counselors. Don't forget the episodes in the main series where Narlene appears, they're some of the worst Nu-Bob has been in years.
>it's a plot point in S3 that portals require an internet connection. it's a plot point is S4 that portals bypass the need for internet connections.>S4 Bob has suddenly always been a pacifist, despite previously chomping at the bit to use weapons against infected binomes and outright trying to kill Megabyte>Matrix's entire character development is reset>Daemon's infected guardians completely change their look
>>154705689I'm sure whatever ReBoot did can't be anywhere near as bad as what Gameoverse will do in the future.
>>154705604>That everyone somehow all met at campWhat the fuck. Anyone who is even vaguely familiar with the character of Squidward would agree that he is nowhere near the same age range as SpongeBob and Patrick. SpongeBob and Patrick are very clearly teenagers or young adults while Squidward is very clearly an adult. What the fuck shit.>NarleneWho the fuck is Narlene?>GooglesOh now what the fuck
>>154703349I think this is the worst retcon of the 2010s CN cartoons and then they subtly retconned it again over the years.
>>154703349it just kinda sounds like you're retarded
>>154705710>No one: >Anon: "AND ANOTHER THING ABOUT GAMEOVERSE..."
>>154707154GV lifts ReBoot's premise, they're not entirely unrelated.
>>154703557>There are no such as the amishThis is a retarded non-point. You can look at Rarity's accent and say "there's no such thing as the Transatlantic accent, because there's no such thing as the Transatlantic." You can look at Appleloosa and say "there's no such thing as Appleloosa because there's no 19th century American frontier". You can look at Ponyville and say "there's no such thing as Ponyville, because there's no medieval European half-timbered thatched roof cottages". All of the characters speak English, even though the Anglo-Saxons never existed in this world. It's an inherent limitation of the fantasy medium
>>154707295NTA, but I used to live in a rural area with plenty of amish people. Hell, I even went to an amish store, and they tend to sell out-of-date food.
>>154707304WHY ARE YOU TELLING ME THIS
>>154707307I dunno, to save you from eating expired cereal? I seen some hot sauce that was 5 years out of date, and that had me concerned.
The show gets WORSE after season two?Why the fuck did it go from slice of life to Deepest Lore.
>>154707566I'm going to let you in on a little secret, it was ALWAYS a deepest lore show, even when Roiland was still involved.
>>154707584>I'm going to let you in on a little secret, it was ALWAYS a deepest lore show, even when Roiland was still involved.Talking about the OTHER show anon.. the one we can't mention by name
>>154707596Oh pfffft, mods don't care anymore. You can just say MLP:FiM. Supposedly I've heard each season was its own self-contained story.
>>154705412With how long it's running I'm not surprised considering that The Simpsons keep doing it too to either "stay fresh" or just asspull "new material" for an episode>>154705762What's the retcon?
>>154707607Honestly fuck that era of cartoons now everything has to have a poorly executed narrative. When will action cartoons come back
>>154707625In non-cape form? Seeing as how Ben 10 got dumbed down with each new show, it's not looking hopeful. Maybe that frog show Genndy's working on will be decent?
>>154707566Funnily enough, I've always said that R&M and FiM had similar lifespans.>2 seasons that are universally beloved, spawn tons of memes and fan content, and are considered a breath of fresh air>the creator and showrunner leaves/stops writing between seasons 2 and 3>season 3 has a metric fuckton of hype but is doomed to disappoint>show progressively gets worse>we're now at R&M season 9; FiM ended at season 9To be fair to FiM though, R&M's dropoff in quality was much faster and steeper
>>154707312You should be able to see the mold in that shit
Speaking of retcons...
>>154707745highly acidic foods don't normally get moldy
>>154707761I think anon's talking about the cereal. He's probably right, and I'm not sure how that store got away with selling such old food. Maybe it's because their meat is relatively fresh compared to everything else?
>>154707623>What is the retcon >Nicole's parents being dead>Richard, Nicole and the rest of adults being classmates.>Nicole's wedding dress>kid Nicole being a loser>young adult nicole still living with her parents>Richard wasting Nicole's saving buying a starAnd more.
>>154707566It gets worse after season 1, after season fucking 1. And it was always the deepest lore show since the first 2 minutes of the show with the moon and the sun.
>>154707747I'm vaguely recalling... this is about that stupid horseshit about them all being friends in HS, right? Did the writers forget the entire initial premise is that he'd just moved halfway across the world shortly before the series started?
>>154705689It was a weak season in general.
>>154711006Getting rid of Superboy and other Kryptonians was an absolute clusterfuck only exceed by bringing them all back
>>154709268Exactly.Even as a kid I went 'wait a minute, that's not right'
>>154703349>>154703580That's not how retcon works, anon. How fucking old are you?
>>154705412>>154705441>>154705604the spin-off series already revealed that to be a split timeline from the original
>>154711006I love bitchy Atlantean Peej though
>>154712239I do too, but that origin was more convoluted than it should've been
>>154711006I don't understand why they went out of their way to get rid of Supergirl and all other Kryptonians, but they just HAD TO keep Power Girl for some reason.
>>154714500DC considered her popular enough (and probably distinct enough/far enough removed from Superman and co) that she was worth keeping around, and Gerry Conway, her creator, apparently had a suitable idea for a reworked origin
>>154703837Given that DC editorial had to have some idea of what they wanted to do by then, letting the writer of the previous issue do a story where Hal just gets over it immediately just ends up looking really stupid.Even if they weren't planning on having Hal go crazy, having him just get over it that fast would still be stupid.>>154714500>but they just HAD TO keep Power Girl for some reason.Wait until you learn there were TWO reasons why they just HAD TO keep Power Girl.
>>154703405Hal is better having that hanging over him though
>>154707747What was the retcons is this, yo?
>>154716669My guess is anon's implying that "Rachelle" was a retcon.
>>154714996Hal saying "I'm fine." And then Not Being Fine is very in line with his character, and they probably could've had it display how messy a grieving process can be.They didn't. But they could have!
>>154716775No.>>154716669They altered how they met each other.
>>154716868They actually did Hal was using his ring to recreate Coast City and his long dead parents. Hal was about to have a breakthrough when the Guardians shut the whole thing down, denounced the whole thing as a blatant abuse of power, and demand Hal turn himself over to the Guardians so they can strip him of his ring and imprison him. Which caused him to snap. And that is on top of Hal and the JLE having several days worth of memories wiped after Arion arranged my magic pregnancy for Kara and tricking Hal/Kara into thinking that the baby was Hal's
>we need to push Inhumans because we don't have the movie rights to mutants>we got the rights back but now we have all these Inhumans around guess we don't need them anymore
>>154703349Rick just used his real backstory and mixed bullshit into it.Harmon hates canon. They claimed it was a fabricated origin story so they wouldn't be tied down to it later.
>>154717271It's crazy how hard that backfired. Sad part we might have avoided if they waited for the Marvels to come out and bomb. Feige forced them to align with the MCU only for the MCU to basically push Kamala under the same rock the Eternals and She-hulk are under.
>>154707584lol, no it wasn't. They never had a plan for Evil Morty or anything. They just do open-ended endings so they can bring back characters if they think of a good idea for them later.
>>154717680>They just do open-ended endingsOh okay, that explains why Season 3's premiere was a total copout.>lol rick was only SIMULATING prison life
>>154717349this. don't know why OP had to go on a rant.
>>154717530It'd be even better if the comics could just ignore the MCU and tell their own stories
Some of these are just cartoons being cartoons
>>154703349I hate the direction they brought Rick’s backstory but the family blowing up was clearly meant to be at least a little real.
>>154711448I don't envy the writers having to come up with new origins for them so that they're kind-of-but-not-really related to Superman. But there had to have been less convoluted solutions to the problems that arose from the 'Superman is the only Kryptonian' mandate
I think Rick and Morty should have ended after season 1 or 2 (plus the rickshank redemption). Everything else made afterwards is clearly written by writers that don't give a shit
>>154712027That's exactly how a retcon works. Retroactive. Continuity. When a story tells us one thing but then it's like: "Oh, no, it actually meant something else!" with no foreshadowing or clues that they were intentionally obscuring the planned truth.
>>154719943>Rick's backstory >planned lmfao, Harmon had NO IDEA where he wanted to take the show until he decided to latch onto that throwaway joke and have it define Seasons 6 onward
>>154703349this show is long dead
>>154720880no it ain't, people love season 9
>>154703557Holy shit were you the guy at Hearths Warming Club? Cause I was literally at a panel at that con where the people were trying to argue this same thingAnyway no matter how you feel about FiM post-Faust I don't think there's any reason to believe Pinkie Pie made up her backstory. Like if she could make up ANY story about where she comes from why would she make up being Amish and growing up on a rock farm? Don't you think she would come up with something more exciting? Plus we literally see the flashback of her getting her cutie mark in that episode the same way we see flashbacks of the other 5 getting theirs. So why would we assume her story is fake? Also you have to remember MLP is still a show meant to be watched by young children. If the writers intended for Pinkie Pie's cutie mark story in that episode to just be her making it up. They would have made it more obvious so kids could understand it
>>154705412>>154705604It really pisses me off because you can WATCH the episode where Spongebob and Sandy meet for the first time
>>154721704Been a fun ride
>>154722031Rest in piss Nobby and Narlene, nobody missed either of them.
>>154722004Not him and not that guy either. What did they say at the panel? Because if you don't remember what Pinkie Pie said then it's obvious the panel guys didn't either.>I don't think there's any reason to believe Pinkie Pie made up her backstory.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MF3Mj-55FFAWatch THE ENTIRE VIDEO TILL THE END and you'll understand why some people might have doubts about it after Pinkie Pie literally told them that she had another story about how she got her cutie mark.
>>154722004>Also you have to remember MLP is still a show meant to be watched by young children.I don't think people all these years later still know that.
>>154703349Dan Harmon confirmed that his backstory is real even back in the day. That's not a retcon. >>154720880No.
>>154703349If anything, I hated the season 2 retcon from Rick being just a guy with a portal gun that constantly pillaged other worlds for cool technology he can use, to being the smartest man god in existence that invents everything himself and can build anything he wants. I liked him better as the season 1 shitty thief that just stole all his gadgets from superior worlds and future advanced universes.
>>154723772Even if a woman wrote Pickle Rick, I'm glad at least SOMEBODY BTFO'd Rick.
>>154707566>>154708725For me it sucked after season 1, since the thing I liked the most about the show was the B-plots involving the family having to deal with whatever scifi shit rick brought into their lives. Those were a lot funnier to me than the S-Plots with Rock and Morty on some adventure. Season 2 and after, Jerry was fired, and a total loser that everyone treated like shit for some reason, everyone was just as jaded as Rick, and used to the scifi stuff, and they were just a part of the adventure too now. I missed them being the normal people doing normal shit that happened across a Meeseeks box.
>>154711448This was a weird time for DC in the early 90s>Get rid of every other Krypronian, fans hate that move>Get rid of every green lantern, fans REALLY hate that move>All the other speedsters sticking around is cool tho, they're fine being a mini population>Make Hawkman into the most confusing clusterfuck nonsense timeline shit ever, Fans just plain drop the character at that point>Break up the Teen Titans, make half of them evil, kill off the other half!
>>154723772Like the first episode where Rick needed something to heal Morty's broken legs so he goes to a super advanced Earth and steals some technology to do it. Season 3 and after Rick would just shoot him with a heal gun, or drop some screeching little alien on him that regrows legs and walks off.
>>154717349My problem with this is that they literally explained "you can't alter details of a memory"... which is excatly what Rick did. Meaning they just bullshitted a way out since Rick had no real play left.
>>154721704redditors aren't people
>>154703580>it le makes Rick less specialWhich is exactly why it works. For everything about Rick that he thinks makes him better than everybody else, he is still just some dude making his way through life.
>>154703405No. Do you want some shit? Do you want to see some REAL shit?
>>154725707Making him a shitty generic sad backstory character makes him better? How?
>>154725767It shows that he isn't as special as he pretends to be, that he is a hypocrite for hating on shit that is a key part of his identity.

>>154726802Wally killed someone by accident and pinned it on Harley and Booster until he eventually fessed up iirc. God awful arc but his redemption was decent at least. Basically it was one of the worst cases of character assassination as well as just a dumb premise for a story, the kind that can only exist after decades of long-running IPs being too far up their own asses.
Decided to get a refresher on R&M, and I genuinely forgot there was Jerry cucking all the way from the beginning.
Aw sweet, a dudeweed joke. Way to foreshadow the 9th season KEK.
JOHN FOUNTAIN WAS A STORYBOARD ARTIST ON THIS SHOW!? LMAO!
>>154726848It's in his character's DNA. I swear the people hating the show for constantly dunking on Jerry are self insertfags who see themselves as him even though he is not only pathetic but also a huge asshole early on and definitely deserved what he got.
>>154712147So?
>>154727072>It's in his character's DNA.LOL exactly, the running gag throughout the whole show was that he's pathetic.
