Why did it go wrong.
>>
Didn't this make the most in the trilogy?
>>
>>154703412
Tried to be too many things and couldn't decide which one it wanted to commit to
>>
>>154703412
Brett Ratner (mediocre director) half adapting a mediocre classic arc (The Dark Phoenix Saga) and mediocre modern one ("Gifted" from Astonishing X-Men).
>>154703857
It's the worst one.
>>
Everyone is so fucking dumb in this movie.
>Storm: "Nobody needs a cure. Rogue's being a bitch."
>Magneto: "Oh no my most loyal follower lost her powers due to these evil humans. But instead of parading her as the poster child of what this regime plans to do to all of us I think I'll repay her decades of loyalty by immediately stabbing her in the back."
>>
>>154703412
All Jean’s fault, as usual.
Wasted the death of Cyclops, Professor X, and the screentime of 2/3rds of the cast, all to feed Wolverine’s shitty boring waifu.
Well at least she’s hot unlike Nu-Jean when they literally did this a 2nd time.

>It's the worst one.
And it made the most in the trilogy.
>>
>>154703883
To be fair it was the studio that forced them to include the Gifted arc, not Ratner or the original screenwriters.
>>
>>154703940
>Rogue's being a bitch.
This never happened, and when Rogue does decide to take the cure, nobody judges her for it.

>I'll repay her decades of loyalty by immediately stabbing her in the back
Magneto is a huge backstabbing hypocrite. All three movies beat you over the head with that fact multiple times.
>>
I don't know I just remember something about it didn't feeeel right at the time

I think it was just the balancing act of too many characters
>>
Idk, it was a trend to do an epic trilogy like LOTR at the time, even if you rushed it.
The Matrix did it, Spiderman did it, Pirates of Carribean did it, so this seemed natural..
>>
>>154703412
They swapped their talented gay pedophile director for a journeyman straight pedophile director

It’s this. It has like 100 characters.
>>
>>154703940
This is the best characterization of Magneto, he's a backstabbing bitch like this.
>>
>>154707565
>100 characters
>only 2 original X-Men
grim
>>
>>154703940
Parading a powerless human as a tragic victim would make his army of Human-killing Mutants sympathise and pity the humans. He considers them a different species altogether, and he needs his people to do likewise.

The real plothole is why he made his brand new army walk single file into gunfire like it’s WW1 instead of dropping that Bridge he lifted directly on top of the building where the kid was.
>>
>>154708204
Yeah remember the note when Storm lost her powers in the comics, Forge and X-Men instantly went to a quest to find revert it.
Magneto didn't even think for a second if you could just revert it or something and specially because it was caused by Leech.

Trust me the executives at the studios just didn't think enough for the story and it was just so bad it killed the series there.

It failed because it is highly satanic it has mutants aka DEMONS

Magneto’s attack strategy at the end was comedically bad.
Send Juggernaut off to solo the Objective. The X-Men send Kitty down his tunnel to stop him. Will you send support to your most important player? NAAAHH. He’ll send a carrier pigeon if it works far away from your sight.
Don’t get Jean to do anything really. She’s just a bibbling schizo by that point. Have her stand around aurafarming so her teammates can obviously sway her moodswinging period by the end.
Let all your pawns scatter. They don’t need to stick together when spike face can get ignored by Angel and and speedy gonzales can get zapped by Black Lightning.
At this point you’re standing in the middle of a battlefield you waded yourself into. You’ve seen firsthand in Mystique that their syringes can and will oneshot you. The X-Men are trashing your disorganised mooks. No word back from Juggernaut.
The only Mutant protecting you right now is Pyro. He’s strong, and he’s a Zoner. Noone, Mutant or Human, can get near you while he’s at your back. He is the only one keeping you safe in the moshpit.
So of course you let Pyro waddle off to go have a schoolyard fight with the 1 mutant whose powers are his Kryptonite. Don’t even accompany him, just let him do his own thang.
Then you have so much whimsical fun bullying Wolverine again you forget this is the highest stakes battle of your life and the Big Furry Smurf leisurely strolls up behind you and shanks you with the AIDs serum.

For a guy always depicted playing Chess in these films he sure has zero awareness of Defence, Space or Priorities.

They lost the Singer because they kept stringing him along about renewing his contract and they also lost all the good writers from the first two movies - Hayter, Harris, and Dougherty - and kept the worst one, Penn.
Also too bad that Singer, Harris, and Dougherty ended up making a overtly-Donner-nostalgic dud with Superman Returns. We got the worst of everything.

The logic that a mutant that has had their powers stolen is just a human MEANS THAT MUTANTS AND HUMANS ARE THE SAME! It also means that every Mutant hit by power-erasing darts should immediately turn around and join the anti-mutant human faction like they just got auto-balanced in Team Fortress. It's pure retardation.

>>
>>154703857
nope, it cost a shitton more than the rest so it made next to nothing

that's why they started in with the "solo" movies - X-Men Origins, which was going to do Magneto and Gambit as well until XMO Wolverine fucking sucked

the adjusted production-only budget then (210 million) is something like 350 million now while the worldwide (459) was only something like 750 million equivalent

part of that high production cost was that they lost the director and one star midway through (to the awful Superman Returns, which just couldn't wait for some reason), but mostly it was because this was a second sequel with a returning ensemble cast, including Halley Berry, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen and Hugh Jackman who were more or less indispensable star power, and lots of expensive (and not very good) CGI and practical effects were used throughout, requiring lots of perfect takes, long editing etc

between that and needing to hire a new director (and shift all the shooting schedules around what everybody else was doing due to the delays - which is a lot of people to shift around) costs were way up even over the previous movie, over 50% higher, for a gross that was only marginally higher in real terms

add to that the public perception that it just wasn't a very good movie (because it's really quite bad and even chased internet memes for no reason) and there was no way they were going to continue the series as it stood

so instead they conceived of a cheaper non-ensemble format using only the popular stars, and some newer, cheaper actors like Gambit when he was young and not fat yet, and then that didn't work either so they rebooted into First Class, but people said "where's Wolverine" so they turned that into I don't know what the fuck that timeline's meant to be, the first one is the 1960s but the second is like the 1980s? what the fuck dude

>>154703412
because it insists upon itself, it has no other reason to exist but its own sense of entitlement, like all X-men

That argument only holds up if a sequel has a strong opening weekend then craters when bad reviews and bad word of mouth get out. Sometimes there's just a vast difference in opinion between reviewers and the general audience, sometimes there's a vast gulf in opinion between the hardcore nerd fandom for a thing and the normie moviegoing audience. The sad fact is normies just liked this movie enough to give it bigger box office than the previous two, though if >>154713448 is correct it had a much higher budget so it doesn't really matter.

IIRC Wolverine Origins' box office was really hurt by a version of the movie with unfinished effects leaking out online, even if people didn't see it themselves, spoilers and the general sentiment that it was bad were hard to avoid. The entire nerd population reeing about Deadpool, a character that normies had at the time very little exposure to, probably didn't harm the movie that much, despite how it remains the main thing Marvel fans complain about to this day.

First Class got good reviews but really underperformed compared with the direction of the box office of the previous 3 movies, so it's not surprising that they retreated back to putting the focus on Huge Jacked Man.

>>154713637
Dark Phoenix was the fourth movie with the new cast, and both reviewers and audiences had started to turn against these movies by the previous movie anyway.

Bryan Singer and his team went to do Superman because WB offered Singer complete creative freedom and a 200mil budget. He asked Fox to wait for them so they could do Supes and X3 back-to-back. They already had a treatment for X3 and could write a script. Tom Rothman, the then CEO of Fox already hated Singer, they had clashed on the productions of X1 and 2 numerous times, went berserk and demanded X3 to be in theaters BEFORE Superman no matter what. Matthew Vaughn was first hired to replace Singer, but backed down because he said the production time wasn't long enough for such a film and didn't believe he or anyone could deliver a good film in the time. Singer came back to X-Men after Rothman had left Fox.

The studio wanted to ignore Cyclops completely out of spite. The writers forced the issue and handled it with as much respect as they could with limited access to Marsden. It’s two very different storylines (The Cure and Dark Phoenix) not mixed well at all (while not at least try to use the cure on Jean?) while also having too many characters in a movie that’s only 1 hour and 30 minutes, so Wolverine is the only one that has any significant development.

this is absolute crap by the way

first of all these things are all agreed in written contracts ahead of time, so while your release dates may change you are aiming for a nominal release date and to go to a competitor, making a movie that is a direct competitor franchise, is never going to endear you to either of them, but to then demand that your original contract be postponed *for you to return to* so you can do the competitor job first is just the height of stupidity; it was only going to end one way

secondly having already committed to the job - instead of saying no, I've done two of these already and I want that change of franchise, so I'll walk away before production - Singer then sabotaged X3 by not only walking mid-production - when he knew they weren't going to suspend it and wait ffs - but convincing one of the stars to go with him, absolute moron behavior from both of them

you can't just stop making a movie mid-production; people move on, they all have other jobs to go to that they're tied to contractually, and for a director-producer to not recognize that is impossible; he just thought he was so big he would go off and do great and he'd be calling the shots

Singer thought he was Steven Spielberg, but he wasn't even Tony Scott
>>
>>154721383
Singer and Fox didn't have a deal signed yet. They were the ones stringing him along even though it had been over a year since X2 had been released.
>>
>>154714965
>First Class got good reviews but really underperformed compared with the direction of the box office of the previous 3 movies, so it's not surprising that they retreated back to putting the focus on Huge Jacked Man.
I keep seeing this sentiment, but Jackman's movies only did about as well as the early phase MCU solo title movies with characters that weren't as popular as him at the time. If they made a movie that wasn't shit and even halfway entertaining with another well-known X-Men character, they could have potentially pulled similar numbers to his movies, especially since Deadpool showed that he was an even bigger draw than Wolverine.
>>
>>154714965
The state the X-Men are shown in Doomsday is only possible if M-Day was the next major event after Dark Phoenix. Nina would become the Scarlet Witch, and the event would occur around the same time X-Men 1 occurs in the original timeline, this would explain the absence of Legion and Xavier failing to transfer his consciousness into a new body, meaning the one we see is a duplicate from another doomed reality

More half assed costumes, half assed characters, Juggernaut seemed like something out of a comedy movie. Majority of Magneto's crew were almost power rangers-tier in their look and how they acted. >20th Century Fox has terminated its two-year deal with Bryan Singer and his Bad Hat Harry production company -- in the middle of its first year -- in the wake of the director's signing last month with Warner Bros. Pictures to direct a new "Superman" feature. Singer, who has begun working out of "Superman's" production offices at Warners, has not signed an overall deal with Warners, though he is developing a "Logan's Run" remake for the studio as well. Fox has had discussions with Singer to direct "X-Men 3," a sequel to his two successful "X-Men" films, but it had never nailed down that deal, which wasn't part of his overall Fox pact.
He had a deal with them, but it didn't specifically include directing X-Men 3. They chose to be bastards about it, he wouldn't screw them over for no reason if they were giving him everything he wanted.

The timeline faggotry and incomprehensibly contradictory writing from there out was a fucking disaster. There's not a single post X3 film that isn't a schizophrenic shitstain because of it outside of, again, probably the Deadpool Movies and The Wolverine if you pretend the endscene of "Hey Logan instead of staying here and be happy get pulled back into our incomprehensible bullshit and thus basically invalidate the events of this entire movie as pointless." just didn't fucking happen.
